Secondary forest

The forest in Stanley Park, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada is generally considered to have second and third growth characteristics. This photo shows regeneration, a tree growing out of the stump of another tree that was felled in 1962 by the remnants of Typhoon Freda.

When a forest grows again on a piece of land that used to be a forest, this forest is called a secondary forest. This is different from an old-growth forest. It is also different from a forest that is made by people planting trees. A secondary forest is the result of what is called natural succession.
