Words can be written down the way they sound using phonetic transcription, for example by using the International Phonetic Alphabet. This is helpful because in many languages, there is often a difference in the way a word is written, and how it is pronounced. In addition, different languages use different scripts. Someone who grew up with the Latin script might not be able to read the Arabic one.
