Quinton Byfield (born August 19, 2002) is a Canadian professional ice hockey forward. He currently plays for the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League (NHL) and serves as an alternate captain.
Career
[change | change source]Before playing in the NHL, Byfield played two seasons with the Sudbury Wolves of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). He had a successful time with the Wolves. He finished his rookie season scoring 29 goals and recording 32 assists for 51 points in 64 regular season games. He was awarded the Emms Family Award for being the OHL rookie of the year and was named the CHL Rookie of the Year.[1][2]
He was drafted 2nd overall by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2020 NHL entry draft. With his selection, Byfield became the highest-drafted black player in the NHL.[3] On October 16, 2020, Byfield signed a three-year entry-level contract to join the Kings.[4] He was sent down to play for their AHL-affiliate Ontario Reign.
On April 28, 2021, the Kings called him up and Byfield made his NHL debut in a 3–2 loss against the Anaheim Ducks.[5] On May 5, he recorded his first NHL point after assisting on a Jaret Anderson-Dolan goal in 4–2 win against the Arizona Coyotes.[6] On January 27, 2022, Byfield scored his first NHL goal against Semyon Varlamov in a 3–2 win against the New York Islanders.[7] On July 15, 2024, Byfield signed a five-year, $31.25 million contract to stay with the Kings.[8]
