How we will see unregistered users[change source]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

@TTP1233: The bot is ready to run trial edits when manually directed by me. You do have a properly configured template on your page so I can direct the bot to your talk page, if you'd like. This would be a one-time run until the bot is formally approved. Operator873 connect 22:12, 9 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@TTP1233: I noticed the bot hasn't visited your page and you recently did a manual revert. Have you added the {{User:MiszaBot/config}} (User:MiszaBot/config) to your talk page yet? This is what tells the bot to archive, what to archive, and where to archive it. You can check my talk page for an example. Operator873 connect 18:37, 25 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Operator873 It was there since 2021 I guess before getting inactive. You bot did archive 2 threads last time. I think there is some disturbance after a change in the configuration. Can you modify the archiving configuration on my talk page? I won't mind. --DRC (User:TTP1233) (talk . e-mail . contrib) 03:13, 26 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@TTP1233: Not sure if this is related to the issue you're having, but the archiving bot does require a valid signature in a section before it will archive it. At least one of the three sections you recently manually archived didn't have a signature at all. -- Auntof6 (talk) 03:49, 26 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Auntof6 sorry for late response as I'm in a wikibreak. Hmm, I remember an IP didn't sign the section about not marking a page for QD. That is why the bot didn't archived. Thank you for pointing that out. --DRC (User:TTP1233) (talk . e-mail . contrib) 06:52, 27 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Weather, conditions the coming of the end wasn't a test, it was the equivalent of en:Climate apocalypse; the text was copied from there but changed to Basic English using Simplish.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.52.88.245 (talkcontribs) 05:12, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @209.52.88.245:. Couple things to unpack here... First, copying and pasting content from another project into this project is already disallowed without attribution. Second, if memory serves, machine translation from any language into any other language is discouraged globally, if not flatly disallowed, since machines frequently can't understand tone and context. So you saying you used Simplish to "translate" the article is already a no-no as it were. Thirdly, you should really review our guide to writting Simple English pages before you proceed any further because competency is required on any Wikipedia project. And don't forget to sign your posts on talk pages and project pages by typing ~~~~ at the end of your message. Operator873 connect 06:28, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. - If you copied the content from en:Climate apocalypse, why did you name the page you pasted that content into on this project Weather, conditions the coming of the end?? That really doesn't make much sense at all. Operator873 connect 06:30, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
P.S.S. - Now that I think about it, you probably named it Weather, conditions the coming of the end because that's what the machine translator spit out... which is a great example and demonstration of why they aren't allowed. Operator873 connect 06:31, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I actually did attribute in my edit summary. And Help:Translate English into Simple English#General advice on better writing

@PurpleDiva13wear: A few reasons. The main one is you copy/pasted that page from another wiki and it wasn't original work. Your reverts[change source]

