Anatomical terminology

The renal hilum is a central area in the kidney where blood vessels, nerves, and the ureter pass through. Middle part of the kidney is curved inward with a deep groove called the hilum. From the hilum, the ureter and renal vein exit, and the renal artery enters the kidney. On the left, the hilum is at the level of L1 vertebra, and on the right, it's between L1 and L2. The bottom of the kidneys is usually at the level of L3.
