Rodina (Russian: Родина, which means "Motherland") is a Russian nationalist party. It was initiated in 2003. The party explains its thoughts as a combination of nationalism, patriotism and the government playing a significant role in the economy.

Nowadays, Rodina is viewed as a pro-Kremlin party, which implies that it virtually follows the decision of President Vladimir Putin.

History

The Beginning (2003–2004)

Dmitry Rogozin and Sergey Glazyev are the founders of the party. It shocked many people by getting some 9 percent of the votes in the 2003 elections. This provided them with 37 seats in the State Duma (parliament in Russia).

Other experts feel that the Russian government was strategic when initiating Rodina. They believe that it was aimed at stealing the votes of the Communist Party.

The Merger (2006)

In 2006, Rodina was not an independent party temporarily. It joined two other parties to create a new, larger group called A Just Russia. This was to aid the government in arranging political backing to fewer and bigger groups.

Coming Back (2012–Present)

Rodina was reintroduced in 2012 as a party on its own. Aleksey Zhuravlyov was brought in as the new leader.

After coming back, the party has not enjoyed the popularity as it did in 2003. Its win in the State Duma was one seat only in 2016 and 2021. In both occasions, the leader by the name Aleksey Zhuravlyov won that seat.

Beliefs and Ideas

Rodina is a right wing party. Its primary objectives entail:

• Powerful Army: Sustaining a highly powerful Russian army.
• Nationalism: First things first, the Russian people.
• Anti-Migration: The party frequently complains about migration of people to Russia by the foreign countries.
• Conservative Values: Helping the Russian Orthodox Church and the traditional family life.

Current Status (2024–2026)

• 2024 Presidential Election: Rodina did not have its candidate. Rather it formally backed Vladimir Putin who secured the election with more than 87 per cent of the votes.

• 2026 Russian legislative election: Rodina is a small but active party as of early 2026. It is gearing towards the State Duma elections in 2026. it will not win many seats but it is not banned to do so as it is regarded as one of the loyal opposition parties.
• The War in Ukraine: Rodina gives a firm position in favor of the Russian military operation in Ukraine. The leader of the party, Aleksey Zhuravlyov, tends to visit the front lines frequently, and has been known to deliver extremely strong nationalist rhetoric on Russian television.

Controversy

Rodina was prohibited to participate in certain local elections in 2005. This occurred after one of their campaign adverts was alleged to create racial hatred. The advertisement depicted the immigrants littering the streets and used the phrase "Let us clean our city of trash."
