Categories layout

In the general layout of articles, (non-category) templates come before Categories and Interwiki links. {{Stub}} comes before categories. -- Creol(talk) 01:36, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I still believe that it messes up the Categories listed at the bottom of the screen. It is much easier to have the categories before the stub, but if you insist, I shall stop. -Razorflame (contributions) Talk 01:39, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I ran your Swiss towns articles through AWB. AWB automatically put {{stub}} after other templates, before categories, and puts the interwiki links into alphabetical order. If you don't, then anyone making changes using the AWB editor will change them anyway. -- Barliner  talk  17:02, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Peer review

Thank you for the review. If I have time, I'll try to go back and finish up those articles by filling in the redlinks. And also as a little reminder, can you please don't edit an article while I am working at it. Because we always end up in an edit conflict which sometimes get me a little frustrated. But other than that, thank you:) --§ Snake311 (T + C) 01:49, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I will try to remember that in the future. -Razorflame (contributions) Talk 01:50, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, thank you for reminding me. But I am kinda busy right now, so I may not be able to constantly send back messages;) --§ Snake311 (T + C) 01:54, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have finished with all three Melissa, Ingrid, and Jerry storm articles. Also thanks for reminding me about the {{inuse}} template:) --§ Snake311 (T + C) 03:20, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, not a problem. Without that template in place, I would've edited the article as soon as it was put up.  :) -Razorflame (contributions) Talk 16:03, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Numbers

If you will note, the RfD was closed after only 2 days with no input from any of the administrators and only a handful of comments from other users (only 1 long term user comments). Previous RfDs on numbers resulted in deletion due to them not being more than dictionary definitions. Whether all Wikipedia's believe they are needed or not (they are not on the list of Articles each wiki should have), the article must be more than a dictionary definition. Simple wikipedia is not a dictionary. A cleaned up shiny dictionary definition is still a dictionary definition. Also, on most of the pages you have included the link to SE:wiktionary although many of the articles have no SE:Wikt articles. As written, nearly all number articles are subject to deletion per this and this. Changes to this policy should be brought up on Simple talk to find if there is consensus for change. -- Creol(talk) 03:12, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

And as per the most recent RfD, Huji withdrew his request to have them deleted because of the fact that they were pages that most encyclopedias should have. All of the pages linked to the English Wikipedia have pages on the English Wikipedia, so therefore, they should exist here. -Razorflame (contributions) Talk 15:42, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I would disagree that mere appearance on ENWP mandates an appearance in SEWP-- Barliner  talk  18:45, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Those aren't the only wikis that the numbers pages appear on. They also appear on about 15 other languages. So why should we be the odd one out? -Razorflame (contributions) Talk 21:21, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
To make it clear: I withdraw my request for deletion of some of the number pages (I didn't reuest deletion of the rest of them) because I noticed some people are working on the pages I RfD'ed in a way which makes them more than a dictionary definition. I may or may not request deletion for the same pages or for other number pages, if I find them nothing more than dictionary definitions after a while. - Huji reply 21:33, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have worked hard to make them not look like dictionary definitions. I am still working on them, but I am struggling to come up with any more information to put onto them. -Razorflame (contributions) Talk 21:35, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, this is neither a topic in which I know much nor one I'm interested in, so I can't help you with the number articles. You may want to check and see what other Wikipedias present in such articles and get ideas for our Wikipedia. Keep up the good work :) - Huji reply 21:40, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have looked at the English Wikipedia, and have found nothing simple enough to add to the articles. I am pretty sure that adding what numbers they are divisible by and stuff like that is simple enough for this website, while making it not be a dictionary definition, but if you don't think that is the case, then I will be happy to try to scrounge up more information to add to them in the future, because I am currently working on getting the municipalities for Nidwalden complete. -Razorflame (contributions) Talk 21:42, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The idea of devisible numbers is good. For "some" numbers, some facts can be added (like cultural facts about "3" and "7" and "9"). Wikis other than English Wikipedia may help too. - Huji reply 21:47, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, I do not know any other languages but English, so that makes it incredibly hard to read what the other wikis are saying :) -Razorflame (contributions) Talk 21:49, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cats and IW in user namespace

I'm sure you'll notice I've gone through all the pages you are in the process of simplifying in your namespace and hidden the categories and interwiki. There are 2 reasons for this:

  1. If the category exists, the page will be listed in the category even the article is not yet a "real" article.
  2. If the category doesn't exist yet, it will be listed on Special:Wantedcategories and make it seem like there is a need for the category when there isn't just yet.

In the future, could you please make sure to hide these until you are ready to put them in the mainspace? Thank you. · Tygrrr·talk· 15:14, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I will make sure to do this in the future. I was actually going to go through and delete them all for the moment, but I guess that that was a better solution. -Razorflame (contributions) Talk 15:42, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your siggy

I use firefox, not IE, so your siggy is just an ordinary purple colour. Instead of brightred why not use red as the colour, this shows up in more browsers. It is the colour I use.-- Barliner  talk  17:06, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Have you seen the canges I made to Dresden Univ. I think this is simple enough.

