  • Don't get hung up on the spelling. The word is pronounced like eedeema, so neither the English nor the American spelling quite does the job. What's more, many people without formal medical training will know it as dropsy, which is quite a memorable term. If you keep in mind that oedema or edema means dropsy, that should do the trick.
