Sean Baker (born February 26, 1971) is an American filmmaker. He is best known for directing independent movies about immigrants and sex workers.[1][2] He is best known for directing the 2024 movie Anora. For this movie, he won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.
Career
[change | change source]His is known for his movies Take Out (2004), Starlet (2012), Tangerine (2015), The Florida Project (2017), Red Rocket (2021), and Anora (2024).
For his work on Anora, Baker received many awards, including the Palme d'Or and the BAFTA Award for Best Casting, alongside his wife Samantha Quan. He is the first person to win four Academy Awards (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing) for the same movie.[3] He also tied the record with Walt Disney and Bong Joon-ho for most Academy Awards won in a single ceremony.[3]
Personal life
[change | change source]Baker was born in Summit, New Jersey.[4] He received his BFA degree in film studies from New York University through the Tisch School of the Arts.[5] He also studied editing at The New School.[6]
Baker is married to Samantha Quan, a producer on many of his movies.[7] Baker was an opiate addict in his 20s.[8]