What do your use on vandal patrol, what about IRC? -- Barliner  talk  17:37, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have all of the substitutions for warning users memorized in my head, and I just go to their talk page, and type in the substitution for the warning level that I want to give them. As for IRC, I have no program that I can use to get onto IRC from school (which is where I am currently editing from), and therefore, have no interest in going onto IRC. -Razorflame (contributions) Talk 17:39, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I only use the simple wiki channel on IRC as it lists nearly all new changes as they happen. I got code from another editor to change my monobook.js so that the warning templates are in the sidebar. I just click on the appropriate one and put the page that was vandalised in the pop-up box.-- Barliner  talk  17:45, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You have my permission to copy just that part of your monobook.js and past it into my monobook.js if you would like. -Razorflame (contributions) Talk 17:46, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can I ask why you warned this editor? For which contribriution? -- Barliner  talk  15:59, 6 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, meant to use test3a instead of test 3 :) I warned him for the stream edit that I was undoing at the same time as you. Meant to type in test3a instead of test3 :) -Razorflame (contributions) Talk 16:00, 6 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The only contribution by that IP was patent nonsense and should have been marked QD. That is why I deleted it immediately. I do not think you could have reverted the entry before issuing a warning.-- Barliner  talk  16:07, 6 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about that then. My mistake :) -Razorflame (contributions) Talk 16:16, 6 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Images

Fair use images can't be uploaded to commons, we may allow some images per fair use (Germany Wikipedia allows logos only!)..--OsamaK 10:47, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
And you think I don't already know that? -Razorflame (contributions) Talk 15:39, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, Sure you know. but a encyclopedia without images (fair use ones) isn't really good!--OsamaK 16:52, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That's what the Commons and the English Wikipedia are for :) -Razorflame (contributions) Talk 17:02, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

An encyclopoedia doesn't need images, but any that appear on SEWP are free for all to use, so that those whose english is not so good for any reason do not need to worry about the complexities of image licences. -- Barliner  talk  17:01, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

User talk:163.150.237.63

If you want to leave a message like you did to User talk:163.150.237.63 can I suggest you say which article it refers to, this would remind the user about the context of the change. As this was an IP address rather than a registered user it may not be seen again, but if the tone is friendlier it may encourage the user to become a registered/regular editor- -- Barliner  talk  15:52, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, sorry if that sounded blunt. I will fix it right away :) -Razorflame (contributions) Talk 15:52, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bischofszell

Hello, It is good you care about the canton of Thurgau; Thurgau is the canton without cities, the biggest ones are Frauenfeld (22.5k), Kreuzlingen (17.5k, next to Konstanz, in Germany); Arbon (14k, on Lake Constance); Amriswil (12k); Weinfelden (shortly under 10k) and Romanshorn (9k). In all of that, Bischofszell, with its 5k is among the smaller communities. The local industry is Bischofszell Konserven (now belonging to Migros, makes jams, fruit juices, various cans, convenience food, among them Anna's Best)). While we have the artricle, look on Commons for some images. --Eptalon 22:51, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bern City and Cat:Municipalities of Bern, so I suggested changed from "Cat:Berne to Cat:Bern to keep all spellings the same -- Barliner  talk  00:19, 9 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Empty cats

It is best not to create empty cats. Your request to keep them might be missed and they end up being deleted. Best to wait until you have one or two entries to put in. (As I have been told myself :))-- Barliner  talk  00:38, 9 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

numbers in columns

Municipalities (aka Cities)

Hello Razorflame; When I talk about municipalities, I think of notability. Here are some things that makes a municipality notable, in my opinion:

  • People have lived there, for at least 300 years
  • The place had city rights, in the Middle Ages
  • Some important historical event happened at or near the place.
  • At the moment, the place is important, either because of history, or because many people live there.

Put it in other words: If you are able to fill about half a screen with telling things about the place, which are not, that the place is next to A, B, C, and D; that is that many kilometers away from E, then the place is probably worth a mention of its own. Otherwise, group similar places into the district; if that is not enough, continue group things together, until you get "stubs" of at least like half a screen (potential article about 2.5k in size). Personally, I would start with one page per district; and when you see that the entry of a certain city starts growing move it out to its own page. --Eptalon 02:46, 9 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The reason I asked this is mainly because of the fact that the English Wikipedia along with 7-8 other sites have the same article in their database. Don't you want a lot of articles on this site? Wouldn't you think that the more articles a site has, the better? Also, every time I try to get an infobox from the English Wikipedia over here, it doesn't work. Could you help me make them work? -Razorflame (contributions) Talk 02:50, 9 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tell me which infobox, I will help.
as for articles. I would far rather a fewer number of good articles than hundreds of stubs with little meaningful information. -- Barliner  talk  02:53, 9 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The infoboxes that are on English Wikipedia that contain information about the municipality that the page is about. If you could help me get those working, then I could add those to the pages about the municipalities and then they would be great additions to this site. -Razorflame (contributions) Talk 02:56, 9 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What about hundreds of stubs that actually inform users on what a certain city is, as well as the location of that certain city. Also, if you create those stubs, wouldn't that give people more options for helping to expand each of them? -Razorflame (contributions) Talk 02:55, 9 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think it is not about the number of articles, it is about their quality. If there is little to say about a number of places, they can be grouped. As to the infobox. These are templates. If you copy over the infobox from enWP, you laso need to copy all the templates it depends on. Some templates like coord need many other templates; they are nearly impossible to get here. What templates did you think about? --Eptalon 02:57, 9 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I got the infobox to work. It was the Template:Infobox Swiss town that needed to be created. I created it. -Razorflame (contributions) Talk 03:09, 9 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Changing User pages

Most users do not like their page being changed by other users (except to revert vandalism). I have therefore reverted your change to User:Netoholic's page. --Eptalon 03:00, 9 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ok. Sorry about that. -Razorflame (contributions) Talk 03:01, 9 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Template: Infobox Swiss town

I got the template working fine now. I also added the nocategory option (|nocategory=1) so the built-in category can be turned off in cases where the article is already in a subcategory of the one used by the template. The template now has a blank copy of all its feilds listed on its page which should work fine. Let me know if there are any other problems with the template.-- Creol(talk) 03:51, 9 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the help Creol :). That was the missing link that needed to be added to my municipality pages to make them more encyclopaedic so that they would be appreciated on this here site. -Razorflame (contributions) Talk 03:52, 9 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
