Saruman, also called Saruman the White, later Saruman of Many Colours, is a villain in J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. He is the leader of the Istari, who are wizards sent to Middle-earth to stop Sauron. He later betrays the Istari and takes Sauron's side. His backstory is in The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales. Saruman was played by Christopher Lee in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies.[1][2]
