Electric Potential vs Electric Potential Difference Voltage)[change source]

I understand this is the simple wiki and the definitions and explanations do need to be simple. But we should not and can not sacrifice correctness and accuracy for simplicity. This page is making some incorrect assertions and definitions.

There are two different things; Electric Potential and Electric Potential Difference. Electric Potential is measured in the unit volts. Electric Potential Difference is also measured in volts and is also called Voltage (in science Voltage is with an uppercase V and the unit volt is with a lowercase v). (An aside for the Voltage page is that Voltage is the thing and volt is the unit we measure it with. It is unfortunate they have such similar names which cause confusion among the general public.) Electric potential is not Voltage. We need, and there are, two pages, Electric potential and Voltage, somehow we need to distinguish between them and make sure that each page tells about its subject and does not confuse it with the other. Possibly we need to point out the difference on each page and point to the other page. We should also add a page of titled Electric Potential Difference and have that page point to the Voltage page.

The first paragraph -- "Difference in electric potential is also known as voltage" - Okay, but this page is not about voltage. "or electric potential energy difference." - No, this page is about Electric Potential not the difference between electric potentials at two different places. "The unit for electric potential is the volt, in memory of Alessandro Volta." - True. "Electric potential is like a push." - No, it is more like, but not exactly like, potential energy. "Electrons are pushed through a wire by the voltage." - True, but this page is not about Voltage.

I am going to try to clean this up and make a couple edits to the Voltage page putting the two pages in sync with each other. In the simple wiki is it acceptable to mention or say something about a different page and point to it?

I do not understand what the box about electromagnetism has to do with the page. The Voltage page does not have such a page. Why is it here? Should it be removed or one added to other pages? Can someone please explain. Bob.A51 (talk) 23:02, 23 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
