Sonam Kapoor Ahuja (pronounced [soːnəm kəˈpuːr əɦu:dʒaː]; born 9 June 1985) is an Indian actress, philanthropist and model. She was born in Bombay, Maharashtra.[1] Kapoor is one of the highest-paid actresses in Bollywood. Her father is actor Anil Kapoor. Her best known roles were as Sakina in Saawariya (2007) and as Simran in I Hate Luv Storys (2010).
Life
[change | change source]Kapoor was born in Mumbai, India.[2] Her father is actor and producer Anil Kapoor and her mother, Sunita Kapoor, is a former model and designer.[3] She has two younger siblings: film producer Rhea and actor Harsh Varrdhan. She went to school in Mumbai and later studied in Singapore. She also studied for a short time in London.[4]
Kapoor made her acting debut in Saawariya (2007). The movie was not successful.[5] She had her first commercial success with I Hate Luv Storys (2010).[6] In 2013, she received praise for her role in Raanjhanaa.[7] She also acted in successful films such as Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013),[8] Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015),[9] and Sanju (2018).[10]
Her role in Neerja (2016), a film about flight attendant Neerja Bhanot, won her a National Film Award Special Mention.[11]
After some less successful films, she took a break from acting.
Activism
[change | change source]Kapoor supports causes such as breast cancer awareness and LGBT rights.[12][13] She has worked with groups such as PETA and other charities.[14] She has helped raise money for children with cancer and other social causes.[15]
Personal life
[change | change source]Kapoor is married to businessman Anand Ahuja. They have one son.[16][17]
