Sunil Grover (born on 3 August 1977) is an Indian actor and comedian who works in Hindi and Punjabi movies and TV shows. He became well-known for playing the character Gutthi in the TV show Comedy Nights with Kapil. He became even more popular for his roles as Dr. Mashoor Gulati, Rinku Devi, and Pidu in The Kapil Sharma Show.[1] He has also acted in movies like Gabbar Is Back, The Legend of Bhagat Singh, Bharat,[2] and Jawan.

Personal life

Grover was born on 3 August 1977 in Mandi Dabwali, a town in Sirsa district, Haryana.[3][4] He completed his Master’s Degree in Theatre from Panjab University in Chandigarh. He is married to Aarti and they have a son.[3][5][6] In February 2022, he had a heart attack and had to go through four bypass surgeries.[7][8]

Acting career

Sunil Grover was noticed during his college days by the famous comedian and satirist Jaspal Bhatti.[9] He also acted in India’s first silent comedy show Gutur Gu on SAB TV, appearing in the first 26 episodes.

In the 2000s, he started his TV career with the show Chala Lallan Hero Banne on the Filmy channel.[10]

Grover became very popular from the comedy show Comedy Nights with Kapil. He was well known for his funny characters like Gutthi, Rinku Bhabi, and Dr. Mashoor Gulati.[11][12] He also copied famous Bollywood actors like Amitabh Bachchan, which the audience really enjoyed. However, after a fight with his co-actor Kapil Sharma, Sunil left the show.[13][14]

Soon after leaving Kapil’s show, Sunil came back to TV with a show called Kanpur Wale Khuranas on Star Plus, where Aparshakti Khurana was the host. The show had a similar style to The Kapil Sharma Show, but it didn't last long and was taken off air.[15][16]

In 2016, Grover started acting in Punjabi films with Vaisakhi List. In the same year, he played the role of Shraddha Kapoor’s father in the movie Baaghi.

He returned to television in August 2020 with the show Gangs of Filmistan on Star Bharat, where he played a character named Bhindi Bhai.[17] The show ended in October 2020.

In 2021, Grover played the role of Gurpal Chauhan in the political drama web series Tandav, directed by Ali Abbas Zafar.[18]The show had a big cast including Saif Ali Khan, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Kumud Mishra, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Gauahar Khan, Amyra Dastur, Kritika Kamra, Sarah Jane Dias, Sandhya Mridul, Anup Soni, and Dino Morea.[19] In the same year, he also played the role of Sonu Singh in the thriller web series Sunflower. For this role, he lost about 8.1 kilograms of weight.[20][21]

After being apart for seven years, Grover and his long-time co-star Kapil Sharma reunited for The Great Indian Kapil Show, which started streaming on Netflix from 30 March 2024.[22] His imitation of Salman Khan in the show was praised by critics.
