Sapienza University of Rome (Italian: Sapienza – Università di Roma), also known simply as Sapienza[a]or the University of Rome, is a research university located in Rome, Italy. Officially known as the Università Studi di Roma "La Sapienza", it is one of the largest universities in Europe by enrollment[3] and one of the oldest in history, founded in 1303. The university is one of the most prestigious universities in Italy and over the world, often ranking first in national and Southern European rankings.[4] In 2018, it ranked the 1st of the world for classical and ancient history.[5]
Most of the historical Italian ruling class studied at Sapienza.[6] Sapienza university educated many notable alumni, including multiple Nobel laureates, Presidents of the European Parliament and European Commissioners, heads of state, religious figures, notable astronauts and scientists.[7] In September 2018, it was included in the top 100 of the QS World University Graduate Employability Rankings.[8]
