Thanks for the welcome, wiooiw. And, thanks for the quick undo on SF too! I haven't been so active on the English Wikipedia, but I've done a lot on Wikitravel. The help pages are pretty good. Ted O'Neill (talk) 02:36, 20 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

First efforts[change source]

Well done with your first few edits, writing in simple English is quite a challenge. If you use Firefox as a browser there are a few tricks to make it easier. Always feel free to ask a question, --Peterdownunder (talk) 07:20, 22 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Belinda has given you some cookies! Now enjoy them!

Keep up the good work, Gotanda. :) I hope you continue to be active here! And thank you for all the nice helpful edits you've done till now. See you around! Drop me a question on my talkpage if you want. Affably, Belle tête-à-tête 04:32, 23 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for all your excellent changes, Gotanda. :) You're already a wonderful help to our community. Please keep up the great work! —Clementina talk 03:16, 25 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I'm having fun here. This is a great resource for English Language Learners. I can procrastinate when I don't feel like doing my actual work, but still help my students at the same time. Perfect combination! Ted O'Neill (talk) 01:19, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That's great! :) I'm glad you're enjoying yourself here, and apologies for my glitch here. :p Please do ask me if you need any help whatsoever. Grace and peace, —Clementina talk 11:07, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

revert?[change source]

Was there a reason for this revert? I added the information again without realizing it was removed previously, but I can assure you it is 100% accurate. Griffinofwales (talk) 15:58, 7 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'll confess, I didn't check the information because it just looked like a joke. The date was 2019. Now I realize that was just a typo. The page is now correct with 2010. Sorry about that! Ted (talk) 21:22, 7 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Flood flag[change source]

Do you want a flood flag? Kansan (talk) 04:12, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think you need it. You have been flooding for a long time now. Hazard-SJ Talk 04:13, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hi! Yes, please! Sorry I had no idea that such a thing existed. Just searched it. Didn't mean to spam the changes list. Got a couple dozen more changes to go. Ted (talk) 04:15, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No problem; thanks for your help. Let me know when you're done and I can take it off. Thanks! Kansan (talk) 04:17, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Will do! Ted (talk) 04:18, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There is no such thing on en (it isn't needed there). Hazard-SJ Talk 04:25, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the info. I'll know what to do next time. There are a ton of Japan-related links that will need disambiguation eventually. It would be nice if there was a way to automate it, but each one needs some interpretation/checking. But, I figure it is better to try to catch some of the big ones sooner rather than later. The "What links here" will only get worse. Ted (talk) 04:28, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Just to let you know, I moved Chiba Prefecture to Chiba prefecture. Hazard-SJ Talk 04:37, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Is the small "p" better? I looked at Japan where they all seem to be capitalized. Ted (talk) 04:45, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Categories[change source]

Hello, Gotanda! HotCat, a gadget, can help with adding / changing / removing categories. The guideline is at WP:CAT. I'd write more but I don't have much time. πr2 (talk • changes) 04:25, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

History of the U.S. VGA review[change source]

I've addressed your concerns. If an article isn't protected, you can edit it, and if others don't like it, they can just undo it. Also, remember to sign your posts Purplebackpack89 16:25, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for reading and responding to all of my comments and suggestions. I know that I "can" edit, but looking at requirement 6 for VGA--The last few revisions should be minor changes (like spell-checking or link-fixing)--I wasn't sure if going through and doing some re-writing would then cause a problem for your proposal. Seems one of those contradictory parts of the process. And I guess my signature was in the wrong spot. Thanks. Ted (talk) 23:38, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Kitties grow to become cats... Newcomers grow to become 'crats...[change source]

Hey there, Teddy dear! I've noticed this edit, and just thought I'd like to give some advice (I'm sorry if this is butting into other people's affairs and business :P). There exists a gadget called Hot Cat that helps you in adding/removing/replacing categories. It's really very helpful, and I use it sometimes when I'm too lazy to manually type down [[Category:<insert category name here>]]. You can find it in your settings -> gadgets -> Editing gadgets -> check little white box next to the words Hot Cat: Easily add / remove / change a category on an image, with name suggestion. Sorry, I like to help editors around as much as possible. You probably know how to do it all by now, but just wanted to make sure you're most comfortable in your editing. Thanks! Warmly, Bella tête-à-tête 11:15, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for butting in, Bella. I had looked into Hot Cat but found the more technical info at MediaWiki:Gadget-Hotcat.js. Pointing me to the Gadgets page where I could actually turn it on, rather than look at Javascript, was just what I needed. Any help with editing is always much appreciated. Ted (talk) 10:32, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Just for future reference.[change source]

First of all, thanks for all the hard work you've been putting in recently on the wiki. Just a heads up: I noticed that you suggested that an IP editor use edit summaries and a flood flag. Thank you for asking them to use an edit summary, but the software isn't set up to give non-logged in users flood flags. No big deal, just thought I'd let you know. Kansan (talk) 23:13, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads up. Ted (talk) 10:27, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

