VGA archive

Hi! Would it not be better to collect the votes and discussions in one archive (this and this)? Regards, Barras (talk) 13:55, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Personally, I think that the discussions and !votes should both be archived at the same team, but it doesn't look like that happens. To be honest... i'm not fussed. Goblin 15:32, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I ask only, because you moved one from one to the other archive. I think the discussions and the votes of the same article should be in one archive. What do you think? The two votes in the ld archive? Regards, Barras (talk) 08:36, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I moved it as the dates on the archive were wrong. Feel free to move it back, but if you do then change the dates on the archive. Also, the page was very long, i'd rather make sure that people's browsers don't crash than having a vote and discussion seperate (which happens anyway on the proposals page, so there's really no difference). Regards, Goblin 10:22, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I moved it back, that the discussions and the votes are in one archive. And I changed the date. Regards, Barras (talk) 10:38, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Okie dokie, thanks a lot. Regards, Goblin 11:21, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

My RfA

question

I could be wrong, but I think the user that just registered, Jiggley puff (talk · contribs), has an inappropriate username?--   CM16  18:24, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think there is anything wrong with it - what are your concerns? It's just a Pokémon character... Goblin 18:25, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Copy vio with the name is my concern, but if you say it's okay, I'll take your word for it.--   CM16  18:36, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Nope, not a copyvio. Thanks for keeping an eye out though! Cheers, Goblin 18:38, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No problem.--   CM16  18:41, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps its an impersonation account? (see I do have a sense of humour!) Kennedy (talk) 18:43, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
HAHA my gut is splitting </sarcasm> seriously though, that was a tiny bit funny, made me smile.--   CM16  18:48, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

DYK stuff

Hey BG7, per your msg on ST, what do you think to the suggestions to keep DYK going? The Rambling Man (talk) 19:51, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, i'll drop my thoughts down shortly. To be honest, I don't think it's the requirements, I think it's a lack of editors. There are plenty of suitable articles out there. I still think that my GA idea is best (but then I would, it's mine ^_^) so i'll jot it down at ST shortly. That said though, I still think we should concentrate on things such as getting more (V)GAs etc (On that topic, would you mind helping me with my next one at some stage? Either Blackpool tramway or Victoria Line [probably the latter!]). Regards, Goblin 19:56, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Certainly. Drop me a line when the drama subsides a bit and we can get on with the Victoria Line. Best. The Rambling Man (talk) 08:03, 2 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, i'd rather get on with it soon-as really ;). I can cope with the drama (I had much, much worse at EN!) and I think a bit of article writing might be a welcome break ;). Still, if you were referring to my block I stand by it! ;). *Gets out book on the Victoria Line* Regards, Goblin 09:11, 2 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Great, then let's crack on. Let me know when/how I can help. The Rambling Man (talk) 09:16, 2 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Okie dokie! I shall ping you as & when I need help etc ;). Regards, Goblin 09:22, 2 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback

Thanks. Pmlinediter (talk) 10:22, 2 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. If you need any help, just drop me a line. Goblin 10:23, 2 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Just want to know, is this Wikipedia edited so less? I scanned the New Changes and saw that the last 10 odd edits were made by you and me and hardly any other editors were there. So, Simple has only about 10-12 active editors now? If this is true, the number of users here must be increased. Pmlinediter  Talk 10:38, 2 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'd say we have about 30 or so active editors, though they don't all edit every day and not all at the same time. Some days the wiki is really quiet, others not. One of our 'crats retired yesterday, the IRC channel was possibly the busiest it has ever been. We've lost a few editors this year due to various reasons, so we are a little thin on numbers at the moment. You'll get to know everyone within a week or so, but yes, we do need more editors, so if you know of anyone who is interested, tell them they are more than welcome! Goblin 10:47, 2 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've definitely noticed how laid back the editing is around here. Not quite dead, but when compared against enwiki... yeah, much slower. EVula // talk // 10:29, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

C'mon man, we had a deal...! Fix me up a good article! The Rambling Man (talk) 19:45, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oops! Sorry! Lemme just finish this list of redlinked templates for Stratford station, and then i'll at least start a stub ;). Goblin 19:46, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
About time too! The Rambling Man (talk) 19:49, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

