From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

My Talk Page

Thanks for the review

Thank you for the review you gave me. I believe that I have learned a good portion of what I needed to know in the past few weeks (ever since I started editing the English Wikipedia again). Believe it or not, but I believe that my getting an admin coach over on the English Wikipedia has actually helped to improve my knowledge of certain policies so that I understand them better than I have before. As to the fact that I need to improve my article writing ability, I can tell you this: Not one article that I have created in the past (near past, and far past) did I feel like I was wasting time creating it. We are here to create and build an encyclopedia. I see the Simple English Wikipedia as one that doesn't have a lot of articles, and therefore, I write stubs about topics that I am interested in. As to the fact that you think that I make mechanical edits: yes, I do think that some of my recent edits have been mechanical (general article help and cleanup, copyediting, and the stubs that I have been creating), but believe it or not, but every single one of the articles that I have created in the past few weeks is inherently notable. Rivers in themselves, I believe, are inherently notable.

I would love to write more information about the river stubs that I have been creating, but the truth is, there just isn't anymore information to write. That is how it is with some articles. You just can't add any more to them because you feel like you've written all that you can.

As for expanding articles, I usually reserve the expansion of an article for times when an IP address creates a really short stub about an article that I know has more information about them. A good example of this was the Bunker article. I expanded this article into a 5 or 6 kilobyte article after I saw that an IP address created only a single sentence for that article. Any other time, I believe, an article does not need it. Also, I am not very good at expanding an article that is already written. I am better at copyediting and making sure that page adheres to policy than I am at writing or expanding an article.

Sorry for the long message, Razorflame 23:13, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

Don't be sorry, it was a pleasure reading it.
Personally, I think that one should choose quality over quantity. Ten 10,000 byte articles contribute more to a Wikipedia than a thousand 1,000 byte articles. Take Jimi Hendrix, for example. It was my first article here and was 20,000 bytes+. Since then it's been simplified and cleaned up but still passes the 15,000 byte line.
However, stubs are also important in the creation of a Wikipedia, I just think that one needs to find a happy medium in between stubs and long articles rather than leaning towards either side. --Gwib -(talk)- 23:23, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
ps. Keep in mind that you can't become an admin whilst adopted. 'Graduate' before your RfA!
If you are talking about over on the English Wikipedia, I actually shouldn't need to be adopted anymore. I will talk to him about this and ask him if I have graduated yet. I don't believe that I lean towards any one side, it's just that, over the past few weeks, there haven't been as many IP addresses creating bad, short articles that I need to expand, so, in light of that, cheers, Razorflame 23:33, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
Keep in mind that one doesn't need to expand IP articles. One can also create articles. --Gwib -(talk)- 23:49, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
To tell you the truth, I just don't have to focus to create long articles. I have ADHD, which prevents me from focusing on any one thing for long periods of time. I am able to push through this barrier, though, when something important to either me or the community needs to be done. Please let me know if there are any articles that I could expand for you on my talk page. Cheers, Razorflame 01:48, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
I have a friend who has ADHD. We throw paper balls at him in tests and watch him freak out. --Gwib -(talk)- 14:28, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
!!!! Lol! Anyways, today, I am feeling like I can create long articles or expand already existing articles, so that is what I will do. It's just that some days, I feel like I can't write or expand articles, and that is why I make the short stubs. Cheers, Razorflame 17:24, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

(unindenting) Don't force yourself to do anything, SEWP isn't worth killing yourself over. --Gwib -(talk)- 17:43, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

I'm not forcing myself into it, I just am feeling like I can create longer article today. Its just that sometimes, I feel like I am able to make longer articles, while other times, I feel like I can't. Today is one of those days that I feel like I can. Cheers, Razorflame 18:04, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

Can I get your help here? These three articles are a little too hard for me to write, so could you write them for me please?

