You are completely correct. I have slightly improved the intro by importing a few sentences from the ENWP version. Perhaps other editors will want to make further improvements, for example putting some history into the intro and moving the math into a section. One or two articles?[change source]

Is it better to combine apparent and absolute magnitude into the same article, or have different articles for each? If it's covering both, perhaps the intro should be modified to talk about both. Something like "The magnitude of a celestial object is a number that measures its brightness." rather than opening with a definition of just apparent magnitude.
