Template:Long ton/doc

From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This template is intended to allow entry of imperial weights (Avoirdupois), measured in tons, hundredweights, quarters and/or pounds (ton, cwt, qr and/or lb) and provide a conversion into pounds and into tonnes (metric tons) or kilograms (if the first parameter is blank or zero).

This format is traditional for the specification of locomotive and bells cast manufactured or used in the UK and some other Commonwealth countries. See Dove's Bellringers' Guide.

  • {{long ton |tons |cwt |qr |lb }}
  • {{long ton |35 |4 |2 |1 }}
35 long tons 4 cwt 2 qr 1 lb (78,905 lb or 35.791 t)
To link the "long" unit to article Long ton use |lk=on:
  • {{long ton |tons |cwt |qr |lb |lk=on }}
  • {{long ton |35 |4 |2 |1 |lk=on }}
35 long tons 4 cwt 2 qr 1 lb (78,905 lb or 35.791 t)

Only the second parameter, the number of cwt, is required; all the others are optional. Note that the first parameter must be empty then.

  • {{long ton | |cwt }}
  • {{long ton | |100 }}
100 long cwt (11,200 lb or 5,100 kg)
  • {{long ton | |100 |lk=on }}
100 long cwt (11,200 lb or 5,100 kg)
Unit names or symbols

There is no option to write full names of the units. The units are written: long ton[s], [long] cwt, qr, lb. (Where {{convert}} has |abbr=off/on).

Rounding

[change source]

Rounding depends on input.

  • If pounds are specified in input, the output value for pounds will be given to the nearest pound and the metric conversion will be to the nearest kilogram.
  • If pounds are not specified in input but quarters are, the output value for pounds will be given to the nearest 10 pounds and the metric conversion will be to the nearest 10 kilograms.
  • If neither pounds nor quarters are specified in input, the output value for pounds will be given to the nearest 100 pounds and the metric conversion will be to the nearest 100 kilograms.

Display

[change source]

Inside grammatical brackets, use disp=or or disp=sqbr:

A replacement ring of ten bells (tenor {{long ton||18|1|2|disp=or}})

gives: "A replacement ring of ten bells (tenor 18 long cwt 1 qr 2 lb; 2,046 lb or 928 kg)"

A replacement ring of ten bells (tenor {{long ton||18|1|2|disp=sqbr}})

gives: "A replacement ring of ten bells (tenor 18 long cwt 1 qr 2 lb [2,046 lb or 928 kg])"

In tables

References and footnotes

[change source]

Use ref= to add a reference or footnote.

{{long ton|3|18|1|2|ref=<ref>some source</ref>}}

gives: "3 long tons 18 cwt 1 qr 2 lb[1] (8,766 lb or 3.976 t)"

Examples

For example:

  • Locomotive weight: {{long ton|35|4}}.
gives: "Locomotive weight: 35 long tons 4 cwt (78,800 lb or 35.8 t)."
  • Locomotive weight: {{long ton|35|4|2}}.
gives: "Locomotive weight: 35 long tons 4 cwt 2 qr (78,900 lb or 35.79 t)."
  • Locomotive weight: {{long ton|35|4|2|lk=on}}.
gives: "Locomotive weight: 35 long tons 4 cwt 2 qr (78,900 lb or 35.79 t)."
  • Locomotive weight: {{long ton|35|4|2|lk=cwt}}.
gives: "Locomotive weight: 35 long tons 4 cwt 2 qr (78,900 lb or 35.79 t)."
  • Locomotive weight: {{long ton|35|4|2|lk=on}}.
gives: "Locomotive weight: 35 long tons 4 cwt 2 qr (78,900 lb or 35.79 t)."
  • The old tenor weighed {{long ton||21|2|12}}.
gives: "The old tenor weighed 21 long cwt 2 qr 12 lb (2,420 lb or 1,098 kg)."
  • The recast tenor now weighs {{long ton|0|20|3|7|lk=on}}.
gives: "The recast tenor now weighs 20 long cwt 3 qr 7 lb (2,331 lb or 1,057 kg)."