BRILLIANT COINCIDENCE. I'm actually studying the European Question (which concerns the above directly) for my history exam!! Our teacher gave us a quick test on it a few weeks before the exam and I got 86%, so I know my stuff :D. --Gwib -(talk)- 09:38, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

Protecting archives

Alright, I am getting a little bit annoyed now. I have had to request unprotection of 2 seperate archives for two seperate reasons already (one to finish archiving, the other to open it for anyone to edit). Please don't protect the archives until after they have reached a good size (like 80 kbs, for example). And, since there is hardly any autoconfirmed vandalism here, I don't think that it is necessary to fully protect them. A semi-protection would be better in this situation. Please don't fully protect archives anymore. Thanks, Razorflame 02:57, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

  1. Safety first
  2. Since you requested to open a subject from an archive to edit, this brought more attention to it from users, thereby giving it more possible feedback from others
--Gwib -(talk)- 05:21, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
I only requested it because I needed to finish archiving the rest of this month's VIP reports. I wouldn't have asked if you hadn't fully protected it! Razorflame 15:02, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
"the other [reason was] to open it for anyone to edit". Since it was requested and unprotected, this basically acted as a signpost saying "COME EDIT HERE". Better publicity for it, basically.
There's no need for exclamation marks, asking someone to unprotect something isn't a sign of weakness or inefficiency. --Gwib -(talk)- 16:23, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Maybe they should only be protected once the archive is full? Microchip 16:36, Monday, June 2 2008 Utc
'Full' fluctuates. I've seen archives (mostly in Simple Talk) which are 100kb+ and others that are less than 30kb. --Gwib -(talk)- 18:19, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
My idea of "full" is when you get the banner saying "Your archive is too full, dammit! People with older browsers may not be able to easily edit the page". Microchip 18:40, Monday, June 2 2008 Utc

Please add block notice

Please add the block notice to User talk:81.137.227.205 as I checked that before reporting him to WP:VIP. You may revert his earlier blanking of his previous warnings at the same time if you want. I would do it myself, but don't know if it's appropriate for a non-admin to add a block notice in this situation. TransUtopian (talk) 20:53, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

You added the notice to ViP before I'd blocked him, so I didn't know he was already on there. Consider the notice up and running. --Gwib -(talk)- 21:03, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

I want to know, what do you think about Charles Spurgeon? I have done so much on it since it became a GA (see Here), so I want to know what you think needs to be done before I (or somebody) nom's it for VGA. Thanks --  AmericanEagle  01:59, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

I think you need to lengthen it a bit. I look for 13,000 bytes+ in VG articles and don't count lists or tables as text. It's so very close (I vandalized it and got around 12,450 bytes after removing the list [1]), you just need another small paragraph of information such as where he got inspiration or what interested him in his spare time. --Gwib -(talk)- 15:57, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Announcements

I was looking through the announcements, and I found that I made the 23,000th, 26,000th, and 29,000th articles...like I've been adding every 3,000th article. Funny, eh? Razorflame 21:37, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

Reminds me of this article I read the other day ([2]). It's called the "Bald-Hairy Theory" and basically is a HUGE coincidence.
"This rule has never been broken for close to 130 years, ever since the balding Alexander III took over from hairy father in 1881.
"Nicolas II, who succeeded Alexander III, was hairy, Vladimir Lenin was bald, Joseph Stalin was hairy, Nikita Khrushchev was bald, Leonid Brezhnev was hairy. Balding Yuri Andropov was succeeded by hairy Nikolai Chernenko, who left his seat to bald Mikhail Gorbachev etc etc... " --Gwib -(talk)- 21:48, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

Bot flag for SoxBot

I blocked it because of the big scary message on it's EN user page saying that the server admins were annoyed about it. "Do not run a clone of one of these bots without explicit permission from the server admins!" - although it was talking about EN due to it's high volume of edits, I didn't particularly want to keep it going without further verification. I left a message for Soxred93 (it's owner) informing him that I'd blocked it and that if he could tell me it was OK with the server admins, I'd unblock it. He didn't give me any response and just archived the message, so it doesn't look optimistic. I don't feel comfortable allowing something that's been specifically forbidden by Brion Vibber without further clarification. Archer7 - talk 18:48, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Tools?