I meant this, this, and this. Please, do not be so quick, and delve into the issue first. All of your reverts were unfounded, and actually rereverted. Every time I break some stereotype I am immediately taken for a vandal, troll or idiot. But I am not one them, instead I am a programmer and self-taught philosopher, and I love to explore the complexity of life. 85.193.215.210 (talk) 02:19, 25 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@85.193.215.210: Here on Wikipedia, competence is required. This means you need to understand the rules here before you start forcing your opinion. On this edit, you asked for a single word that was complex. You obviously haven't read the word list which provides a very good guidance on Simple English. Now you can tell me which words were complex in your edits. This edit was reverted because not only was the language better before your edit, the first word convulsion is not the name of the article, and it should be. Finally, this edit was reverted as you introduce a formula clearly of your own creation into the article. This is flatly not allowed. You may want to ensure you're following the rules yourself before you accuse others of breaking them. :) Operator873 connect 03:31, 25 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You wrote:
Yes, and I am competent, and I promote plain English everywhere, even in the standard Wikipedia. Unfortunately I was often accused of unnecessary dumbing down, and my edits were reverted.
Here are some of those reverts:
"almost" -> "all but" [1]
"ease" -> "assuage",   "courage" -> "fortitude" [2]
"bad" -> "desultory" [3]
"of them" -> "thereof" [4]
"limited" -> "hamstrung" [5]
"instead of" -> "in lieu of" [6]
Now I am accused of too complex language. Isn't it ironic?
You wrote:
  • You obviously haven't read the word list which provides a very good guidance on Simple English.
What a hasty conclusion. I did see and analyze those words many times.
  • Now you can tell me which words were complex in your edits.
Your argument is clearly far-fetched. You know very well that the rule of using those 1500 words does not apply to specialized vocabularies used in certain fields. For example, that word list does not contain the word "quantum". How do you imagine an article about quantum mechanics without the word "quantum"? By this logic we should delete almost all articles!
  • This edit was reverted because not only was the language better before your edit, (...)
Well, surfing medical websites and taking care of readability took me several hours, because I am a perfectionist. Could you please show me which words or phrases were more readable before my edit? If you point them out I will be very grateful to you.
  • (...) the first word convulsion is not the name of the article, and it should be.
I fully agree, but as an IP user I cannot change the names of articles. So, please do it for the sake of the Wikipedia because the quality of my edit is very high, and I sacrificed much time to delve into the subject.
  • Finally, this edit was reverted as you introduce a formula clearly of your own creation into the article.
Yes, that formula was my creation, because I am extremely creative by nature. But note that my (very simple) formula expresses the concept of talent much simpler than words. According to the rules of Wikipedia even such a simple equation should be covered by a source because it is math, which is by nature hard to understand. I do not agree that every mathematical expression is hard to understand. The best example is my simple equation. But you might say that "everything in the article should be sourced". No, not everything - for a variety of reasons. For example language itself does not have to be sourced, and such a simple equation is even simpler than any of those 1500 words, though maybe not for preschoolers. But, just to be clear, I will do the same only by words, especially for you. Oh my God, that sarcasm was not intended - by no means do I take you for a preschooler ;-)
To sum up. Under various IPs I have made many edits in this Wikipedia, and all of them are of high value. But the three of them, which were top notch and the most time consuming (a total of 12 hours), looked strange, because they broke some stereotypes. And you - the administrator - reverted them, because you did not want to sacrifice too much time for a deeper analysis. I was broken and even thought of quitting. Now you are trying to save your face. No problem. I am not an angel either. The only problem is our future cooperation.
Digression: I found an article in which all sentences are false :-) 85.193.215.210 (talk) 17:49, 25 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@85.193.215.210: WP:CIR does not refer to your competency as a person or professional but your competency as an editor on this project. That means whether or not you understand and can follow the rules on this project. You linked a bunch of changes you made on the English Wikipedia... but this is the Simple English Wikipedia and isn't connected to that project. It is a fully separate project similar to how the Italian or Portuguese Wikipedia isn't the English Wikipedia. Continuing that example, our rules are different here than on the English Wikipedia so what you're told there does not apply here.
You're right! With technical articles like quantum mechanics, simple language can't always be used to discussed non-simple topics. Where possible, we should be linking those complex words to either their own article within this project or to the Simple English Wiktionary in a pinch. But that does not excuse or permit superfluous words that don't need to be used like according or numerical or achieve in this edit for example. See WP:CIR.
When an editor on this project reverts an edit you make and with an edit summary like introduced complex language or better before, it's referring to the readability of the article. I don't think you improved the article with your "several hours" of work. See WP:CIR.
I think the Seizure article should stay seizure. So no, I won't move it. And I won't re-revert your edit because there's a rule against it... but someone else can and might. If they do, you can't revert that. See WP:3RR and WP:CIR.
Thank you for admitting you were introducing original research to the article which is clearly and specifically not allowed. This goes towards furthering your very own demonstration that you are a WP:CIR concern on this project.
Yes, I fully understand that you may have good intentions, but this is the 2nd project you've actively worked on that you want to make your own rules and do your own thing. That's not how any Wikipedia works. This is a cooperatively created encyclopedia. The only content here should be opinions that are peer reviewed or otherwise subject to outside scrutiny. This is why we require sources for information and disallow original research. Your comment about being angry that 3 edits that took you 12 hours to make being reverted further advances evidence you may not understand how Wikipedia works. To that point, I did review your edits and reverted them for the reasons provided. I don't know you from any other editor because you are an anonymous editor, which is great. But that also means I have no idea who you are and no one here has any reason to try and "save face" in respect to your activities. As a digression, yes I saw your talk page and it also furthers the concern about WP:CIR. On any Wikipedia, kindness is an important part of the community. You're welcome to disagree with other editors, but you should focus on being kind to people. If you think the page needs to be fixed, then fix it. Be nice to editors and don't troll them on the talk page. Lastly, if someone reverts your edits, try engaging in conversation before engaging in a revert war. Competence is required on this project which means you understand and follow our rules. Operator873 connect 20:17, 25 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Of course, you was trying to save your face not because of me (I am not so important) but because of somebody else. After all, our discussion is public.
  • Is the article french kiss worth anything? I do not think that pointing out errors is an act of trolling. If I were the author of that article I would be grateful to anyone who made such an "unkind" post because I could learn something.
  • Eventually I have come to realize that being a Wikipedia editor makes no sense to me. I have much to say but not necessarily here, because I need more freedom.
So, am I quitting? Maybe, but who cares? :-) Anyway, thank you for your response. 85.193.215.210 (talk) 00:33, 26 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to organize Feminism and Folklore 2023[change source]

