You caught me![change | change source]

... here I mean! Bravo! - Huji reply 14:12, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

It's a really good idea. I'm going to use it to make sure I don't miss adding {{Link FA|simple}} to any of the English counterparts. · Tygartl1·talk· 14:26, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

En WP copy-paste[change | change source]

I noticed that you have deleted Cranbourne railway line, Melbourne with this summary: en:wiki copy-paste. content was: ..... I would like to know if this is a general rule to speedy delete En WP copy-pastes, or something. - Huji reply 20:04, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

I'd have to do some research to find if/where it is specifically spelled out, but the short answer is yes, pages are eligible for quick deletion if they are direct copy-pastes with no (or very few) content changes. Depending on the specific situation, copy-pastes may be handled a few different ways, and different admins have different styles as to how they deal with them. If it is a very short article, sometimes I will take the time to remove any non-existant templates and simplify the wording. If a few articles are added by a user, I will often leave them a message asking them to not do this in the future and give them a few days to simplify. If nothing has been changed, I will use judgment to determine whether to QD or RfD.
If a brand-new user "bombs" (for lack of a better word) us with a large number of copy-pastes with no changes, I generally will delete them immediately. If they continue to add large amounts of copy-pasted articles after being asked not to do so, they can even be blocked for vandalism. With an established or semi-established user, such as Spiderpig in this case, I waited a few days to allow for simplification and deleted the pages that had no significant changes. Also, in this particular case, Spiderpig had already been told a few times that he should not be copy-pasting articles without simplifying, so I didn't feel that bad removing them without further warning (especially since he had 4 days to make changes). As a future admin, you will develop your own style I'm sure, and these are just a few examples to give you a idea of some of the ways that copy-pastes may be handled. · Tygrrr·talk· 20:36, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
Tygrrr, thanks for your informative comment. I'd be grateful if you could find if we have it specifically spelled out somwhere. Then we can discuss it more, for sure. - Huji reply 20:40, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
Well, this doesn't mean it doesn't exist somewhere that I'm not aware of, but I can't find a place where it is spelled out. However, as long as I've been here, it has been clear that copy-pastes are subject to quick deletion. If that was not added to WP:DP when it was decided, it would probably be a good idea to add it now so that no one can cry "That isn't policy". I would imagine that most people don't know it's not in the Deletion Policy since it's so common sense. (I didn't realize it was missing until I began searching for it). Perhaps we should discuss it on Simple Talk to make sure there is no opposal to "making it official" and adding it to the Deletion Policy page. · Tygrrr·talk· 21:08, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
Great idea. I will start the discussion on Simple Talk; please comment there as well. - Huji reply 07:23, 7 September 2007 (UTC)
In regards to the above, Harris Scarfe has been put up at undeletion requests. I did make significant changes (such as Bankrupcty to 2001, and changed a list to paragraph). I am not arguing, but these points need to be raised. Now if you'd excuse me , I have tost School Idol in 2hrs. -- Spiderpig0001 Does whatever a spiderpig does! 21:21, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

WP:LTA/KA[change | change source]

Why are you "Tygrrr" now? I have created a long-term-abuse page, WP:KA. I need help simplifying it. Since this is a very important case that all new users should know about (lest a newbie say "who is Kimberly Ashton and why should I care", and to prevent users from being stalked/deceived), I decided to create this. How would you evaluate this page, and how can you improve it?Ionas Rand 01:04, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District[change | change source]

Sorry, I thought I had re-fixed all your changes - there was an edit conflict, and I had made pretty major changes. Adam Cuerden 16:44, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

Paneuropäisches Picknick[change | change source]

Hello Tygrr, I see if i find the time to do a rough translation tonight. The article you mention describes an event that happened on the border between Austria an Hugary. A certain gate there, was opened (as a symbolical act) for 3 hours. Several citizens of East Germany (who had known this) used this event to flee the country. If we look at the title as it is, Paneuropäisches translates as "pan-European" (involving many countries across Euorpe), and I don't think I need to tell you what Picknick translates to. As I said, I?ll see if I find a little time tonight. --Eptalon 14:53, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