My thoughts

Blue Goblin you're okay but like I would have expected you had some understanding and perhaps compassion but instead you seem a bit harsh no offence you're okay and you like transport so can't be all bad seeya

Question

Could you please explain why you archived my ER after it had been open for only 4 days? Thanks, Dylan620 Review me 02:00, 9 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You had been reviewed, so I archived. No need to be greedy, there's at least one user who has been there for months. Regards, Goblin 08:58, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Tagged a category you created for quick deletion

Just a heads up, I tagged Category:Society and social science templates for quick deletion. There was a pre-existing Category:Social science and society templates; I made the decision for which should be axed based solely on the fact that the other category was created first. Just a heads up. EVula // talk // 05:12, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your bot

Hi there. I've noticed that you've set up an anti-vandalism bot. Very nicely done :) What specific kinds of edits does it revert? I've noticed it reverting mainly full page blanking, but does it also revert changes that blank a particular section of an article? Does it have a function that will disable it from reverting an edit if a "white-listed" or otherwise trusted user deletes a section from an article? Just a few qualms that I would like quashed if you could, please :) Razorflame 16:35, 12 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Razor, thanks for the comments, nice to know the work is appreciated ;). It reverts obvious test edits and vandal edits, which are defined. Common vandal phrases such as "penis", "fuck" etc are reverted, as well as page blanks. Users with over 50 edits are ignored by the bot, and in addition there is also a blacklist. It also reports to my IRC channel, ##bluegoblin7, and it can also be administrated from there (i.e. adding to the blacklist etc). Hope that answers your questions, if you've got anymore, or suggestions for rules or features, just ping ;). Regards, Goblin 20:25, 12 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it is appreciated, although one could question its' application on a Wikipedia of this size. I am not too sure that we get enough vandalism for us to have our own bot yet, but then again, maybe we are....cheers, Razorflame 20:26, 12 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree. Better to have it than not. We, as a community, need to try more new ideas. Goblin 08:03, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Agree with Goblin - it may not be a big Wikipedia yet, but ... many of my vandalism reverts have been to vandalism that has been missed and has existed for 12+ (often 24/48+) hours. I'd say that means a bot is in order. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 12:10, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the words Philosopher. If you've got any suggestions for what it should revert please let me know - there are probably more bases that can be covered! Regards, Goblin 19:09, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bot false positive

The bot recently edited Black Hole. I reverted the edit. I wanted to let you know (you can check the diffs). Griffinofwales (talk) 00:34, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please see User_talk:GoblinBot4#Bad Revert for my response :). The bot will throw up false positives at times, it's not a human so can't detect what the content is, just match the rules it has got! Please do tell me about false positives so that the bot can be improved. Regards, Goblin 08:03, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
A good idea might be to create a page dedicated to tracking false positives, that way the rules can be tweaked further. Chenzw  Talk  14:00, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeh that sounds like a good idea. User:GoblinBot4/FP should do the trick. Not sure what would be the best way to go about it - user reports at talk page, then I add into a table at FP, or the user adds them straight to the FP? Hmm... Goblin 19:41, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

DYK hook

i kept adding my hook because other editors i spoke to said it was now okay. besides; it is not to hard to understand, it has 800+ characters (by far) and it has sources and references. Can it now be put on the "Next Update" or not? -'J. B. A. Evháh'- (talk) 09:40, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oops, I meant to write this! It will be moved by an uninvolved editor once it has been approved at Template talk:Did you know, which it is currently not. Please don't add your own hooks as it creates a Conflict of Interest. Thanks, Goblin 09:44, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am afraid it will not be added... I mean: the article Mars looks better. Maybe you could help me. I am not very good at writing articles, but Wijerd Jelckama is by far my best one yet! -'J. B. A. Evháh'- (talk) 09:47, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

