Welcome to Simple English Wikipedia[change source]

Hi, Peterdownunder, welcome to Simple English Wikipedia! Thank you for your changes. If you need help, check out the Help section of Wikipedia, or leave a message on my talk page. Whenever leaving messages on talk pages, please remember to sign your name by typing four 'tildes' (like this: ~~~~); doing this makes your name and the date show up. Also, it helps if you write something in the box that says 'edit summary' whenever you change an article. Below are some useful links to make your time here simpler. Happy editing! I saw the article you just made entitled HMS Bounty. What you wrote was good, but it was supposed to be redirecting to Mutiny on the Bounty. Don't worry, I took all the information you found and added the to Mutiny on the Bounty. I hope you understand. Cheers --  AmericanEagle  02:36, 31 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think that you have been doing quite well. Things like that you'll pick on soon. But you are doing very good, so...

RE: Moving Titles[change source]

I see that it was fixed, but here is how you can change a page's title. Okay, at the very top on an article (right next to the "change this page" thing), is a tab that says "move". Hit the button (nothing will happen), then right in the page and reason (like "I made a spelling mistake"), and the page should be moved. Again, good job here. RE: Question about Infoboxes[change source]

Well, infoboxes may be found Here. But if you see on this, you can copy and paste the whole top infobox with its information. That's how I did it. So you can find the information yourself, or you are allowed to copy and paste the exact infobox from English's article on it. If you have further questions, just ask. Sorry about not answering quickly, I was off for awhile. Congrats on you Barnstars! Cheers --  AmericanEagle  18:01, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I had forgotten about that. You're welcome. If you have more questions, they're easily answerable. I asked so many when I started, and (I admit) still do. Cheers -- America alk 23:24, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: User_talk:RyanCross

I'll butt in here with the answer. Use {{BD|1837|1865|Hall, Ben}} for Ben Hall. This will give you the 1837 Births , 1865 deaths categories, and also sort it by surname. I have done that one, but the rest still need sorted. You can leave out the death date, but you still need to put in the | for example {{BD|1837||Hall, Ben}} If you need any more help, give me a shout! Kennedy (talk) 08:10, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, couldn't help myself, I have corrected the rest of them :) Kennedy (talk) 08:45, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bushrangers and dates[change source]

Hi - I saw your update of the page on Gilbert. Linking dates worries me a bit and the situation is changing at en:wikipedia. I have raised it at Wikipedia:Simple_talk#Should_dates_be_linked.3F - not specifically about the Gilbert article of course but more generally. You might like to have your say there. Regards --Matilda (talk) 10:07, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - you wrote My main goal is not dates however, but just trying to get some Australian content in simple format. I'll look forward to future cooperation - bushrangers, explorers, and a few important early people are what I'm trying to get done at the moment. I look forward too to contributing some Australian content. My interest is probably more on places than people but happy to help out wherever. I see that you use use the the simple Wikipedia everyday at work and therefor I would appreciate you could give any pointers for what the readers need and what is not apporpriate. If there any any topics your readers are looking for, I am happy to help with that in particular.

The dates issue was not pointed at you, it was because it is being discussed at en:wiki and it has bugged me for years - I like the links to be meaningful and the date links aren't usually. Regards --Matilda (talk) 21:12, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi I have been working on the article Oklahoma and I was wondering if you might like to read over it and make some changes if it needs simplifying. User:Matilda sent me your way because it said you use Simple for children with disabilities and you use it everyday. If you don't have the time its cool, Thanks--CPacker (talk) 05:33, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Readability of Ben Hall[change source]

Hi - I saw you added the readability figures for Ben Hall - Those are good figures to have :-) If we could just get Oklahoma there too! I think those statistics are by no means the be-all-and-end-all but they help those of us with quite a few years of education and English as our mother tongue to understand whether we have written something that is easy or hard ot understand. Sometimes things can't be made simpler, at least in an elegant way, or in fact the statistics mislead and it isn't that hard to read. Nevertheless I think they are a good indication to start off with. Regards Matilda (talk) 05:43, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the link to http://www.editcentral.com/gwt/com.editcentral.EC/EC.html - excellent, I really liked the amber and orange and all the statistics plus hte highlighting of difficult words - though I don't think "November" should qualify as difficult - it is just a silly machine after all. Still a useful machine.
I have nominated Ben Hall for review. I htink it is a good article and meets all the requirements but the process seems to be to draw it to the community's attention first. I think you have done a great job on it. Regards --Matilda (talk) 06:27, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I quickly deleted the page you just nominated for deletion as it didn't really need a debate. For articles that are obviously vandalism just put {{QD}} at the top. This puts the article in the category Quick Deletion requests and will get quickly get an administrators attention. For reference RfD is for deletions that may cause controversy, or that some may want kept. QD is for vandalism, test pages etc. Cheers FSM Noodly? 21:04, 5 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Welcome Message[change source]

