VG article[change source]

Thank you SO MUCH for all the recent support and edits you did for on Jimi Hendrix. I've added 3 more references and I've spread the word that it's a proposed VG article. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to do this, but I've encouraged people to vote on it, maybe you'd like to vote as well? It would look great on the Simple Wiki front page along with Japanese Tea Ceremonies and the like :)
Thanks again
Gwib-(talk)- 22:48, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for protecting the article, it wasn't an edit war as such. It was just that the anonymous IP address was adding things like: "Anal sex does not lead to pregnancy (unless semen spills out of the anus and drips to the female partner's vagina)." which although it correct information, is not really necessary in my view.
If I was wrong, I apologise, but personally, things like that, and also all the bestiality and "sex for power" subarticles were really out of place there.
Gwib-(talk)- 17:18, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think one good option in such situations is to direct the anonymous user to the talk page of the article and discuss the matter there, after the first or second revert. (I replied here, to keep the discussion concentrated in one place.) - Huji reply 20:35, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Farsi vs Persian[change source]

For good reasons, the name of the language is Persian, and not Farsi. Although people in Iran call it "Farsi", the English name for it is Persian. I've also undid this because I just created the required template. Best, - Huji reply 08:36, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good articles and assessment scale[change source]

Hey Eptalon. I was wondering if you would like to start listing articles at good articles since you've already started the very good article business. Also I'd like to begin an assessment scale on all simplewiki articles as possible (although the majority of the articles here lie within the stub and start areas). If you agree, I'm planning to start [[Wikipedia:Good articles]]. Thanx, --§ Snake311 (T + C) 05:12, 12 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Philip K. Dick[change source]

Philip K. Dick contains many categories and templates that are not used here. If a user copy-pastes an article directly from English, that is enough to be QD'ed and I would QD it. I hope you will take care of these issues. I wouldn't mention anything, but this has happened many times in the past and I think perhaps you should consider not copy-pasting articles without simplifying them in the future. Please take this as constructive criticism because that is how I mean it. I hesitate to criticize my fellow admins but I felt this should be addressed. Thoughts on VG articles[change source]

Dear Eptalon, just as I told you at Simple Talk, I've been having a few thoughts lately about VGA that I wished to share with you, and hear your thoughts. If you believe any of my ramblings to be worthy of deeper discussion by the community, please, feel free to suggest that we move on to another venue. As of now, however, I have not planned to make any "official statements" since basically, all I have are some doubts and ideas. Since you're our foremost expert in the area, that means, talking informally to you.

Just like you (and I think, like many of the regulars like Tygart, Snake, Isis, Huji and most of the newer editors like Gwib), we all wish our number of VG articles to increase as much as possible. And just like all of you have said at some point, we should be proposing, and promoting new ones at a bigger rate, without sacrificing in quality. Well, after some thought, I think there are four points on which I'd like to hear your input, two of them somewhat minor; and maybe, just maybe, come out with an idea worthy of being considered by the community. I'll try to be as concise as possible.

