The second family of the United States is the family of the vice president of the United States, who is second highest executive officer of the federal government of the United States. Members of the second family consist of the vice president, the second lady or second gentleman of the United States, and any of their children.

In the United States, the term "second family" in casual reference to the vice president's immediate family, is most often used by the media.

Kamala Harris, the 49th and current vice president of the United States and her immediate family is the current second family of the United States since January 20, 2021.

Number One Observatory Circle is the official residence of the vice president of the United States and the second family.

The second family is designated to live in the Number One Observatory Circle as the vice president's family, as well as for the sake of their protection and safety.

Protection[change | change source]

The second family is immediately entitled to Secret Service protection as the family of the vice president. Individually, each member of the first family is designated a Secret Service codename by the United States Secret Service. Used by special agents, these code names uniquely identify members of the first family for their ongoing protection.