History of U.S./Word engine[change source]

I've responded to your word engine thread. Largely, if something is defined in the next sentence or two, especially if it's a commonly used historical term like "cult of domesticity" or "freeborn Englishmen", it shouldn't be simplified as that loses too much of the meaning. Also, a couple of proper nouns showed up in your word engine...that shouldn't have happened Purplebackpack89 05:34, 28 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reply. I'll just say it isn't "my" word engine. It is from the Université du Québec à Montréal and is widely used by researchers and second language educators. There are several vocabulary profilers on the site. The BNC-20 I used is clearly marked as "experimental" but it is much more sophisticated. It did pick up a few proper nouns, but also gives a more nuanced view of the vocabulary used. Thanks, Ted (talk) 00:22, 29 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed you think that articles on several topics (Cult of domesticity, Phyllis Schafly, Roe v. Wade, Moral Majority, indentured servants and Grange) need to be created. Would you mind creating them yourself? I've already created about 50 articles for this VGA and I appreciate it if someone else created some. Also, remember that things don't need to be both defined and linked...if I say that "The cult of domesticity was...", that is generally enough explanation for simple speakers. And an article on history should not be devoid of commonly used historic terms. Purplebackpack89 02:10, 29 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Already started Indentured servant but still needs more. Will see what I can get to. Ted (talk) 02:17, 29 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I changed the names of the sections in the Postwar/Cold War era. The main section is now called "Postwar/Cold War Era, 1945-1991" and the subsections are "Cold War" and "Domestic and Social issues"

Organizational changes[change source]

For starters, separating Bush's election from his presidency is a bad idea, especially since you created a one-sentence paragraph. I honestly think that 2001 rather than 1989/91 is a bad split....it suggests that the War on Terror is more important than the Cold War, which probably isn't true. Also, the current issues paragraph was never created, but I included it in the outline as it is common topic for the last chapter of history books. Purplebackpack89 04:16, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Also, when you start a new topic like that, please start new threads rather than continuing old ones. I have started a new thread pertaining to this, and copied your comments down to it Purplebackpack89 04:44, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the advice re Threads. It is sometimes hard to know when to start a new one or not. I wasn't aware of rules on that. As far as the one-sentence paragraph goes, the easy thing to do is expand it, but I thought I'd let the current changes get a few comments from people first before putting more into it. In any event, Bush did not become president in 2000, so parts of that change need to remain. As far as GWoT vs Cold War, I specifically did not put the War on Terror in there as such. There is no statement of relative importance. The invasions of Iraq and Afganistan are significant though and I think they should be clearly identified as invasions, not just going to.
If editors do not like the 2001 split (I did outline the reasons) then some better split is needed. Post Cold War can't go on forever and isn't a useful description for some of the events. Thanks, Ted (talk) 04:52, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Few things: The War in Afghanistan (note the h) has not gone on longer than Vietnam, as the United States was involved five years before Tonkin Gulf. They are significant, but they also are daughter articles--the particulars of invasion and strategy can be covered in their articles. My comment largely concerns the amount of content there is about the Bush Administration compared to other administrations. And I see nothing wrong with "Post-Cold War", as many of our political, military and diplomatic relations are still influenced by the Cold War (for example, the U.S. still has an army stationed in Europe). Purplebackpack89 08:49, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I stand corrected on the "h". Let's see what anyone else has to say about the rest. Thanks, Ted (talk) 11:03, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Less semantics arguments...[change source]

...more creating articles, PLEASE. You could have created several of the above articles with the amount of content you posted on talk pages recently. Please create some of the the above articles. Thank you, Purplebackpack89 03:27, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What some call semantics, others might call creating meaning accurately. (Fewer should be used with countable nouns such as arguments.)
I'll thank you to let me decide what I do with my own time. I've wasted enough of it on having to explain myself while contributing to the VGA review.
I really don't have to work to your requests. More comments that begin with "I", and fewer that include "you have to", please. Ted (talk) 03:51, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

For spending lots of time improving the wiki in various ways, including writing and working with article promotion. Kansan (talk) 06:26, 25 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Kansan. I really enjoy working on articles here. I find it a good writing exercise with a clear focus and a real audience. Plus, I get to reach more language learners than I do in my own classroom. Barnstar is much appreciated, too. Thanks for making time for some feedback. See you around. I should of been a bit more kind when I approached that article, but you really helped out that new user! Mr. Berty (seasons greetings!) talk/stalk 16:12, 19 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! But I'm not sure I did myself any favors. He's broken copyright again. On the other hand, it's karma. I once turned a few students loose on Wikitravel years ago and unleashed all kinds of copyright problems. What goes around.... Gotanda (talk) 06:44, 20 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
