Purpose[change source]

Generates a citation and link for a word defined in the online edition of the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language.

Usage[change source]

As with all reference notes, the template should be inserted after any punctuation, such as a period or comma. Also note that "AHDict", which redirects to the template Cite American Heritage Dictionary, may be used in its place for efficiency.

There is only one parameter:

{{ AHDict | word }}

  • word: Word that has been defined and thus needs a citation; a required parameter.

No support for page number is included as it is inappropriate for an online citation.

  • Triumphantly she said, "Go fish!"<ref>{{ AHDict | fish }}</ref>

This produces:

Triumphantly she said, "Go fish!"[1]

and the following in the references list:

"fish". The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (5th ed.). Boston: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.


  • The class was studying geodesy, which is the part of geology that studies the size and shape of the earth.<ref>{{ AHDict | geodesy }}</ref>

This produces:

The class was studying geodesy, which is the area in geology that studies the size and shape of the earth.[1]

and the following citation in the references list:

"geodesy". The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (5th ed.). Boston: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