  1. I had not planned to comment on the citation templates, but you brought up the idea yourself today. I've expressed my opinion at the VGA Requirements talk page, and I won't repeat it here. And I agree with you: an otherwise good article like Tea ceremony looks flawed to me with its current references system.
  2. I really feel that placing the {{vgood}} template on top of the articles' themselves is intrusive to the readers' view. Instead of showcasing the article, it distracts. No other Wikipedia I've consulted has such a system. I'd like to suggest that we do the same thing as EnWP, DeWP, FrWP and others: placing the template at the talk page, and have a small template in the shape of a star or a medal to display at the upper right corner. Of course this doesn't apply to {{pvgood}}, because it invites to discussion, and is placed temporarily.
  3. Now the major points. This is very subjective, and I might very well be wrong; but I find our system to be a little confusing, and rigid. Not the guidelines, that I think are fine; but our system of listing candidates, waiting for input, and then moving them into the voting section. By doing this, we're effectively duplicating both the voting and the Peer Review stages; and this may also be the reason why our Peer Review page is largely abandoned. I believe that what usually happens, is that we find ourselves with this scenario: an article gets proposed, a few people get interested in reviewing it; and if objections arise, the article lingers in the list for weeks, and even months. Again, this system is unique: no other Wikipedia that I know of follows it. I personally believe a system closer to those used at many other Wikipedias is far more dynamic, and helps promote articles at higher rate without losing quality: namely, listing straight for voting. If an article doesn't comply with the guidelines, it'll get opposed, and the nominator will have the chance to solve the issues that are brought up before the time expires. Yet an article that is in compliance of the guidelines won't have to wait until others review it first, just be given permission to only then get voted.
  4. As I said, the guidelines look well to me, and a major reform is not necessary in my humble opinion. I do think, however, that #3 is effectively acting as an obstacle, rather than helping to improve the articles' contents. Or maybe it's us who are making a wrong interpretation of it. While I do agree that a few revisions are a sign that the article has been doublechecked, that is exactly what the Peer Review and voting stages are for: submitting the article for public scrutiny. Besides, not everyone has the necessary expertise to edit certain articles. I know nothing about Astronomy, or Tropical Storms; so in the recent candidates, I limited myself to read and vote accordingly. If someone has done a good work on an article, better than the one I could have done, then I don't feel it's necessary for me to edit his/her work. Now, I said, maybe it's because were misinterpreting it, because I see the guideline says "possibly by other editors", not "must be done by other editors". Yet the truth is, we're currently objecting because of this.

Again, these are just my thoughts, and please take them from someone who is a relative newcomer to this project, so there's a big, huge chance I may be wrong. But I've come to love this place and its people, and I'm very enthusiastic about its possibilities. I'm just concerned because of my interest of trying to help improving it with my humble efforts and suggestions. Love, Phaedriel - 19:52, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

First of all, I'd like to congratulate you, Phaedriel, on your well earned title of "Ms. Verbosity" :). But now onto more pressing subjects.
I think that your ideas are very useful! Especially those on the distracting banner, a more subtle star would be more appropriate. However, I don't think that an article should be passed straight onto the voting stage when considered by someone to be good enough to. But you are indeed correct in saying that some articles sit gathering cyber-dust in the proposed section for quite some time, and I'd like to suggest that instead of passing it onto the (sometimes harsh) voting stage immediatly that it should first be subject to the critisism of others as it is now, but with the important difference of that it only stays there for a measured amount of time, say one week?
Only then should it be passed on to the voting stage, having hopefully gathered some useful edits in the time that it was being proposed.

Think of it as, if the article in question was a candidate for presidential elections, having election rallies (here shown as the "proposed" stage) before the elections of becoming president simply with the key difference being that the election rallies are finite.

Those are my thoughts on the matter, apologies for butting into a question destined for Eptalon's ears.
A very professional sounding :P Gwib-(talk)- 20:16, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello all, thanks for your messages. I have left a reply on Phaedriel's talk page, as to her comments above. I think limiting the amount of time an article has to gather dust (as pvgood) would be a good option. Whether this time should be one week, or more, is open for discussion. Depending on which of the 4 requirements are lacking (The vote always is), it might take quite a bit of time to fix the article though (Think about needing to fix items 2,4,8,and 9 of the guideline). --Eptalon 20:59, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The only thing I see as a problem is which civilisations to write about. There were many I would like to add, such as the Egyptians, Mesopotamians (Assyrians, Babylonians, Sumerians, etc.), Harrapans, and Chinese. I just don't know which ones should have their own section. So, I was wondering, which civilisations (excluding Greece and Rome) do you think should have a section? --Isis§(talk) 16:27, 20 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds good. But, I don't agree about the Mesopotamian cultures. Kind of similar, but unique. Also, the great thing is, I'm not an expert, either. :) --Isis§(talk) 16:52, 20 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed changes for VG articles[change source]

Dear Eptalon, after the discussion we took part on at Wikipedia talk:Requirements for very good articles, it appears that there's consensus to implement the changes you suggested. Even tho four editors took part in that debate, there's been ample time without any further input; and as you correctly pointed out, these are fortunately not major changes. For this, I humbly recommend that you put them in practice, after posting a notification at Simple Talk and updating Wikipedia:Proposed very good articles. The two-week period for being listed at Proposals means some of the current ones that exceed that time should be delisted; I'd suggest fresh relisting World History, tho, since I know Isis and you are working on it. As for the new VG templates, the small one is ready, and it's at {{vgood-small}}. The bigger one we currently use can go on bottom, as you suggested. To prevent it from overlapping other contents, the following should be added to it as first line of the {{vgood}} template: {{-}}. Let me know if I can assist you in any way.