All of the approved articles will be added to the queue at some stage - I will personally make sure of it. It doesn't matter if other articles are better, DYK is a good place to showcase lots of different types of articles. Please just be patient. :) Goblin 09:54, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I did not know that. I'll be patient than! -'J. B. A. Evháh'- (talk) 09:59, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No worries. Thanks for your interest in DYK. Goblin 19:44, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Bluegoblin, sorry I won't be able to speak to you tonight, I forgot I am off to watch a football match (season ticket, can't get out of it :)), it doesn't end till late. I'll speak to you tomorrow night? If not, another time. Sorry :) NotGiven 14:50, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ah no worries dude! Hope your team win! Not sure if I will or won't be on tomorrow, it's very much touch and go as i'm in GCSE period, and i've got an exam on Friday so it's unlikely. Anyhoo, I emailed you on your MSN address :). Thanks, Goblin 20:27, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please take a look at DYK. The last two noms have been waiting for several hours (one is mine). Simple seems very quite lately. Pmlinediter  Talk 12:55, 15 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, going a couple of hours without review is quite normal for our DYK area, nominations generally take a few days. Agreed simple has been quiet today, but no quieter than a normal midweek, midday. Goblin 13:17, 15 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You removed my hook from the DYK Next Update? Why, Philosopher said it would be on the next update and would feature on the main page, so... J. B. A. (talk) 18:23, 15 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

PS: Why is the picture innapropriate? You said that in your editing summary when you just removed it! J. B. A. (talk) 18:28, 15 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I said that if it was on the next update, it would show up on the main page. Which is true. I hadn't seen that you had placed it on the next update yourself. If it is your nomination, you need to let someone else place it at next update. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 18:30, 15 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yup, Philo about summed it up, also look at previous topics on this matter, and other pages. Goblin 18:34, 15 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Would you add it? J. B. A. (talk) 20:32, 15 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have added more sanity checks into the bot's source code (due to the unreliable network). Trusted users were reverted as the bot had trouble retrieving the edit count, which returned a NULL response and thus met the condition of not being over 40. :P Chenzw  Talk  02:28, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Looking at the DYK updates, it doesn't really answer my questions. After you removed J.B.A.'s addition (following the rule that those who suggest or review can't update), I have only one hook at DYK. Perhaps you could take a look at the other? Pmlinediter  Talk 15:40, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, glad yto be of service :) ;). Out of interest... who said that about more than one hook? Goblin 15:39, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It was J. B. A.. Pmlinediter  Talk 15:40, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, no, there's no limit on the number of hooks you can have on the Main Page at any one time. I'm sure at least one update has been almost all by one editor! We need as many hooks/help as we can get, thanks for your continued input! I can drop by to take a look at it later, though I shall probably edit it further first as I am SEWP's Railway Station Man ;). Regards, Goblin 15:45, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that would be me. I thought that wasn't allowed. Is it? J. B. A. (talk) 15:46, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I thought it was. We really are in need of hooks here and it would be best if an user contributed frequently to keep it going. Cheers, Pmlinediter  Talk 15:48, 19 May 2009 (UTC).[reply]

Theb I can do nothing but approve. I have already voted "yes", so it is only a question of time before the main page DYK section will be updated by some moderator. Well done, keep up the good work! J. B. A. (talk) 15:50, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hook is now at the Next Update page, should MP'd Saturday at the latest. Thanks for the continued input/interest, all help welcome! Goblin 16:26, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

your block

Users (and IPs) are allowed to blank their user talk pages. There are only two exceptions, block notices & unblock requests. Griffinofwales (talk) 18:34, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Blocked users should be warned with the right warning templates before administrators block them, but administrators can block a user at any time if they are abusing Wikipedia on purpose or going against other policies. The block is an administrative decision. --Barras (talk) 18:37, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
2 vandalism edits?! I gave him a final warning. If he had vandalized one more time, I would have reported him. But he did not vandalize again so he didn't deserve the block. My interpretation of Goblin's comments is that he blocked the user because of the TP blank. Griffinofwales (talk) 19:05, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It was a 48 hours block... just get over it, I blocked as I felt needed, and the block only has about 24 hours remaining. It's not the end of the world... Goblin 09:38, 20 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not doing this to resolve this block, I am bringing this up so you (we) don't block prematurely in the future. Griffinofwales (talk) 15:25, 20 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You've been told before that there is no warning amount required for a block. Its up to admin discression. -Djsasso (talk) 15:55, 20 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I know that. I don't disagree with that, but sometimes I think it is overused (my opinion). Sorry if I am annoying all the admins. Griffinofwales (talk) 16:11, 20 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
With all due respect, you don't have to question every single action made. Odds are the admins know what they're doing. –Juliancolton | Talk 16:12, 20 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OK, from now on I promise not to question admins here about their decisions concerning blocks of possible VOAs. That allows everybody to go back to productive work. Griffinofwales (talk) 16:17, 20 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

