Shinji Ikari is a main character in the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion. He is a teenager, who pilots Evangelion Unit 01 to fight against monsters called Angels.

Profile[change | change source]

Shinji Ikari (碇シンジ) was born on June 6, 2001. His father, Gendo (ゲンドウ), works as the commander for NERV. His mother, Yui (ユイ), died when Shinji was a child. Shinji lives in "Tokyo-3", a city built after the original Tokyo was destroyed. He is a junior high school student. He also pilots NERV's giant robot Unit 01, in order to defeat the Angels that invade Tokyo-3. Shinji is good at playing the cello. His blood type is A.

Personality[change | change source]

Shinji does not talk much to other people and has low self-esteem. He is scared of piloting Unit 01, and has left NERV a few times. He always returns, because he wants his father to be proud of him. Shinji makes a few friends throughout the series. He courageously tries to help them when they have problems, even if he could get hurt.

Asuka Soryu[change | change source]

Asuka lives with Shinji and Misato. She argues with Shinji, because she is afraid he is a better pilot than her.

Gendo Ikari[change | change source]

Gendo becomes the commander of NERV. Shinji wants Gendo to be proud of him, but he does not spend time with him.

Rei Ayanami[change | change source]

Rei feels even more lonely than Shinji, but acts like she does not have feelings. She gets along with Shinji, but they do not talk very much. Shinji is curious about her.

Misato Katsuragi[change | change source]

Misato is Shinji's guardian who lives in her apartment.