Hello, as promised, I translated the article. --Eptalon 17:31, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
There are probably a few spelling errors in there, I was also not sure on some parts of the translation. I am sure the article can be polished further now that it is translated. --Eptalon 17:43, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

Checkuser[change | change source]

Hello, Tygrrr. I saw here that you are amongst our most active editors. You wee in the top 5 most active admin editors each month of this year, so far. I have therefore taken the liberty to nominate you for CheckUsership. According to The checkuser access rules you must be 18 years of age (or adult, in your legislation), and you must provide proof of your identity/age to the foundation. Therefore, please put a respective note (of your acceptanve or refusal) on the RfA page. Thank you. --Eptalon 22:15, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

It would indeed be most amusing to see him "wee in the top 5 most active admin editors"! Sorry - couldn't resist. Jpbarrass 16:34, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

Withdrawal[change | change source]

Dear Tygrrr, I guess I understand why you withdrew from RfCU, and I'm pretty certain what you did (with good faith) is invaluable. Just wanted to express my feelings. Cheers, - Huji reply 08:18, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

I suppose I should say a little on the subject since some people may have questions about what was going on in my head when I accepted and then withdrew a mere 7 hours later. I admittedly do not know as much as some of the others who are running, but yet still felt I could undoubtedly perform the duties well. Also, since I spend so much time here I felt I'd be one of the most accessible CUs. However, I also don't feel we need 4 CUs and it was beginning to look that others felt the same way. Being that it seems I am the least-qualified of the 4 who were running when it came to knowledge of IPS, proxies, etc, I felt it was a good idea to step down. I agree with Eptalon that, if the goal is to have 2-3 CUs, we should have 4-5 users to choose from. However, to be fair, I think this should have been done from the start rather than after a delay. I did not desire the position enough to nominate myself from the start, but I was flattered by Eptalon's nomination and after thinking about it, decided that I could do a good job and accepted. But after accepting, the more I thought about it, the more I realized that we don't need 4 and that I didn't really stand a chance and I didn't feel like having person after person vote oppose to me for a week (even though I understand why they would). So rather than put myself through a week-long "beating" (so to speak), I decided to withdraw my acceptance. I'm happy that Eptalon thought I was worth nominating and I'm happy to have had support from other users as well. I also know that whoever succeeds in becoming a CU will do their job well. If at some time in the future we need another CheckUser, I would certainly consider running again, but the time is just not right for me. · Tygrrr·talk· 13:55, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Normal Distribution[change | change source]

Yes, go ahead; I trust you will do good things. --Eptalon 17:34, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I agree to start from the beginning. I try to spend part of my spare time on it as well. I have acces to good sources. - Huji reply 19:52, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
Okay. Anyone can feel free to start it over. I probably won't get a chance to do anything with it until Sunday, so if someone wants to start before then, go right ahead. · Tygrrr·talk· 19:55, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
I'm no good at it, frankly. I have tried three times to do this same thing, but every time, I ended up with something between confusion and vertigo! There are many "terms" which should be used and yet should be avoided as they are not "Simple" English.... Perhaps someone else should start it, and I'd follow his/her wording. - Huji reply 20:03, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
I have created Probability distribution and Exponential distribution; perhaps we can build on that.

The recipe for these (to get simple articles seems to be the following):

  • Leave out all mathematics, perhaps mention whether they are discrete, or continuous, and that they depend on one or two parameters. Maths is easy to add later on.
  • Focus on what they are used for. Try to find easy-to-understand examples (eg. the green-eyed people in the binomial distribution)

In that sense, I have flushed about 85% of Normal distribution; left html comments in the article. --Eptalon 21:12, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

For some reason, when that happens to me lately it doesn't tell me there's been an edit conflict. It just lets me save. It did it the other day with Browne34 on the RfA page [1]. I had started to formulate my reply before Browne34 made his edit, but it just let me save without notifying me of a conflict. Kinda strange... Anyways, I will go ahead and rollback my comment on this IP page since we had different warnings and you were the one who reverted his/her edits. · Tygrrr·talk· 16:53, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

German categories[change | change source]