France

I don't see why you demote france. I reverted (getting some vandalism by an ip at the same time :) ) as there is a vote going on, which lets me think there is consensus to finish work and oppose demotion (here). Yotcmdr =talk to the commander= 18:53, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is the decision of a user who don't voted. There are still too many issues. Please undo your undemotion! Otherwise I will do it. We can repromote it if necessary. Barras (talk) 18:56, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Seems crazy to me, it's like promoting a user to admin with 25% support ! Yotcmdr =talk to the commander= 19:00, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
We don't promote articles to GA's with 90% supports and many concerns posted by one users, that aren't fixed. demoted again. Barras (talk) 19:05, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This is contradictory, because the uesr that has posted the concerns has given m some time to fix the article. Going through the GA process will take more time than necessary. This is stupid, I'm sorry to say. Yotcmdr =talk to the commander= 19:45, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Normal are 7 days. You got 15 days. That should be enough. We don't want half good articles we need good ones. You can go to WP:PGA if the concerns are fixed. Barras (talk) 19:49, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
And the history section is not complete like TRM said. WWI and WWII is completely missing. This is not a GA now. Barras (talk) 19:52, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, but I tried editing while I was ill and if you look at my contribs for the last 7 days, there's not much there. I have had very bad headaches and did not feel up to writing GAs. Yotcmdr =talk to the commander= 20:35, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
What Barras said. The !vote went on long much longer than usual, and there are lots of outstanding issues. Feel free to fix and re-list, but as it is now it's no good article. Goblin 09:16, 20 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Not signing posts

Hello. In case you didn't know, when you post messages on talkpages and Wikipedia pages , you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ("~~~~") at the end of your message. You may also click on the signature button which is above the edit window. This will put a signature containing your user name or IP address and the time you posted the message. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you. :P — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kennedy (talkcontribs)

I had to laugh at this [CENSORED]'s reply to his latest block notice... so, what "advantages" does he have or see to being repeatedly blocked? Any clues? Keep up your good work. Zephyrad (talk) 21:58, 21 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

.ac

I have seen that you have deleted page ".ac", and the following reason was "no content". There was one sentence with explanation of in which state is used .ac as a country code top level domain. That's evaluates as a stub (short article) (if we start to delete every single page with few sentences, we will have very bit of articles).--AleksA 12:05, 23 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

DYK cred

I was just going to post the DYK credit in the TP of the articles when you did it. Seriously, though, we have already got 3 approve hooks now. Can you please move them to next update? (I can't since I have either nominated or reviewed them). Pmlinediter  Talk 10:32, 23 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Already  Done - and we have four ;). If we can get one more, we could have a 3-day update :D. Goblin 10:36, 23 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I already have 3 noms now. Perhaps you could review one? Pmlinediter  Talk 10:40, 23 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I am personally aiming for a three day update structure by next month. Maybe later, if we can et enough editors, we can reduce it to updating everyday. Pmlinediter  Talk 10:40, 23 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have made a DYK page here, under my userspace. If you have any possible hooks which you don't want to nominate right now, you can put it there. Pmlinediter  Talk 10:43, 23 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. We just need more users to pitch in! I think your DYK page is overkill though, and I certainly won't be using it. Who gives a fuck (pardon the French) about how many hooks are waiting for the next update? The more the merrier, as I keep saying... Goblin 11:23, 23 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it was User:Mighty Wodan who suggested it saying that having a huge backlog at T:TDYK is overkill - Just the opposite of what you think. Pmlinediter  Talk 11:27, 23 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think there is ever any chance of a wiki this small having a "huge backlog" on anything. It is complete overkill. Goblin 11:29, 23 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Let's see. Perhaps I'll ask you to delete it someday.Pmlinediter  Talk 11:30, 23 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for participating in my RfA, which passed with 21 Support and 1 Oppose. I hope I will be able to fulfill your trust as an admin on Simple. Special thanks to RyanCross for nominating me! --Meetare Shappy Cunkelfratz!

