I have removed the nice little story about Kirkpatrick MacMillan because it is very unlikely to be true. It's based on a Scottish newspaper report in about 1842 that an unnamed man had an accident involving a novel vehicle of some kind. But it is very unlikely that this was MacMillan, or that he was riding any kind of bicycle.

This page gives more information on what is known for certain: en:Kirkpatrick MacMillan

Perhaps some kind person with a better command of simple english can suggest another example? Or maybe we can re-use the MacMillan one, once there's a less controversial version of it in the English Wikipedia?
