Twentieth Century onward[change | change source]

The 20th century was a very important time in history. New technology and different ideas led to many worldwide changes in the time of just 100 years. <http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norse_mythology> Accessed May 7, 2008 <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norse_mythology> Accessed May 7, 2008 <http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0197623.html> Accessed May 7, 2008

• Myths were passed down generation to generation through poetry. • The Eddas – collection of Norse myths written by 9th to 13th century Icelandic Christians. Though they are the main source of knowledge pertaining to Norse mythology, they are not accurate because Christians in that time hated Pagan religions. They changed the stories to make the Pagan gods sound stupid and barbaric. • Yggdrasil = world tree, where all places in Norse mythology are located. • Earth/Midgard = flat disc in the branches of Yggdrasil. In Norse mythology, Earth is known as “Midgard”. • Asgard = disc at the very center of Yggdrasil. The gods of Norse mythology lived in Asgard. Asgard could only be reached by crossing the Bifrost bridge • Muspell = hot place where the fire giants dwelled. • Niflheim = cold and dark realm of the ice giants. • Æsir = Main gods of Norse mythology (Odin, Loki, Frigg, Thor, Baldur, Heimdall, Iounn, Sif, Ull, and Vidarr). They were mortals who stayed young by eating the golden apples of Iounn. • Jötunheim = realm of the giants, separated from Midgard by large mountains and forests. • Jotnar = a type of giant. • Ragnarok = “Fate of the gods”. This was thought to be a large battle at the end of the world. It would be fought between the gods of Æsir and Jotnar. • Hel = realm of the dead, where the goddess Hel rules. Hel is located under the roots of Yggdrasil. • Valhalla = realm of fallen soldiers, where Odin presides. Is a large hall. • The Vanir = Freyja (goddess of fertility, love, beauty, and war), Freyr (god of fertility), Njord (father of the Vanir and god of the sea). These are the only deities known to have lived among the Aesir. There may have been others. Elves may have also been Vanir. • Alfheim = Elf-home. Where the elves dwelled. • Niðavellir = Realm of dwarves. • Svartálfaheim = Place where the dwarves made Gleipnir, the binding that holds the wolf Fenrisulfr. • J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings was greatly influenced by Norse mythology. His trilogy included many figures from Norse myths, such as dwarves, elves, and giants. Tolkien’s use of these figures greatly popularized them. Today most modern fantasy stories include these creatures. • Hugin and Munin = two raven, thought and memory, associated with Odin. They bring Odin news of what is happening in the world.

World War I[change | change source]

World War I was a war fought from the years 1914 to 1918. During the time of the war, it was called "The Great War", or "The War to End All Wars". There were four main underlying causes of the war:

  • Imperialismimperialism is when one country takes control of another country's government. This created tension in countries under control of another country, as they wanted to be free. Serbia was one of these countries that wanted freedom. They were under the control of Austria-Hungary. On June 29, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand visited Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. While in Sarajevo, Ferdinand was assassinated by a Serbian man named Gavrilo Princip. Princip was part of a Serbia nationalist group called The Black Hand. This assassination led Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia. Very quickly, other countries took sides and most of Europe became involved.
  • Nationalismnationalism means being proud of one's country. This belief sparked interest in imperialism, to make one’s country stronger. However, nationalism in colonies caused rebellions, as the citizens of the colonies wished for their country to be free from the rule of another country. These rebellions caused many conflicts, such as the Balkan Crises.
  • Alliances – An alliance is when two countries agree to help each other in time of war. In Europe, the formed alliances meant that if one country was attacked, many countries would become involved, causing bigger conflict, greater number of fatalities, and longer war.
  • MilitarismMilitarism, or fascination in military, led to a build-up of the military in many European countries. Other countries felt threatened by the large armies, and they built up their own military and formed alliances. This caused an arms race.

