Stolberg (officially Kupferstadt Stolberg (Rhld.)) is a town in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is part of the Aachen City Region and is located east of Aachen, near the borders of Belgium and the Netherlands.

Stolberg covers an area of 98.48 square kilometres (38.02 sq mi) square kilometres and had about 57.700 inhabitants in 2024. The town is divided into 17 districts, including Atsch, Breinig, Büsbach, Gressenich, Mausbach, Münsterbusch, Vicht, Werth and Zweifall.

The Vichtbach river flows through Stolberg. Large parts of the town are covered by forests and protected natural areas. Stolberg is also known for its historic copper yards (Kupferhöfe) and its unique metal-tolerant plants known as Galmeiveilchen.

History

The town is named after Stolberg Castle, which stands above the old town and is the city's best-known landmark. The town was first mentioned in documents in 1118. During the 16th and 17th centuries, Protestant metalworkers from Aachen settled in Stolberg and helped develop the brass industry.[2] Because of rich deposits of ore and its many metalworks, Stolberg became one of the most important centres of brass production in Europe. The town grew further during the Industrial Revolution, when factories, railways and new industries were built.

In 1972, several neighbouring communities were merged into Stolberg, greatly increasing its size. Since 2019, the mayor of Stolberg is Patrick Haas of the SPD.[3][4] In July 2021, parts of the town were badly damaged during the 2021 European floods.

Economy

Stolberg is often called the Copper City because it has a long history of metalworking and brass production. For many centuries, copper and brass industries were important for the town's economy. Major companies produce copper products, glass, chemicals and household goods. The town is also an important employment centre in the Aachen region.
