BlipCanal[change | change source]

BlipCanal is an American digital cable and satellite television channel that is owned through a joint venture between Odyssey Communications (crown commercial broadcaster company with majority 60% interest) and Sony Pictures Animation (which owns the remaining 40%). It operates as a commercial free television channel targeting youth ranging from preschoolers to teenagers.

History[change | change source]

In September 2002, Corus Entertainment was granted the option to create a children's entertainment service gearing towards children of all ages. The brand first launched on September 15, 2002 at 7:00 a.m. on Odyssey affiliates and broadcasters in Canada and America. At the time, initial programming featured Adventures from the Book of Virtues, Pinwheel, and The Zapping Zone. Originally, the block ran from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. every weekend morning, until an afternoon block was added on October 3, 2006, running daily from 4:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. until it was cut on December 25, 2006, and replaced with a video on demand service and a mobile streaming app.

It was clear that Corus couldn't compete with operating one of its other channels (see Teletoon) and as BlipCanal showcasing its own programming through out the schedule; later reducing Corus' stake and handing it over to Odyssey Communications on January 8, 2007, with the introduction of a digital companion channel, featuring programming rolling out into hour long blocks.

Concurrent with the block's removal on June 30 and July 1, 2012, and with adding new content in its later years, BlipCanal was rebranded with a new imaging design on September 1, 2015, entitled Surprisingly Entertaining, featuring new promos, IDs, and continuity. That same date, Odyssey had gained rights to the programming libraries of Corus Entertainment, DHX Media, and Sony Pictures Animation, with new content produced in early 2016.

Programming[change | change source]

BlipCanal broadcasts educational and entertainment programs aimed at children aged 2 to 17 years in the form of live-action and animated programs, with the addition of archived content from the programming libraries of Corus Entertainment, DHX Media, and Sony Pictures Animation. The channel also features original content (such as drama, pre-school, entertainment, comedy, animation, news, and factual).