Hi, Gwib. I am pretty new to the Simple, but an old time editor (3+ years) at the English Wikipedia. I was wondering if there are tools like Twinkle that I might be able to install here? I feel like I'd like to do some new/recent page patrolling and vandal fighting in addition to creating articles and improving the level of simplistic English on others. Sincerely, Bstone (talk) 18:38, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

Always good to see a veteran, I'm no expert in tools here (I tend to go old-fashioned and use a mouse and my eyes), but I know that AWB is available here.
Talk to user:Microchip08, user:Huji or user:Creol for more info, they're the 'tool experts' here. --Gwib -(talk)- 19:18, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

The category and IW's have been added, but as for Kachchi vs. Kutchi language, I'm not so sure. Fr Wiki and Br Wiki both have it under Kachchi (or variants of). --Gwib -(talk)- 11:23, 14 June 2008 (UTC)

Response.

I'll thank you to read my edit summaries and not assume that I'm vandalizing this Wiki. A games list for Pokémon SHOULD be a separate list, and a list of items is guide content. The act of vandalism is to alter an article with the intention of damaging it, and to assume that I'm vandalizing this Wiki is assuming bad faith. - A Link to the Past (talk) 15:32, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

Excuse me for thinking that blanking an article was vandalizing it. If you think a list would be more appropriate, then don't you think you (or anyone else) should make the list rather than you simply deleting what doesn't please you? --Gwib -(talk)- 15:36, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
  1. Actually, probably not. I prefer not to excuse people for poor behavior, especially to new members. I provided an edit summary explaining my actions. There was no vandalism at all in these articles.
  2. Perhaps I was, and that was the folly of you assuming bad faith in my actions? Hell man, I've got 20,000+ edits on Wikipedia, and the list of Pokémon games was built up entirely by me.
  3. The list of items is, however, completely absurd, and I explained my reasoning for "blanking" the article. It has no properties that would suggest encyclopedic worth, but rather, a strategy guide. - A Link to the Past (talk) 15:41, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
If you are w:user:A Link to the Past on En Wiki, then you've got into numerous conflicts already over this. Don't bring your petty arguments over here. Mass deletion is vandalism, edit summaries don't make rules go away. --Gwib -(talk)- 15:55, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
Yes, legitimate conflicts. Not an admin deciding that someone removing content, with a reason attached, is vandalism. I guess if I ever remove a list of quotes from an article, I'm vandalizing it JUST because it's mass removal of content. "Vandalism is adding, removing or changing content from Wikipedia to try and make it bad or incorrect." Your assessment of what vandalism is wrong on its face. The only thing it ever says is "to try and make it bad or incorrect". There's absolutely no reason to assume that my mass deletion is for that purpose. If I'm vandalizing, it means I made an attempt to make the articles bad or incorrect, and you have to establish that I had any of that intent whatsoever. If my edits weren't for that purpose, I was not vandalizing. Simple as that. I know that you are simply trying to protect content, and I respect that - I'm not going after you now for accusing me of vandalism, but because you continue to do so even when there is no reason to assume it. - A Link to the Past (talk) 16:09, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
Look, you removed the entirety of an article without consensus or even an offhand comment to someone. There is even a RfA open (here) discussing it, if you'd cared to look, and it was considered notable.
Read why people say it's notable, and not why they simply blanked it. Then I'll accept your apology, unless you're too stubborn or proud to give one. --Gwib -(talk)- 16:16, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
I made an edit which I considered to be the best course of action. My apology lies in me not reverting back and leaving it alone, is your apology insisting on me being a vandal whose edits, according to policy, "are trying to make the Wiki bad and incorrect"? I find it ironic that you ask for an apology for "being bold", and implying that I may be too stubborn, and yet you accuse me of vandalism in light of the fact that according to Simple Wiki policy, I was not vandalizing anything. - A Link to the Past (talk) 16:23, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
And what? That discussion is about a completely different list that I supported. How is it relevant at all? The species of Pokémon are far more notable than a list of items, and the list of games should be its own article. - A Link to the Past (talk) 16:24, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
Please don't screw my edits
I have been banned under over 9000 accounts so it won't do much anyway

Ready?

