Hmm... I just popped here by happenstance. In simple english I would think initially that a wave is something you do with your hand or possibly a wind-caused movement of surface water, not an energy xfer mechanism which is a bit complex...

I agree. This page needs work. It also is not necessarily true that particles in the medium are not displaced after passage of the wave. For example, if I have a cork that I throw in the ocean, it will not stay exactly in one spot, bobbing up and down. Also, although there are transverse and longitudinal waves, there are many other kinds. I guess the article is both too complicated, and too simple at the same time.--Filll 20:42, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