Many in Category:Cities in Germany are already in Category:''Land xxx''. Do they really need to be in both category and a subcategory? --`Barliner´******`talk´ 11:04, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Do you mean like how, for example, Bonn is in the categories Category:Cities in Germany and Category:Cities in North Rhine-Westphalia even though Category:Cities in North Rhine-Westphalia is a subcategory of Cities in Germany? Yes, that does seem unnecessary to me. They should probably all just be in the most specific category, which in this case is Category:Cities in North Rhine-Westphalia. · Tygrrr·talk· 13:56, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Shazza109[change | change source]

This is a sockpuppet I own. I created it as I were giving her a password (for a legitimate reason) and we were telling everyone we were talking about WP. If its a policy breach, block it. I'll tag it a S/Pt of me. -- Spiderpig0001 Does whatever a spiderpig does! 19:44, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

Having sockpuppets is allowed as long as they are not used in an abusive way, such as making multiple votes, vandalism, etc. It's okay to have a sockpuppet, but please don't use it to vandalize again like you did on Horse. If you do, you and your sockpuppet may be blocked. Thanks. · Tygrrr·talk· 19:50, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
Is it O.K if "Shazza" has its own U/Page, so the people at school do not get suspicious that we were not talking about WP? -- Spiderpig0001 Does whatever a spiderpig does! 19:52, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
As long as you are not making abusive edits and voting more than once, there's no reason you can't have 2 accounts (although I don't understand why you'd want 2...). I also don't understand why you're worrying about people being "suspicious". Anyone who reads this conversation will know it's a sockpuppet and you also have the notice on the Shazza page that you're the same person.· Tygrrr·talk· 20:21, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

Categories[change | change source]

Hello Tygrrr, I am surprised you have deleted two categories from my Lulu (opera) page. Whilst the page at present would be the only one in the category, in both cases there would be more to follow. I plan to write one on Wozzeck (another opera by Berg), and probably the violin concerto. When writing articles on musical compositions I have been putting them in Category: Compositions by So-and-So. It seems very messy to do anything else with them just on the basis that a category might only have one article. Some of the categories on Main Wikipedia, I would agree, border on the over-fussy (the "left-handed, bald-headed composers" type thing), but "Compositions finished by others" can include famous works such as Schubert's Unfinished Symphony, Mussorgsky's Sorochinsky Fair, and several other well-known works. It seemed to me a worthwhile catalogue. Do we really need more than one article before a catalogue can be created? Hikitsurisan 23:08, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

RfA[change | change source]

I figured it was too soon for me to put myself up for adminship, but since it's my first, I would really like to wait and see what other people say about me and maybe some mistakes that I make so that I can correct them in the future. I hope I didn't trouble you for saying this, and I know you were only trying to give me advice :). -Razorflame 04:18, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

As I mentioned briefly on the RfA page, you are allowed to do whatever you like with your nomination. I will, however, say that it is a borderline violation of WP:SNOW. This community takes RfA's quite seriously. It is not really a place to get advice from other users about your editing. It should be for serious requests only. I am only trying to help you by pointing out that, in the past, premature nominations have been looked upon negatively by many users here. · Tygrrr·talk· 04:27, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

Also, what does it mean if one of your edits is marked as a 'patrolled edit'? -Razorflame 04:19, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

A "patrolled edit" is when another user has looked over the article and determined that it is an appropriate addition to the project. In other words, the page is not vandalism, not merely a dictionary definition, not a copyright violation, is notable, etc. · Tygrrr·talk· 04:27, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
So it's a good thing to get an edit or an article that you've created patrolled? -Razorflame 04:41, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
Yep, you got it. It's like a seal of approval. · Tygrrr·talk· 04:44, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for thinking that I might make a good admin in the future. I have been working very hard to help this site as much as I can, mainly because the main English Wikipedia was way too active for me. (I still managed to make 1,200 edits there). -Razorflame 04:43, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

If you get bored[change | change source]

I found a group that is need of subcat'ing, but am a wee bit to unfocused to get to it so I thought I would mention it to you in case you were looking for a new cat-based target. Category:Islands has a large number of carribean islands which could be grouped together. Actually there may be several Island groups in that cat that could get cleanned up. I plan on getting to it eventually, but if you happen to be bored and looking for a new section to tackle, this may keep you busy for a few moments. -- Creol(talk) 07:59, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