I know that I've turned it into a cliché around here, but do you think that Charles Spurgeon is ready? I just read over the whole article several times, finishing copyediting, removed all double links, added many references and very much information. And I don't think that it split into two columns, even with the "2" in it. Much better picture, by the way. You actually don't look like a goofball with your "significant other." Thanks -- America alk 05:30, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

See, I actually preferred this one as it was a great picture of her and him looking goofier just mean we as less likely to have to deal with Benniguy getting jealous of her and spamming all the time hitting on him. -- Creol(talk) 06:59, 16 June 2008 (UTC)
(and IuR spamming even more because he is jealous of Benniguy wanting you more than him...)-- Creol(talk) 07:01, 16 June 2008 (UTC)
But doesn't he just look so handsome with the white shirt, watch, big smile with his white teeth showing, and to top it off, it looks like they're in front of the Ocean! Better than a black-and-white photo with his tongue sticking out. Check out what I did, because it was so beautiful, to girlfriend. I'm so mean... America alk 17:07, 16 June 2008 (UTC)
To Creol: I'd change it back, God knows I could do without Benniguy's 'admiration'! But my significant other won't let me change it because she thinks her chin looks funny in the other one. I don't know what she's on about but "hell hath no fury...".
To AE: When I've got time, I'll read over Charles Spurgeon and make the necessary edits. Should be some time this week, latest this weekend. Then you can move it to the voting process and others will fix all the tiny little meticulous bits we missed to push it up past the bar, and as always, more information wouldn't go unwelcome! --Gwib -(talk)- 18:21, 16 June 2008 (UTC)
I've added so much information en:WP didn't have (and all the references also), but there is, I'm sure, more to be added... somewhere. Oh yes, I thought you might be mad that I put you in an article. lol. Will try. -- America alk 18:29, 16 June 2008 (UTC)
I know, but more information is always a good thing. Don't see the VG article criteria as deadlines. Rather see them as things to be achieved and then further developed on. And thanks for putting me in an article! It's rather flattering.
Note: It's not an ocean, it's a car park :P. --Gwib -(talk)- 19:41, 16 June 2008 (UTC)
Oh my goodness, it is a car park! Upon first look, that strip in the background looked like a sea bridge. About the picture in the article, if you weren't that you were looking away, it probably would be wrong. But because it looks partly normal, it is okay. Plus it needed there one anyway. I am working on it. You've challenged me. -- America alk 20:17, 16 June 2008 (UTC)
Expanded -- America alk 22:31, 16 June 2008 (UTC)
I will ask that you do your cleanup until I say - I have found so much more stuff and important facts here that if added, could double the article. But I'll be rational. I'm doing it my Sandbox. Thanks -- America alk 05:46, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

The article I deleted was simply a copy-paste from En, word for word. This newer one adheres more to the policy, but could have more information added to it without just copying from En Wiki. --Gwib -(talk)- 18:02, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

I could use someone to talk to maybe? What have you been doing lately? Cheers, Razorflame 08:57, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

You can talk to me! I now have PE (i.e. sport)... for two hours. Yay! Microchip 10:18, Wednesday, June 18 2008 Utc
Ooo, here's some interesting stuff to read. I got my exam results back! Did awful in french and maths but aced english, history, biology and chemistry.
Thing is, for maths, I got 44% which was one of the highest in the class. Most people got 40 - 50% and some got >20%. The test was so hard and we weren't allowed to use calculator, I had to do 720 in my head. --Gwib -(talk)- 15:18, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
Exam exams or mocks? 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 = !! Microchip 16:38, Wednesday, June 18 2008 Utc
Wow, kinda just like me when I took my math finals (I would get between 33 and 56%. Except this past year, when I got a 78% (oh yeah!). Oh well! Cheers, Razorflame 20:32, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
Only mocks, I'm aiming for 70%+ on the real things. Although I doubt I'll get it :P --Gwib -(talk)- 20:38, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

Edit summary usage

Hey Gwib. I was wondering if there was a place where you can find your edit summary usage (ESU). I know mine's 100%, but I just want to make sure. ;) -- Ryan†Cross (talk) 20:00, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

mathbot's tool Cassandra 20:17, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
Yup, 100%. :D Thanks. I already found another similar one. -- Ryan†Cross (talk) 20:22, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

