Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington
The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington is a Catholic archdiocese in the United States. Washington, D.C. and five counties in the state of Maryland (Calvert, Charles, Montgomery, Prince George's and Saint Mary's) are in the archdiocese.[1] It was made in 1939 by Pope Pius XII.[2] Before that, the areas now in the Archdiocese of Washington were in the Archdiocese of Baltimore.[2] The Catholic University of America[3] and Georgetown University[4] are also in the archdiocese. 655,000 Catholics are part of the archdiocese.[1]
The archdiocese is led by a bishop, who is Cardinal Wilton Gregory.[1]