The "spark" that started the war was the assassination of the heir to the throne in Austria-Hungary, Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Each country's allies then joined the war, creating a bigger conflict which turned into World War I. There were two alliances in Europe to begin the war; the Triple Entente (with France, Britain, and Russia), and the Triple Alliance (Germany, Italy, and Austria-Hungary). Then the Triple Alliance changed names to be the Central Powers. The Central Powers were made up of Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria. The Triple Entente changed name to be the Allies, which were made up of Britain, France, Russia, Italy, and the United States.

World War I was fought on two fronts; the Eastern Front and the Western Front. The Western Front was on the border of France and Germany, and the Eastern Front, which was the longer of the two, was on the border of Russia, Austria-Hungary, and Germany.

Trench warfare was a method of fighting used mainly on the Eastern Front. This type of warfare is when soldiers on both sides of a battlefield dig trenches. They use these trenches for protection against oncoming attacks. There were headquarters, bunks, front lines, artillery, and a machine gun bunk in a standard trench. Between the two opposing sides’ trenches was a “no man’s land” filled with dangers such as barbed wire fences and land mines, which would explode on contact. Soldiers would run through this land to get through the other side. It was common to drive tanks through this land.

This was used as a tactic in World War I for more protection against oncoming attacks. Attacks in World War I were much more dangerous than in previous wars and soldiers needed more protection – chemical poisons, tanks, aeroplanes, and bombs were used for the first time.

Britain put up a blockade, or barrier of ships, to keep Germany from importing or exporting goods. Because of this, Germany began using U-boats, or submarines, to sink British ships. One British ship that was sunk by the British, the Lusitania, had 1200 people aboard, 128 being American. After this, the Germans promised The U.S. that they would warn British ships before attacking. The U.S. remained neutral until the British intercepted a telegram sent to Mexico. This telegram was called the Zimmermann Note, and it said that if Mexico joined the war on Germany's side, and they won, Germany would give Mexico back all the land the United States had taken from it. After this, the U.S. declared war on Germany.

Soon after the United States joined the war, the tide turned and the Allies began to win the war. on November 11, 1918, Germany signed the Armistice, meaning "the laying down of arms" to end the war. After the war ended, the Treaty of Versailles was made, and Germany was made to sign it. They had to pay $33 million in reparations, or payment for war damages.

After the war, Germany fell into debt from the high reparations. High inflation and unemployment brought the country into a period of economic depression. The German people were desperate for a strong new leader to help them out of this depression. This need for a leader helped the rise of Adolf Hitler, who promised to bring Germany to greatness.

Family tree[change | change source]

Digestion starts when food enters your mouth. then your teeth break up the food so it can be digested easier. saliva coats the food and starts to break starch up into glucose. food then passes down the oesophagus by peristalsis. food enters the stomach. the muscels of the stomach churn the food into a paste, and add an acid and that starts to break down proeins into amniotic acids. the food then enters the small intestine. digestive juices from the pancreas and bile from the liver are added to the food. food is broken down into small molecules. small molecules then pass through the villi. fibre waste and water pass through the villi into the large intestine. water is absorbed and feaces are formed. feaces are stored in the rectum, then at last feaces are ejested from the anus.

Welcome to my userpage! I am a user on the english wikipedia, wikinews (although rather inactive), simple wikibooks, simple wiktionary...I won't name all of them. All my edits are in good faith. Sorry for any mistakes I make. Please tell me about them on my talk page. Please note that I am not the user from the en wikipedia of the same name. No, I am not permablocked on english wikipedia and [probably] never will. Except on conservapedia, but that was a mistake.

Changes[change | change source]

My changes will mostly be about ancient cultures, geography, middle ages, ancient cultures (did I mention that already...), mythology, basically anything that has to do with earth's history or geography. Sometimes I'll edit articles on books or songs. Sometimes I go on Wikipedia crazy spells and click on the "show any page" button and won't leave a page until I have contributed to it. The most edits I've ever done in one day is 192 on June 14, 2007. My most recent accomplishment is reducing the category:cleanup to one page. My current project is...improving the encyclopedia. :)