Hello Peter, of course it is okay to use my welcome message. I wrote it as I seemed to be typing the same thing over and over again. I think it helps as it gives the user an idea how to write articles. I'm glad you like it :) Kennedy (talk) 11:14, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I notice you are making changes to it in your sandbox, could you update my template page once you are finished? I do like your updates for the stubs etc, and would also like to have the correct info. Thanks Kennedy (talk) 13:30, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I just noticed in some ways our backgrounds are similar - I work in education as well, although I only taught in high schools for a short time (did my pracs in 2007). Thinking of developing some resources here for science and maths, as some of the more advanced stuff needs work to make it comprehensible. I'm going to close the RfD as a keep as you will obviously be able to fix it. Might I suggest that you remove the unsimplified stuff to your sandbox and then move it back where it's done? It might be easier... I dunno!

Australia rollback edit[change source]

Please double check spelling from now on, please, when using rollback, in this case I think an "undo" would have been better.-- ChristianMan16 t c r 06:21, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Disregard the previous message cause after this, I have a better fix on the situation. I believe the IP was right in this case, we are Simple English Wikipedia and not everyone, especially Americans (in my case), won't know that word, I have reverted it.-- ChristianMan16 t c r 06:27, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Its free of redlinks, and I've adjusted the format a bit (no content, just the flow). Let me know if I can help out more. If you can expand it just a little, I think it can be a nice PGA. Synergy 02:42, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I just thought the same thing! I think it's a quality article. Well done Peter! It'll make Good Article in no time at all! Yotcmdr =talk to the commander= 10:32, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't really have any suggestions. It's better than the article on the english wikipedia already! (and nearly as good as the one on the german wikipedia which is a featured article there) All that needs doing is the red links (I can help on some of them if you'd like me too), even though there are only a few! Other from that I don't see any other problems with it, and it should be taken to Proposed Good Articles as soon as possible! Yotcmdr =talk to the commander= 10:51, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I've done all the red links. Yotcmdr =talk to the commander= 11:38, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Looking over a featured article on en (I'll be using King Vulture for this example) I found a few things you could add. A section on relationships/interaction with humans is pretty common, and a section for reproduction would be nice. Aside from that, there are only minor issues here and there (for VGA, so far it looks great for PGA). Synergy 18:36, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

btw: What do you think of the readability? I used the readability.info site and compared with the original it went down three whole years! fr33kman t - c 06:55, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The figures look good. Eptalon says this is just bean counting, but I think the figures give an indication of how well you are going on the simplification process. This website gives some good suggestions, I use it quite a bit [1]. This site [2] is a good one as well, it will even do random wiki pages! I usually cut and paste paragraphs and look at the suggestions. Good luck. --Peterdownunder (talk) 11:13, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for those tools. I'm a big one for readability. My firm belief on all wikis has always been (and will always be) that the needs of the reader outweigh the needs of the editor! fr33kman t - c 17:29, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting anomaly for you[change source]

I have a strange anomaly for you from www.readability.info.

Just for fun, I ran it against Magnetism twice. Once using the 1) direct article link Magnetism and then again using the 2) last dated link from the history February 15, 2009 00:38. Both links should be the exact same version, right?). Yet here are the results; 1) [3] and 2) [4]. The test using the direct link shows "school year 7" yet the last link from the history shows "below school year 5"?!? :-(

I'm stumped! I can't see any superfluous words from the direct link that aren't there in the history link. Any ideas? :) fr33kman t - c 17:28, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Checkuser required[change source]

Peter, I think we need another checkuser. You are often online when the current checkusers are not and I believe that you have the complete trust of the community. Therefore, I'd like to nominate you for checkuser (or I'd like you to pick someone you know better to do it [who nom's you is not important to me, just that you are nom'd]). Marjorly and Eptalon are both excellent admins, but we really could use a person who is respected and also lives in a totaly different time-zone. Would you take a little while and consider it? :) Thanks, yours! fr33kman t - c 02:53, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please delete the page Fatty? Thank you. For The Record (talk) 00:06, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Defining Simple[change source]

