The Hunger Games is a science fiction book by Suzanne Collins. It was published in 2008. It was made into a movie in 2012.
Plot Summary[change | change source]
The story takes place in a fictional country named Panem. It is controlled by the "Capitol", which controls the twelve poorer "District" states. The Districts tried to overthrow the Capitol. This plan did not work. As a punishment, the Capitol has a televised event every year where one girl and one boy are chosen from each district to fight to the death. This event is called the Hunger Games.
Katniss Everdeen is a 16-year-old girl. She is poor but has great hunting skills. Katniss is from the poorest District, District 12. Her father died in an explosion while mining coal. Her mother is sad over the death of her husband. Katniss also has a 12-year-old sister named Prim. Her family is very poor and does not have enough food to eat. Katniss must hunt in the forest to keep her family fed.
Prim is chosen to fight in the Hunger Games. Katniss does not want her sister to fight, so she offers to go instead. The boy chosen from District 12 is Peeta Mellark. Peeta once helped Katniss and her family by giving her bread. Peeta's family owns a bakery. They have more money than Katniss' family. Peeta loves Katniss, but she does not know it.
Katniss and Peeta go on a train to the Capitol. They meet Haymitch, who will help them.
