Age of puberty starting[change source]

Ref http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puberty

The states "girls typically begin the process of puberty at age 10 or 11; boys at age 12 or 13"

http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puberty

States "On average, girls start puberty between the ages of 7 and 15 years, and boys start between 9 and 16 years."

As 'typically' is essentially the same as 'average', why the major discrepancy ?

I think that a check needs to be done for accuracy, and then one or both of the statements adjusted.

Either one of the authors is trying to say something different and the phrasing needs changing, or there is an obvious error in dates.

YMMV. 72.187.41.237 (talk) 14:26, 9 September 2011‎ (UTC)

Someone had changed the entry to reflect the above,[1] and I tdied it.[2][3] 199.229.232.42 (talk) 02:13, 1 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Just a note, that we cannot use another Wikipedia as a reference, each claim needs to be cited to a Reliable Source --Thegooduser Let's Talk! :) 🍁 01:10, 15 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How does, "Usually, girls begin puberty at age 10-11"(which I tweaked to 10 based on a source I added) fit in with the statement that their changes take place at 8-15?--FDR (talk) 19:14, 18 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Too long?[change source]

This page suddenly jumped from 2,000 bytes to 47,000 bytes and has never recovered. It is really too long and too complicated. I have trimmed it a bit, but it still has too much that is tangential. Of course, the subject is everlastingly fascinating to young people, so it has a big readership... Macdonald-ross (talk) 18:22, 9 February 2013 (UTC) I'm going to trim off topic stuff out of it. --FDR (talk) 19:25, 15 February 2015 (UTC) I've got it below 40,000 bytes. So its slightly improved. Future edits should concentrate on reducing content, not adding content, except for sourcing unsourced statements.--FDR (talk) 13:32, 17 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Various[change source]

I can give a few comments.

Under "When puberty starts and ends", it's not the exercise which does it, it's the way they're trained to keep their weight down, special low-fat diets etc. Look at: younger ballerinas, female gymnasts, females in pairs ice skating, female long-distance runners... and you will see a common pattern.

Under "chemicals", what was said about 9-year old mums in Mexico was that they ate chicken (etc) which had been accelerated (fattened up) by growth hormones which were still active after cooking and eating the birds or meat. Alternately, the girls may just be heavier than before, eating fatty junk. Anyway, I think saying "environment" is too vague. The question is whether you can find a reliable source which says anything more specific. Unfortunately, this is not a field in which I can help with sources.

If one asks the general question as to why puberty in girls has lowered so much in 150 years (in Britain) the answer has to be the richer diet, and more specifically the increase in sheer calories.

You have done a great job, I think. Macdonald-ross (talk) 14:20, 17 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

How many bytes should this article be?--FDR (talk) 15:47, 17 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion: {{convert}}[change source]

We can replace the measurements (i.e. 20 in.) and put them inside the convert template so they’ll be the same throughout the article. Dylan | ✉   23:36, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
