What is this? A man new to Wikipedia gets blocked so quickly? What have I done? I am trying to contribute to the Wikipedia and my articles are blocked. 71.201.88.178 (talk) 02:22, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please respond. I need an admin now more than ever. 71.201.88.178 (talk) 02:25, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

QDing categories
While Category:Authors was empty at the time you tagged it, it hasn't existed for even a day. Empty categories should only be Qd'd after four days of being empty. Anyways, it's no longer empty. Cheers,--Fairfield Deleted? 22:07, 27 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Hi, I put this up for QD because it was created by me today after an anon created Category:Author (at the same time as creating Category:Journalist which already exists as Category:Journalists) and so the I created Category:Authors because the name was better (plural) and then I further found that Category:Writers was already made (with many cats under it). So I moved the one article out of it and put it the right cat and then put Category:Authors up for deletion. I see Clarity has put an article into it, one that should really be put into the correct nationalility category under Category:Writers by nationality. So it was created in error and still shouldn't be here, imo :) fr33kman t - c 22:15, 27 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- But a catredirect is just as good. :) fr33kman t - c 22:20, 27 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Deletion
I think that there was no need to delete the whole article. If you think that a category was wrong, you only need to change that fact, not to delete the article.--200.29.134.180 (talk) 00:09, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- I did change the category and then left the article alone. I didn't nominate the article for deletion; I merely agreed with it. This article is about a person that is not notable enough to have an encyclopedia article about them and has also been put onto many wikipedias and deleted from some of them. It is also up for deletion elsewhere as we speak. Please read WP:V, en:WP:NOR, WP:NPOV and WP:RS. fr33kman t - c 00:15, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The only real author of the deletion of the articles about Jorge Queirolo Bravo is an argentinian wikipedian named Kved. In fact that is not his real name. His real name is (deleted by fr33kman). He promoted the deletion of all his articles some months ago because he does not like his books. That´s the reality.--200.29.134.180 (talk) 00:25, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Right. If people went aroung deleting articles because they didn't like them, then Wikipedia would be dead. SimonKSK 00:29, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Those other deletion discussions are not relevant to us here. We will decide the case on its merits. I have searched and can still find nothing that makes him notable enough for this wikipedia. Just because someone has written one or a dozen books does not mean they are worthy of an article. There are thousands of authors that publish each year, the vast majority will not become famous. Regards, fr33kman t - c 00:32, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Is the Wikipedia in English just for very famous writers or people? What does a writer need to be here? The Nobel Literature Award? Or even more?--200.29.134.180 (talk) 00:40, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Well the Nobel prize would more than do it. What we need are newspaper (paper newspapers), major magazines, books by other people about him etc. Not stuff he's written about himself, or blogs or comments he has to make about various things. We need other people to talk about him. fr33kman t - c 00:47, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Farid Suleman
I disagree with your decline of the speedy deletion at Farid Suleman. A3 applies to transwikied pages with little to no changes. Looking at this difference (and ignoring the infoboxes), three words were change in the article. The article, on Simple, has a complex tag. A3 is meant to weed out pages that are copied from other Wikipedias without being simplified. Since it has a complex tag (and it should), I don't see how this meets the standard of being brought over and simplified enough. Either way (talk) 05:07, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- I did consider that not enough simplification was done but could only really see three words that were not in the word list; finalist, nominated and upcoming. Since I gave atribution to the source of the article on enWP (via the talk page) I felt that those three words could be dealt with. I'm not really one to delete if it can be saved, and I feel it can be saved. If you feel otherwise let me know. Cheers fr33kman talk 05:17, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Chairman, frequent, and discussions are also not from the list. Additionally, the rephrasing of the article did not make it to simple English. "Made news stories" makes it seem like the person wrote articles. "He last spent" does not mean the same as "he previously spent." Overall, this article is too similar to the English article, and did not change to a Simple article. Either way (talk) 05:24, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Frequent and discussion are most certainly in the list. Chairman is not, I agree. Do you feel it is better to delete an article that is notable on account of four words or fix it? fr33kman talk 05:27, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Frequent and discussion are not at Wikipedia:List of 1000 basic words. It is not based on four words. It is based on the fact that it was a transwikied page that did not make the changes necessary to simplify the article. Three changes were made, and two of those three changes did not simplify the article. Either way (talk) 05:33, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Sorry, but "frequent" and "discussion" are both at Wikipedia:Basic English combined wordlist (which I use since it is under the WP:Help page and since we don't have a actual definition of Simple English yet). I feel that if an article can be saved by a very simple edit then it should be, which is why I declined the QD. The main problems with the article was not the lack of simplification but the lack of crediting the source (which I corrected), the few extra needed edits are something I am in the middle of now; and it won't be a large edit. fr33kman talk 05:42, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