Please help translate to your language

Dear Operator873/Archive 11,

Christmas Greetings and a Happy New Year 2023,

You are humbly invited to organize the Feminism and Folklore 2023 writing competition from February 1, 2023, to March 31, 2023. This year, Feminism and Folklore will focus on feminism, women's issues, and gender-focused topics for the project, with a Wiki Loves Folklore gender gap focus and a folk culture theme on Wikipedia.

You can help Wikipedia's coverage of folklore from your area by writing or improving articles about things like folk festivals, folk dances, folk music, women and queer folklore figures, folk game athletes, women in mythology, women warriors in folklore, witches and witch hunting, fairy tales, and more. Users can help create new articles, expand or translate from a list of suggested articles.

Organisers are requested to work on the following action items to sign up their communities for the project:

  1. Create a page for the contest on the local wiki.
  2. Set up a fountain tool or dashboard.
  3. Create the local list and mention the timeline and local and international prizes.
  4. Request local admins for site notice.
  5. Link the local page and the fountain/dashboard link on the meta project page.

This year we would be supporting the community's financial aid for Internet and childcare support. This would be provided for the local team including their jury and coordinator team. This support is opt-in and non mandatory. Kindly fill in this Google form and mark a mail to support@wikilovesfolklore.org with the subject line starting as [Stipend] Name or Username/Language. The last date to sign up for internet and childcare aid from our team is 20th of January 2023, We encourage the language coordinators to sign up their community on this link by the 25th of January 2023.

Hello, could you restore the article, I was just alluding to the independent sources. GeogieTax (talk) 02:01, 4 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@GeogieTax: Absolutely not. You CANNOT copy/paste words from other places into the article. If I restored and removed all the copyright issues, there would hardly be anything left which is why I had to delete the article. Start again and do not copy. Operator873 connect 02:05, 4 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It is noticeable that you did not even read the article on the snake recently discovered in Central America, I will explain the snake is called Simon irmelindicaprioae and I was just adding independent sources for the next read so that it will not be difficult for you to understand it. GeogieTax (talk) 02:10, 4 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@GeogieTax: I'm not doubting the fact there is a snake discovered and has sources. The problem is you copied sentences from those articles into the page you wrote. You can't copy. You have to write it in your own words using simple English. Copyright violations are very serious on Wikipedia and will result in your editing privileges being blocked. Operator873 connect 02:13, 4 February 2023 (UTC).[reply]
Readeeee.
Sibon irmelindicaprioae was discovered by the Ecuadorian biologist Alejandro Arteaga and the Panamanian biologist Abel Batista in 2023. Sibon noalamina belongs to the Sibon family and the Dipsadidae family. --GeogieTax (talk) 02:14, 4 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
since when discovering a species of animal means copying and pasting, perhaps Wikipedia does not document reptile species. --GeogieTax (talk) 02:16, 4 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

