Disagreement[change source]

In my opinion, having this critical word as a disambiguation is a bad decision. There is a world of difference, and a huge literature on, the difference between teaching and instruction, just as there is between teaching and learning. Basically, we need a page on instruction that explains what is is, and by that I do not mean a dictionary entry.

On the one hand there are subjects taught which are real but hard to define precisely, such as literature and philosophy. On the other hand there is procedural knowledge that can be learned precisely, and measured exactly. Much of laboratory chemistry is procedural knowledge, and is instructed. Much of ancient history requires a subtle appreciation of ancient cultures, about which our knowledge is fleeting and incomplete. These subjects can be taught, but they need empathy rather than lists of facts.

We have the words "education" and "training" because there is such a difference in what is being learnt and what is being done. I think this page should be moved to "instruction (disambiguation)", so freeing up the word "instruction" for a substantial page. Macdonald-ross (talk) 07:34, 30 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
