There are two intestines: large and small. Why did you move it to singular? Archer7 22:42, 4 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

To be honest, at the time I didn't really analyze it beyond checking where EN had it. But looking into it further I think the main reason it's singular there is because not all animals with an intestine have the two different sections, i.e. there (presumably-animal anatomy is not something I claim to know a lot about) are things that can be said about the intestine that wouldn't necessarily be relevant to either the large intestine or small intestine. Most reference works and articles I looked at, even ones specifically about human intestines, discuss the intestine as a whole, and then the fact that it is divided into two sections, pretty much always with a disclaimer limiting it to certain animals, like EN's "in humans and mammals, consists of two segments, the small intestine and the large intestine."
