Rahul Bajaj (10 June 1938 – 12 February 2022) was an Indian billionaire businessman and politician.[1] He was the chairman emeritus of the Indian conglomerate Bajaj Group. From 2006 until 2010, Bajaj was a member of the Rajya Sabha. Bajaj was born in Kolkata, India. Bajaj was awarded the third-highest civilian award Padma Bhushan in 2001.[2] His net worth was US$25 billion in July 2021.[3]

Early life and education

Bajaj was born on 10 June 1938 to Kamalnayan Bajaj and Savitri Bajaj. He was the grandson of Jamnalal Bajaj, an Indian independence activist and a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi.[4][5] He studied at Harvard Business School in the United States. He also attended St. Stephen's College, Government Law College, Mumbai, and Cathedral and John Connon School.[6]

Bajaj took over the Bajaj Group in 1965. Over a career of more than five decades, he led the growth of the group’s main company, Bajaj Auto. During his leadership, the company’s turnover increased from ₹7.5 crore to ₹12,000 crore.[7]

Awards and recognition

In 2001, Bajaj received the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honour.[8]

Bajaj died on 12 February 2022 at a hospital in Pune, India from pneumonia at the age of 83. He also had cancer and heart problems before his death.[9][10]