Hey Gwib,

I have a question for you. I have given this a lot of thought, and would like to ask you something. I noticed you (among others) denied Razorflame in his RfA, without giving much (if any) reason (example: per "self nomination"). But yet you gave your full support to The Rambling Man. And I gave my support to him as well. But, what to you, all other nominations and arguments aside, makes The Rambling Man more qualified for adminship than Razorflame. Thanks -- America alk 06:01, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

I'm guessing that it's because TRM is an admin and bureaucrat on Wikipedia, whereas Razorflame is not. Like I said, an RfB has a glass ceiling of 90% approval, and there's a pretty high failure/withdrawal rate. Anyone who has that trust to beat those odds must be a great user. Note: I'm only speaking for myself, not for any one else. Cassandra 06:55, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
Actually, the only reason I opposed Razorflame is because, as I put in my summary, he self nominated even though he was advised several times against doing so. Before you criticise me for "not giving much reason", consider the possibility that my full reason was already written down and accounted for. --Gwib -(talk)- 18:02, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
Shrug, that wasn't not my point. I just wanted to know what made Razor worse then TRM. I wasn't trying to talk about you. Sorry -- America alk 23:27, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
The reason why Gwib's oppose is very much a valid reason for opposing me is because of the fact that it was a very proven fact that I was indeed warned against not posting self-nominations in the future. Anyways, let's not mull over an old RfA anymore. Look to the future, not the past :) Cheers, Razorflame 00:20, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
Okay, that's good enough for me. Cheers -- America alk 21:31, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Wikifying

Hey there Gwib. I saw that pattern you were doing, you know "district --> [[district]]". I decided to help wikify those articles. I did a lot of the work for you. Just thought I'd let you know. -- RyanCross (talk) 23:21, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

I know, we dominated the Recent Changes. Thanks! --Gwib -(talk)- 23:46, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, we did, didn't we. :D Your welcome. -- RyanCross (talk) 23:49, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
Well, I finished with the rest. All the articles from A-Z have been wikified. Oh, by the way, I noticed that User:Toromi has been editing the article with the same name Toromi. I think the violates the Wikipedia:Username because the username is a real famous person in real life. Should anything be done or am I wrong? -- RyanCross (talk) 00:09, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
The username 'rules' state that you can't choose the name of a political, military or religious figure as your username. But Toromi looks like quite an esoteric person so it doesn't quite fit into that category. --Gwib -(talk)- 00:15, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
Ah. I forgot about that. Thanks, RyanCross (talk) 00:22, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

My editing

I was wondering. Do you think I've been doing good so far in my 8 days here? -- RyanCross (talk) 10:36, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

I've already reviewed you on WP:ER. Not much has changed since then, you edit a lot in the mainspace and your articles seem good. Now all you need to do is get into a big conflict and sort it out for you to be totally acclimated here. --Gwib -(talk)- 11:50, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
I need to settle a dispute, or start one? I don't really see much conflicts going around. I really only see conflicts around WP:AN, but I'm not sure if I can comment there since I'm not an administrator. Can I though? -- RyanCross (talk) 11:53, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
Of course you can comment. But basically, one needs to experience something to really know how to deal with it. No amount of policy-reading or rule-book overviews will prepare you to actually face a sockpuppeteer or troll, they'll just give you a 'heads up'. --Gwib -(talk)- 11:56, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
Okay, I get it. I guess jumping in heated discussions can be good once in a while. It's not that hard to watch recent changes for something heated. ;) I'll watchlist a few more pages also. Thanks for the extra advice. -- RyanCross (talk) 12:10, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

Ken Lay

What does "BD" mean? Why did you remove all those categories when you did so? Cassandra 05:39, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

B means birth D means death, there used for the template {{BD}}, and the categories were removed cause they did not exist. Oysterguitarist 05:59, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Categories

While it is not appropriate to have so many red categories (or any at all), I believe that since Simple Wiki is simply a simple version of en.wiki, it will likely, if it ever grows to Wikipedia size, have most of the same categories, and keeping them here would make it more convenient to categorize. - A Link to the Past (talk) 05:42, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

When we get to the size of En Wiki, then appropriate categories can be created. But until then, one article with a dozen non-existent categories each more tiny than the last should be avoided. --Gwib -(talk)- 15:22, 24 June 2008 (UTC)