Peter, is there any sort of standard for readers with learning disabilities in Australia? How many words are set as goal in special programs? Do we have any reliable source for this? I'm asking because I took some American standards (Dolch's 220 Instand Words and Fry's 1000 Instant Words) for a "Simple" spellchecker I was compiling, and I'd like to know if these lists overlap with some source you have. Cheers, Lwyx (talk) 00:31, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Did you have a chance to check that wordlist? I'm uploading a fixed version for my "simpler" spellchecker (to make it more backwards-compatible with MySpell) and I'd like to include a reliable source for people with learning disabilities. Cheers, Lwyx (talk) 17:01, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I got the link and I'll check it sometime later.-- Meanwhile, I see that this is aimed at 3rd grade, but I'm not positive of whether this really helps. I thought we were aiming at a literacy level of 7th grade, on the 3000 word vocabulary. What really worries me is whether this reading level is fit to write and encyclopedia, or else if the 3000 word reading level is too high (or low, i.e. patronizing) towards people with learning disabilities. Does it make sense? Cheers, Lwyx (talk) 05:04, 5 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think 7th grade is a good target level. The Aussie 3rd grade list I would assume is probably included in the Basic 1500 list, but I haven't checked it yet, any extra words need to be in the Simple list. I agree with your concern about getting the balance right. We can get very close to writing an encyclopedia with the Combined List. Too many words and we are no longer simple. It is probably some of those words on Ogden's extra word lists that will help. Patronizing is probably more a writing style, not just a restricted word list. I have been using your basic word list spell checker, and that makes it so much easier, by quickly showing complex words I can either look for a simpler one or link it in someway. I suppose when we come up with a list we need to remove words that aren't necessary - that is there could be a simpler choice. Perhaps 2000-2500 is realistic. --Peterdownunder (talk) 09:09, 5 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You may have miss understood, but the template I used was not a qd tag. Take a look.-- † CM16 t c r 08:44, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The tag you're thinking of is {{Notable}}, which (again) I didn't use, I used {{Notability}}.-- † CM16 t c r 08:51, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I personally think I'm owed an apology now but I'm not gonna be snotty and demand it. We all make mistakes even ones were we don't check our facts first; God knows I'm guilty of that.-- † CM16 t c r 08:19, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You may be right - I did mistake the template you used, however I still stand by my first comments, if you have a problem with notability on a well written, referenced article, then an Rfd is still the best option. I now realize that people in the US may have no idea about what a Victoria Cross is, so I have tried to improve the opening paragraph. --Peterdownunder (talk) 08:33, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I understood what it is when the article said "highest military award", but that still doesn't make a person automatically notable, but when you added that extra info, that made him notable.-- † CM16 t c r 18:53, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Long versus complex[change source]

At the top of New changes, I think the Long pages link next to Simplification should be removed and use Complex pages rather than long as the examples shown. Ok, that makes sense to me - I would be happy for you to complete the process as you did bring up the article for deletion. I don't have a view on its notability myself - well I probably think that all articles on computer games are non notable, but I'm old. The only reason I changed it from the QD was that there was quite a history on the page so some editors must have thought it notable to keep working on it, so it seems reasonable to discuss it before making a decision.--Peterdownunder (talk) 11:02, 5 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've closed down the icon discussion due to disruption of the project and said we'll pick it up again in two weeks, and we've a new guideline at WP:CW. Hope all is good with you. How is Oz? Haven't heard a darned thing about the fires (guess media here doesn't care anymore). Cheers fr33kman talk 05:53, 27 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, any IP that adds "Good site, admin" to a page is a spambot/open-proxy. Feel free to hard-block for 1 month or more. I've been blocking them all night fr33kman talk 06:39, 27 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I mentioned you...[change source]

Hi Peter, I mentioned you in this discussion. Nothing to worry about, just needed to use one of your articles as an example. I wanted to let you know. All the best. The Rambling Man (talk) 10:08, 29 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, could you please place an opinion on this? It needs more input. Majorly talk 00:21, 2 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Replied[change source]

Hello, I replied on my talk page, regarding your question. Very basically: Many IP editors (probably mostly vandalism), the bot edit looks like the last known good version. Note: I have semi-portected the article for a month, follwing the many IP editors (most of which are probably vandalism). --Eptalon (talk) 10:07, 2 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Peter. Thanks for participating in my RFB which passed (on the early side) yesterday, 16/5. While you opposed my promotion, I still hope to serve you as well as I can in my capacity as a 'crat, and admin, but foremost fellow editor. All the best. The Rambling Man (talk) 10:45, 3 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations on the vote, as you know my oppose was not based on your ability or capacity, and I think you will do a great job. I look forward to working with you in your new role, and as you said, as a fellow editor. Let's see what we can do to keep up the standards and move this project forward. --Peterdownunder (talk) 11:12, 3 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
