The Fourside Senators is a Micronesian professional soccer club based in the city of Fourside, Micronesia, which competes in Major League Soccer, the top professional soccer league in the United States, Canada, and Micronesia.

History[change | change source]

Formation[change | change source]

Gary Ben, the eventual founder of the team, was distraught when he saw a newspaper editorial complaining about the city of Fourside not having a notable sports franchise. At the time, the city only had the AA Fourside Athletics (now AAA as of 2008), and the city, despite having a dome to play baseball games in, did not have any other suitable stadium to situate games inside. (The stadium that was mentioned, the MetroDome, seated about 13,000 at the time, and could only fit a baseball game, not a soccer game) The NHL, NBA and the NFL were not going to expand to a new country anytime soon, and Ben thought that Fourside had a decent baseball team already, with the Fourside Athletics. When he found out that the MLS started to look for expansion for their 16th soccer team, Ben quickly applied, and gained the support of the Micronesian Government very quickly. Many fans were soon optimistic about a major league finally coming to Fourside, or Micronesia, as a whole.

Ben's proposal was to build a stadium at the Bloordale Grounds; which other than the New Year's Celebrations were not used much. It was in property of the White Tower, which later agreed that the stadium, if the team is accepted in Fourside, can be built, on the accounts that the stadium should have a walkway to the Tower, for tourism purposes. About a week later, Formula One track designer Hermann Tilke had his plans for the new stadium at a low cost, but his plan did not incorporate an entrance for the White Tower, and the city chose Michael Harrison's plan, which was originally conceived as bizarre, as the stadium was mainly built of Lego, but the city credited his creativity skills. The team, to the shock of the sports world in America, and in many ways Canada, when the team was accepted for expansion in late 2008. Work began in the new year, and by the the next new year, the stadium was complete, and the city held the new year's celebration for 2010 in the newly opened Varsity Stadium. Soon afterwards, the stadium was renamed the Virgin Stadium, when Virgin Group signed a 10-year agreement to sponsor the stadium.

2010[change | change source]

The season started out well, after defeating D.C. United in their second game. The city went estatic after beating reining champions Real Salt Lake, sending their record to 2-4-0. Another win against FC Dallas would send the team 3-4-0. However, a four game losing streak sent the Senators down in the standings, causing for some worrying, until the Senators tied twice and then beat Toronto FC, the record now 4-8-2, and in a decent position for a playoff spot. However, what probably killed the season, according to local fans, is their tumultuous 10-game losing streak, causing the dismissal of manager Piotr Nowak at the peak of the streak. Oddly enough, the replacement, Chris Cummins, was the manager of the Toronto FC in the 2008 and part of the 2009 season. After tying Chivas USA, the team lost four more times, the fans counting down the days until the season was finally over. The final game of the season was a tie against Columbus, which was considered one of the four highlights of the season (In order, the wins against D.C. United and Real Salt Lake, and Danny Mwanga's "afro" goal against San Jose in a 1-1 draw). The team finished with a 4-22-4 record, winning the MLS Wooden Spoon. This is how the Senators obtained the nickname "soup."

The team enjoyed in the coming of great international talent, namely Michael Orozco Fiscal, Roger Torres, Cristian Arrieta, Justin Mapp, J.T. Noone, Juan Diego Gonzalez and Sheanon Williams. During the season, the Senators let go of Shavar Thomas and Eduardo Coudet, for undisclosed reasons.

2011[change | change source]

The team, as of the SuperDraft, has not hired a manager. Although the owner has said that a manager has to simply sign the contract, lasting through the 2011 season, it has not been offically announced yet. Reports say that the manager will be announced sometime during January. The Senators traded their second and third round picks to Seattle and New England, respectively, only to get them back (albeit two draft picks lower) from Chivas USA and Portland. The team would have had the first-round draft pick had Vancouver and Portland were not going into the season as expansion teams. They wound up drafting Perry Kitchen, much to the dismay of the fans. Also, no goalkeepers had been drafted, and fans were dissappointed about that.

D.C. United and the Senators have agreed to hold a cup with each other in the season's series: the winner shall recieve the Queen's Cup. About one or two months before the season began, the Senators signed manager Juan Manuel Lillo to a 1-year contract and hired assistant coach Richie Williams to a 1-year deal as well.

The season opened up dissappointly, with the Sens losing to Houston 3-1, but eventually tied Vancouver to a scoreless draw a week later. After losing to the LA Galaxy and the NY Red Bulls, the Senators reached 20 games without a win, an MLS record. However, on April 16, the Senators beat the Seattle Sounders 5-1, bringing Le Toux's goal total to 3, Mwanga's goal total to 2, and also having one goal for Swartzendruber and Juan Diego Gonzalez.

Within the next four games, though, only one goal was scored by a Senator, that being of Juan Diego Gonzalez. On May 12th, it was announced that Ivan Becerra, Cristian Arrieta, and Zach Pfeffer were traded to Dallas in exchange for Edson Edward and Fabian Castillo. The trade was done after Becerra went off the gates on a horrible start, only recording one shot and three yellow cards to his name, and not having played in a game since April 9. The trade was speculated for quite some time, but it had not attracted suitors, so manager Lillo had compiled "some other players" to fill in Becerra's void. However, in the next game, against FC Dallas, Becerra scored the game winner to give Fourside a 2-1 loss. Lillo wasn't too pleased, so he gave rude gestures to Becerra. Not surprisingly, Becerra tried to fight back, but was restrained by his new teammates. Lillo was fined $30,000 USD for this.

The team won the 2011 Micronesian Championship, for the second straight year in a row, earning their place in the 2011-12 CONCACAF Champions League Preliminary Stage, when the Sens went 2-1 in the group stage and winning the semi-finals and the finals. The Sens then lost to Chicago, and then drew against Toronto FC, as well drawing against defending MLS champions Colorado.

The next game was against Real Salt Lake. Fourside went down to 10 men early when Swartzendruber was red-carded, despite being tackled himself. The Sens wound up losing 1-0. The Sens then beat Vancouver 2-1 after scoring to break the tie in stoppage time.

Shortly after the game, it was rumoured that Brad Knighton was to lose the starting goaltender to Micronesia's starting goaltender in the Gold Cup, Evan Newton. Also, it was reported that Danny Califf has lost captaincy of the team, and that Fourside will not have a permanent captain for the time being.

After beating D.C. United in the first leg of the Queen's Cup 3-1, the team had scored more goals than they allowed for the first time in their franchise history. It was also the first time the Sens had won three games in four games. Soon afterwards, the Sens lost two straight games, to San Jose and New England. Juan Manuel Lillo then sprouted interest in signing Free Agent Owen Hargreaves. The Senators decided to hold their first leg of the Champions League Preliminaries in the MLS season when they faced Seattle on the 23rd of July. They tied 1-1.

On August 2, 2011, the Senators signed Hargreaves to the end of the season. He nearly scored on his debut, but it was ruled offside. On August 4, the Sens tied with Seattle in the Preliminary round at home to win the aggregate on scoring the away goal in Seattle (scored by Danny Mwanga). This is the first time a Micronesian team will be represented at the CONCACAF Champions League. The team is in Group D with Mexico's Monterrey, Guatemala's Comunicaciones and Costa Rica's Herediano.

In Late August Michael Orozco Fiscal's loan ended and Fourside, nearing the cap, had to let Fiscal go back to his old club to San Luis in Mexico. The club named goaltender Evan Newton as their captain - they had no captain since June. Manuel Lillo, who called up Newton early in the season when Brad Knighton was underwhelming, and Newton has since led Micronesia to their first quarterfinal Gold Cup appearance since 2001.
