Talk:List of dog breeds

Anyone have an opinion on simple english version of this page?

I have moved over the complete list of dog breeds from the english wikipedia. My thought is that, if someone is not a native speaker of English, he might be familiar with dog breeds that are not common in the U.S. or England, and might not be as familiar with breeds that are common in those places. So it's hard to know which breeds to choose to list, if we were to reduce the list.

We already list breeds based on the most common names in english-speaking kennel clubs and english-language web sites, so even the foreign names seen here might in fact be the most common english-language reference to the breed.

It doesn't seem to make sense to limit it to American Kennel Club breeds or Kennel Club (UK) breeds. The FCI covers 80 member countries with its breed lists, and it has over 300 breeds, so even cutting back to that list would still leave most of these breeds.

Does anyone think it's a bad idea to list all the breeds? Or have thoughts on adjusting the list? I don't know whether I could find something like "the 50 most common breeds of dogs worldwide"; I don't know whether anyone knows--? Elf 03:43, 14 January 2006 (UTC)