┌───────────────────┘
@GeogieTax:Have you read WP:COPYVIO yet? You should probably look at WP:CIR as well. Operator873 connect 02:17, 4 February 2023 (UTC) Rattlesnake it is a kind of animal, its wiki page comes from many sources of authors and biologists. GeogieTax (talk) 02:19, 4 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I am sure that if I create that article on Wikipedia in English, they will leave it to me because Sibon irmelindicaprioae is a recently discovered species of reptile. See you on the other Wikipedia that does not censor. GeogieTax (talk) 02:22, 4 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@GeogieTax: Copyright violations are not allowed on any wiki but good luck! Operator873 connect 02:24, 4 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Well, if that were the case, the Mcdonalds article would not exist because all its writing is promotional and it also has a copyright violation because its biography partly comes from its website I don't understand you, this is a simple language Wikipedia, because this is precisely the one that censors the most. I come from creating a musical article, I had no problems because now I have problems for creating an article about a recently discovered snake that little by little would be built with many independent sources but I couldn't because you didn't even let me fix it, due to your closed decision and without consultation.GeogieTax (talk) 02:30, 4 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright violations aren't up for discussion. Have you read WP:COPYVIO yet? I'll also point out that English Wikipedia has blocked you previously for edit warring, attacking other editors, and other issues. This isn't new news to you, you just don't want to follow the rules. Operator873 connect 02:32, 4 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I'm adjusting to your rule, I'll just tell you why you don't want an article on a new species of snake not to exist on Wikipedia in simple English, perhaps in this Wikipedia, there can't be more biology articles on a topic that is very forgotten and neglected, perhaps that article he was creating could be the object of study for any student in the world. I see that the articles on animals and species are not here much, tell me?. GeogieTax (talk) 02:39, 4 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@GeogieTax: I don't know how else to say this....
  1. I want the article
  2. I do NOT want it copied from a news source
  3. I do want it written in simple English
  4. You broke the rules by copying sentences from the jpost and other site and pasting it like you wrote it.

You need to also read WP:CIR as well because your ability to understand and follow the rules here is becoming a concern as well. Operator873 connect 02:42, 4 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It's okay, I won't break the rule of the century again, I hope that scientists don't discover more species of snakes, and so you don't worry anymore, tell me something, are you ignoring my question? Are you not interested in Biology topics? Tell me?. GeogieTax (talk) 02:49, 4 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@GeogieTax: I answered quite clearly. I'm done hashing this out and repeating myself since you are ignoring my answers. You can choose to follow the rules here or you can choose to continue down your current path which will probably result in a block. Your call. Have fun and good luck. Operator873 connect 02:52, 4 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Good luck, my friend, I hope that this article on the new species of snake Simon irmelindicaprioae came to exist, I do like biology, I like young people to learn something about this wonderful world, I can also create it on Wikipedia in English. bye GeogieTax (talk) 02:58, 4 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, my friend, with good luck, i was creating the article on the new species of snake on Wikipedia in English, I ask you the question again because I cannot create it on Wikipedia in simple English, if the article does not violate the copyright of any site, it is an information page on entomological biology. GeogieTax (talk) 03:41, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@GeogieTax: I'm glad you were able to create an article without plagiarizing by violating copyright rules. It seems you wrote your own words instead of copying them. Well done following Wikipedia rules. You could create the same article here, so long as you use simple English. Operator873 connect 03:48, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
the article here was in development, when you have doubts about the inaccuracy of an article, the first thing you do is raise the situation with the creator and then proceed to announce the possible deletion, but delete the article who barely developed it without consensus is an arbitrary action and little courtesy with new users. GeogieTax (talk) 04:04, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@GeogieTax: Unfortunately, with blatant copyright violations, no. The article must be deleted. You clearly still haven't read that yet. You cannot copy someone else's work on to a page here. You must rewrite it before saving/creating the page. Again, you seem to be unable or unwilling to understand and follow the rules which leads to concerns about your competency. Operator873 connect 04:45, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I am not going to argue with you, but what part of my article is a violation of copyright, perhaps Wikipedia is not governed by works from other websites, previous examples such as that of the McDonalds fast food chain, which has many excerpts from au Website, and from sources close to the restaurant. I think that you are letting yourself be carried away by your personal criteria and you are not emphasizing the importance of these articles. I'm telling you yesterday here in this Wikipedia that biological articles are needed. GeogieTax (talk) 04:56, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@GeogieTax: Thank you for confirming you do not understand the rules here and do not intend to follow them. This shall serve as your final warning. If you violate the copyright rules here again, you'll be blocked. End of story. Operator873 connect 04:59, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
For now, I am not going to create this article here, but other items yes, I hope to have another opinion from other Wikipedians who know about the topic of notoriety. Bye GeogieTax (talk) 05:04, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