By the way, thank you so much for your input at the votes for Hanami, and for fixing Geisha yourself. I sincerely hope you liked those articles; writing them was a demanding, but very fulfilling task, one that filled me with an enthusiasm I had not felt in many, many months. Have a beautiful day! :) Love, Phaedriel - 11:19, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

en and then complex[change source]

On lorem ipsum, you copied the entire text from en and then just stuck a complex tag at the top. I don't personally think that's right, you should rewrite the article from scratched based on the information from en. Jordan - talk 15:53, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That wasn't the point, I don't think that we should whole copy articles from EN in the first place, just so we can stick a {{complex}} tag on the top and get round to it later. It's much easier and becomes easier to understand when it's written from the ground up, rather by stripping it of the complex bits from an existing article. Increasing Burden of School Bags

India had been a colony of Britain for more than two centuries. Although, we have become independent in terms of our own constitution, but still we are slave mentally and psychologically our attire is our own but the person within it is motivated by the British ideology. As we all know that today it is an era of cutthroat competition. So we can't deny the rapidly increasing importance of English language. At present English has become a global language. In the hour of liberalization, privatization and globalization English language has rooted firmly its footings in the mind of each and every citizen of the world. In order to be successful English has become necessary to be learned by all. English is not as simple as it appears to be become it is a complicated admixture of several European languages, such as- Greek, Latin, French, German, English etc. Thus it possesses approximately ten lack words. India is a developing country. Its population is more than 100 crore. Here we have lack o resources & production, so it has always been a challenge for us to educate all the citizens. Due to over population the competition is getting more complicated and horrible. As a matter of fact our competition is with the western countries where English is spoken in general. Therefore we, Indians being from rural and Hindi background, are quite unable to learn all these words. Though, we in no sphere of life, lag behind the Britishers but our main problem is of foreign language which is imposed not inculcated in our veins. I can claim that the Europeons will certainly face the same problem if Hindi is posed to them. Therefore, due to the increasing world over significance of English language we can't of avoid it. We have to learn it how to speak, how to write and how to make other people understand our feeling. Now the question that arises before us is what should be done to teach English to all the Indians in the simplest possible way? How can it be learnt by all? It seems next to impossible to learn ten lakh words for every Indian. So I am inclined to create a modified English named after Rajeev Gandhi, which will include about one lakh words and will also facilitate the Indians to interact with the foreigners in the easiest possible way. Reduction of words requires great consideration and strenuous efforts. We can drop out the undesired words, synonyms, undesired homonyms and homophones. I am determined to create an easily intelligible English, which will include our colloquial terms and the most essential words. As we see newspapers in English language are daily published across the country but very few people are able to read them and translate because the English used in these papers is complicated, vague and completely unintelligible for the common people. This way these newspapers remain beyond the reach of the billons of Indian. I think simple and easy English must be used in writing newspapers and magazines by doing so we will be able to reach the hearts of those people who are responsible to run bear and feed this country, until or unless we teach English to our frames, laborers and commoners, the vision 2020 of developed India will surely break down.

Today we boast of the fastest growing economy of India but the question is that “Is this economy able to provide bread to the needy ones?" No, money is getting accumulated in the bags of very few people who belong to the upper strata of the society and know the cruel ways how to exploit economically, culturally and sociably the innocent and ignorant people of this nation in the so called English fashion.

Therefore in order to bring the farthest standing people into the mainstream of development we will have to teach them this Rajeev Gandhi English and students will learn it in play way method. Undoubtedly I can claim it will prove a boon for the general masses of this poor nation. It is a revolutionary step and will become a milestone in the history of human development.
