Simple word list

FYI, I moved your simple word list page to your userspace because it didn't look like it belonged in mainspace. It's now at User:Etamni/Simple word list. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:18, 16 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Auntof6. I thought I had put it within my userspace, but I guess it was done incorrectly. Etamni | ✉   05:21, 16 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Austin Powers

Etamni, if you are working on this article, please put an "under construction" template on it. Otherwise it might get deleted because it's currently an unsimplified copy from enwiki. Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:17, 19 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Actually, I gave you the wrong one, so I just changed it to the "simplifying" template. Let me know if you need any suggestions on simplifying. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:26, 19 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Auntof6:, When I started, the entire Austin Powers (character) article consisted of a "qd" tag and the sentence, Austin Powers is a fictional British spy with really bad teeth. Now, there is an actual article in that space. It still needs work, and probably needs to be slimmed down just a bit, but I'm done with it for the moment. Any further editing you want to do is welcome. Ironically, I was never a big fan of the Austin Powers movies, but they sure made a boat-load of money! lol people are being mean to me here i´m a new editor who only wants to edit good stuff you can´t keep giving me warnings because i really want to do good things! :D —This unsigned comment was added by DogPog1000 (talkchanges) 08:34, 17 December 2015 (UTC)

The fact that you edited the first word of your comment from the correct "Lol" to the incorrect "lol" shows that you are using a persona -- you want us to get an impression of you that is different from reality. The fact that many of your edit summaries include statements about how helpful you want us to believe you think you are, suggests that the opposite is true. The fact that most of your edits have had to be reverted suggests that you are being deliberately non-helpful. The fact that you refuse to type the characters "~~~~" to sign your posts, suggests that you simply wish to troll this website and not make meaningful contributions. I suspect you intend to continue this behavior until you are blocked. Have no fear, I'm sure someone will be along shortly to take care of that. Etamni | ✉   15:45, 17 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Broadband internet went out

Hey all! My internet went out and I'm not sure why. This will force a (hopefully brief) wikibreak until the issue is resolved. As may be obvious, I'm making this edit from my mobile device and mobile account, but I hate editing this way. Main account e-mail is turned on, and reaches my phone, so if anything urgent comes up, feel free to send e-mail. Ipadguy

Etamni, if you have an issue with anything on Ipadguy's user pages, please bring it up with an admin. In particular, the issue you mentioned in the RfD you created is not an issue that should be decided by the community, so I closed the RfD. You are welcome to bring it up at WP:AN, but the remedy would be to change or remove the image, not to delete the page. However, please don't change another user's page yourself. Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 20:26, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Auntof6, Let's discuss this. First, we don't have a clear guideline for addressing non-free content on user pages. On EnWiki, problems in user-space (including inappropriate use of "fair use" items) are dealt with at en:WP:MfD -- which is community discussion, not strictly an administrative function. Because all "XfD" pages (from EnWiki) are consolidated into our "RfD" page, that seemed to be the appropriate place for this issue. Second, the user's "topicon" page has one purpose and one purpose only: to place the Apple Inc. trademark at the top of his page. Removing just the image guts the page and renders it useless. The userbox could be saved -- the logo can be removed without making the userbox non-functional -- but this only makes sense if the user will be editing here again. Third, the words However, please don't change another user's page yourself, comes off as a bit bitey, as it assumes I would do this. Etamni | ✉   21:00, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Auntof6: (re-pinging as first was done incorrectly) Etamni | ✉   21:00, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
I can see how someone would think that RfD would be the right place, but we don't do things the same as enwiki. At RfD, we have community discussion of whether we want to keep something. To me, it isn't the place to discuss something that's interpretation of policy. Either the policy allows it or it doesn't. I'm sorry if my statement was bitey: I had just said that the image could be removed or changed, but wanted to emphasize that, since it was on a user page, it was better for other users not to do that themselves. And, as I said, the way to deal with an inappropriate image is to change or remove it, not to delete the page: that might mean blanking the page, but it shouldn't mean deleting it altogether. Of course, an admin might decide to delete the page because it belongs to an indef'd user, but that is also not a matter for RfD discussion. --Auntof6 (talk) 21:19, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the warm welcome and the help with getting my footing! I'll be adding this to the talk of the page in question as well.

The "defunct" site mentioned was theflatearthsociety.net for the "International Alliance of Flat Earth Groups" which is no longer under operation and simply redirects to theflatearthsociety.org . It makes sense to have both the sites, if they are both legitimate, I agree.

Are you certain that the tfes link does not lack notability and these links aren't being placed as COI? I can find no reference to it in the media and the content seems largely duplicated from the other site which lead me to assume that tfes was simply somebody copying over theflatearthsociety and spamming wikipedia for Self Promotion. The site I linked however seems to be referenced from several notable sources such as The Guardian http://www.theguardian.com/global/2010/feb/23/flat-earth-society and Paste Magazine http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2016/03/a-conversation-with-a-flat-earth-believer.html as well as books like https://books.google.com/books?id=sFgXAwAAQBAJ&pg=PA286&lpg=PA286#v=onepage&q&f=false and http://www.amazon.com/Bogus-Science-People-Believe-Figures/dp/B00BQAJBPI and academic papers such as http://arxiv.org/abs/1305.0393 .

Their library also looks to be significantly larger which leads me to believe they are the original source of the materials on both sites. The site I added looks to be established far earlier as well in 2003. I can also find no instance of the other sites existence outside of their online forum and some reddit posts. https://simple.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Flat_Earth_Society&diff=4658129&oldid=4528640 This is the change where it was added, corresponding to the date that tfes claims to be founded. This looks to me to be a clear case of COI as you've mentioned. What are your thoughts? WakingJohn (talk) 16:47, 2 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I edited the page of Romania because it incorrectly lists it as being in Central Europe. You claimed that I was being "biased" when I was not. Romania is geographically in Southeastern or Eastern Europe. Central Europe is traditionally defined as the countries of Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, and sometimes Croatia and Germany. How was I being biased? Every major source that you look up information on Romania lists it as being in Southeastern or Eastern Europe. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.119.175.240 (talk) 20:22, 16 May 2016‎ (UTC)[reply]

the areas around and nearby Carpathian Mountains is in the Central Europe
Hello user:69.119.175.240. The Central Europe article explains that some people consider Romania to be in Central Europe, while others will refer to it as Southeastern Europe or Eastern Europe. To quote from the Central Europe article, Central Europe is the region around the Alps and Carpathian Mountains... This clearly encompasses Romania, as can be seen on the various maps. I think it is important that we keep both points of view in the article, rather than trying to follow just one of them. The view of Romania as being part of Eastern or Southeastern Europe may be declining, but it is still held by many, so it should stay. The fact that more and more people are looking at the issue from a geographical (rather than political) definition, means that their point of view also needs to be reflected. I would welcome a more comprehensive (but simple) explanation of this in the article, but we should not erase one point of view in favor of the other simply to reflect how we view the issue ourselves. Can I use your edit notice for my userpages? Krett12 (talk) 23:52, 7 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Krett12: I found it on EnWiki -- anyone may copy the code and use it. It is worded as a user-page edit notice; it might not be quite appropriate for a talk page. Etamni | ✉   06:51, 8 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I already have a talk page one. Who's the original creator? Tell them they're a genius. Krett12 (talk) 14:11, 8 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The source is credited in a hidden comment in the edit notice. That said, there are older pages with similar edit notices, but I like the formatting of that one the best. Etamni | ✉   14:23, 8 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