Other websites[change | change source]

I have always been capitalizing the W in websites. Should I go back through all the pages that both me and Lights went through yesterday, changing them to Other websites, and make them all lower case? Is that the norm here? -Razorflame (contributions) Talk 16:53, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

Yes, just like with page titles, unless headings are proper nouns, only the first letter of the first word should be capitalized. This also goes for categories. I was meaning to talk to you about the categories you created. ‎Category:Square Numbers should be Category:Square numbers, ‎Category:Pokémon Items should be ‎Category:Pokémon items, and Category:Prime Numbers should be Category:Prime numbers. Part of the reason I have not fixed them yet is due to the issue Creol brought up about the number pages. It would be a waste of time to go through and change it if the pages (and thus the categories) will be deleted in the end. The other reason I have not fixed them is I'm not sure about the need for Cat:Square numbers and Cat:Pokémon items. I have not looked into the situation fully yet, but I feel that perhaps we should just have a List of Pokémon items page, rather than a page for each item. And English Wikipedia does not have a cat for square numbers and I think I may agree with that decision. · Tygrrr·talk· 17:08, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
Yes, I agree with you about making a list of pokemon items instead of making an item for each page. I will go through the pages that I made about Pokemon items and suggest that they be merged into list of Pokemon items. The category should probably be deleted as well. -Razorflame (contributions) Talk 17:11, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
I also think that instead of creating 493 different articles for all 493 Pokémon, we should just make a big list of all 493 Pokémon. Agreed? -Razorflame (contributions) Talk 17:38, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
I'd have to say that that would be a preferable option to creating a page for each one. However, I personally feel that lists of that sort are not the higest priority right now. We are still missing pages on important events and people in history as well as important topics in science, arts, geography, etc. While I understand that people want to edit what they're interested in, I would encourage anyone to focus on the so-called "core articles". · Tygrrr·talk· 17:47, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

I'm sorry if I sound rude, but I am very interested in Pokemon, and would rather edit pages about them. I don't know much about current events as I do not watch the news much. I would like to help in other areas, and I have, I just wanted to take a break and do some pages about the video game that I like the most. -Razorflame (contributions) Talk 17:50, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

You don't sound rude. Like, I said, I fully understand that. :-) Please, edit and create pages that make you the most comfortable and happy. As long as guidelines and style are followed, I don't think it hurts anything. Every once in a while, I think it helps to take a step back and think about the kind of encyclopedia we want to create and try to make sure we are being useful to the target audience. Pages related to pop culture only hinder this goal if no other types of articles are being created. I think that right now, our little encyclopedia has a pretty good balance. :-) · Tygrrr·talk· 17:57, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
And I think that I make up for my Pokemon articles with all of my Switzerland articles that I have created. Don't you? -Razorflame (contributions) Talk 19:50, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

RfD Stubs[change | change source]

What about Template:Sci-stub and many other old stubs which now redirect to Template:stub, can they be deleted as a policy decided by RfD or will they each need listing in an RfD? -- Barliner  talk  22:38, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

That's a good question that I don't know the answer to. I guess I don't see much problem having them as a redirect. Honestly, I didn't know about them or I may have considered redirecting the Microsoft stubs to the generic stub template because it would have saved me some work. :-) At any rate, I'm certainly not the ultimate authority on the situation so I would suggest perhaps posing the question to the community on Simple Talk. · Tygrrr... 22:43, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Nationality categories[change | change source]

Wodanaz has made many changes to these categories, moving them to tribal groupings. As I said in my message to him, I don't think this will work. I would revert but first wanted to check with you and Creol as our "category experts". I am right in thinking we cannot mix the "nationality" and "tribal" groups. -- Barliner  talk  11:19, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

We should be able to solve the problem by expanding/re-organizing the Category:Ethnic groups. You are correct though--there is a distinct difference between an ethnic group and a nationality and they should not be mixed because where a person lives does not always determine their ethnicity. It's going to take quite a bit of work to clean these cats up. But what doesn't take a lot of work when it comes to categorization, right? :-) · Tygrrr... 14:52, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
