Hotspots vs island arcs[change source]

I have found that this article discusses two topics which are distinct. From what I've read, "island arc" properly means the series of volcanoes that form at a subduction zone, when an oceanic plate goes beneath another plate. It doesn't need a hotspot, it only needs a plate boundary. This applies to all the volcanoes of the Pacific Ring of Fire. On the other hand, the Hawaiian islands are nowhere near a plate boundary and only exist because of a hotspot. https://opengeology.org/textbook/2-plate-tectonics/ Lights and freedom (talk) 20:04, 16 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