DYK next updates

Hi! What happened to the approved hooks in the "to be moved into next update" section? Shouldn't they all remain there until the next update has been done and then moved? I can't find them? Also, I take it that we can keep adding newly approved hooks into that section (ie: have more than five) as the moving editor can then just use the bottom five. fr33kman talk 23:10, 24 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

PS: Do we require editors to be named to submit hooks? fr33kman talk 23:12, 24 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, moved them to Template:Did you know/Next next update, as apparently two updates worth is a "backlog" and we should "update the moment we get 5 hooks". I'm developing my luverley DYK bot some more, as well as a queue system, as per EN. Might make people shut up. (Yes, I am frustrated :P.) Goblin 23:16, 24 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That's cool! I didn't even know that "next next" page existed! :) Still, it seems DYK is up and running again. I'm making it a priority of mine. I understand your frustration! LOL fr33kman talk 23:25, 24 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hehe ;). Once we settle to a good update pattern then we will be fine. Some people just want to jump straight to daily or w/e, and experience has shown that that just won't happen straight away. 10 days is infinitely better till we are absoulutely sure - a couple of months at least imo.
P.S. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe we do. No idea is my honest answer! Goblin 23:16, 24 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Shall we take it to ST and see what folk think? fr33kman talk 23:25, 24 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
How about Wikipedia talk:Did you know? Did you know it's what it's there for? (Sorry, couldn't resist! And yes, that is how i'm feeling atm! A long day at CTV does that to you! (Didn't sit down between 0830 and 2030, except for about 30 minutes at lunch!). Anyway, retiring to bed now, there again tomorrow! Regards, Goblin 23:39, 24 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Good night mate! Yes I did know that's what it's for (cheeky), but I've found lot's of people never look at any other talk page but ST. I'll add it to that WT:DYK page then. Night (-.-) fr33kman talk 23:44, 24 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Goblinbot1...

Hello,

I think Goblinbot1 would run rather smoothly, if it were run - Shouldn't you request a slot on a toolserver - to have the bot run automagically? I just found today that it hadn't run, and we were left with an old totw. --Eptalon (talk) 10:53, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Eptalon,
I've had a toolserver request going since November for all four bots and a few other things, but as yet no avail. If you can hurry it along, please do. Regards, Goblin 10:57, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Victoria line

Hi, I've done a bit of work on it. I've made a bunch of templates and done a few red links. We're gonna need to work of citations also, as there are not enough at the moment. fr33kman talk 11:07, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It fits all the criteria of GA. Can voting now begin? There are no more major issues as far as I can see. Mighty Wodan (talk) 18:14, 28 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey,
It's up to you. I'm happy to move it to voting if you want, but I would reccomend it waits out the full two weeks to be absolutely certain that there are no isses.
Regards, Goblin 18:21, 28 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The full two weeks? Does that always happen? If so, I would be more then happy to wait. Do you see any more issues? You can bet some editors are going to complain about the length of the article, even though the article is long enough according to the criteria. I've seen that happen numerous times in other proposed GA's. Is that going to be an issue to some people? Mighty Wodan (talk) 18:24, 28 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's up to you. My VGA, CTV, was only there for a few hours, but we worked for weeks on it. I will have a look later and drop some comments. I'm sure some people will complain, but at the same time the whole wiki works like a bandwaggon so if one user supports and has no problem with length, depending on the user others will follow. Regards, Goblin 18:50, 28 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Let's say, I would let the voting begin. Do you think the article, as it is now, would pass. If so: I say let the voting begin! If not, let me know what should be done. Mighty Wodan (talk) 19:44, 28 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