- Hi! Not the 300 most common words, but a word list that we use that we assume most readers will understand can be found at Wikipedia:Basic English combined wordlist. Words not on that list should either be explained in the article or should get wikilinks or wiktlinks added to them. :) fr33kman talk 06:24, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey thanks! I'd appreciate that very much. I hadn't even thought about the fact I don't have it here... I've got to say, writing here is a lot different than at en.wiki. Vandalism?
I'm new to editing any kind of wiki... so just want to check I'm not getting in the way by reverting these changes? FrancesO (talk) 23:21, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Dare I ask if it's normal for vandalism to be constant? It seems somewhat sad if that's the case. FrancesO (talk) 23:59, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Most vandals stop after being warned once or twice. Some continue on until they are blocked. Feel free to warn users (which you must do first) and report them if they continue. Cheers fr33kman talk 00:04, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, apologies. I'll be sure to do things in the correct order next time. :) FrancesO (talk) 00:05, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Not a problem, we were all new once. :) I've blocked that user because of the number of vandal edits they did and because there were two warnings given; one was an automatic one and then I gave a final warning which they ignored. If the vandalism is something that is not too rude, not racist or looks like they are just messing about, please WP:AGF and use a level 1 warning. If it is vandalism that does not look like they are messing about use a level 2 straight away; if they use foul language or insult people you can go straight to a level 3 as a first warning. If you notice they have done lots in a short time (before they are warned by you), use a level 4im warning which is an "only warning" type. After they get to level 4 or level 4im and they still vandalise then report them to WP:VIP, but please use the right format of report; either, {{vandal|their username}} - your reasons for wanting them blocked (ie: vandalism after a final warning) and then sign your name with ~~~~. You use {{ipvandal|IP address}} for an IP address that is vandalising. Only report active vandals, it is no use reporting a vandal that was around 8 hours ago and then went away. Make sure you check WP:VANDAL for the various warning templates to use. Don't be afraid to ask questions! Thanks for you help and your report fr33kman talk 00:21, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for all the advice; you've been very welcoming :) I'll be sure to take it all into account. FrancesO (talk) 17:58, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

(Really homesick at the moment though, which is why I'm doing the Canadian articles [making it worse]) :( On a brighter note (well, not really) I have made my first two blocks tonight :) fr33kman talk 01:36, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Right I knew you were in England lol...Its late....I just saw your Younge St. article the other day and was like hmm only someone from Toronto. I am originally from Thunder Bay so the other side of Ontario, but I just moved to Halifax a couple months ago. (after being in Calgary for a number of years) WooWoo how's ya feeling about being an admin, if you have any questions feel free to ask me. - Haha. I used to live in Calgary (SW) and have family in Halifax. I've only passed through T-Bay however, doing the trans-Canada hwy. The thing I miss the most is Tim Horton's. I heard there was one in England and drove 6 hours to get a fix only to find out it closed three days before due to lack of sales! The Brits don't know coffee! I even wrote a letter to them begging them to send me a can of coffee and box of sour cream glazed donuts. They said they didn't do mail order but sent me some coupons, that are now expired?!?! :( Being an admins fine so far, I run a private MediaWiki wiki so I understand the basic software, but the WMF projects have highly customised code. I think I'll be cool with the average admin type stuff but will always ask when I don't know what to do or how to do it. It's interesting just how much more stuff you have access to; like being able to view deleted pages if you want to, and blocking someone was satisfying as you can really do something quickly about a persistant vandal. I'm torn between just doing a delete and letting an editor get some QD tags under their belt. I'm also not sure if it is appropriate to just give an editor who is good, been around and is fighting vandals rollback or wait for them to request it? Cheers fr33kman talk 01:57, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Personally I never give rollback to someone unless they ask for it, if I see a real need for it I will ask them if they want it. (Thought I have never given anyone rollback on simple) As for deleting articles on my own, on en.wiki I don't believe in deleting your own qds and will just tag it for another admin to do. But on a wiki this small since everyone can easily see what I do on Recent changes I tend to delete my own, but if its questionable I will QD it like I did the other day with a page I thought could go either way. As for the Tim Hortons that really sucks about the drive. I can't imagine, I love Tim's but I don't drink coffee so I don't know if I would miss it as much as many other people. I grew up on Robin's Donuts because Thunder Bay was where that chain started and were successful until recently at keeping Tim Hortons to only one location, so that probably also plays into it. -Djsasso (talk) 02:05, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- I lived for a while in Mississauga and near where I lived they had 3 locations at one intersection. I'll be going back in July and will hit the first Tims I can find until I can't move any more ;) (I have heard that there is a new location near London on the M25 but will have to call them first as I'm not doing another drive like that.) Thanks for the info about the QDs and rollback fr33kman talk 02:12, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
