Wiki-tips[change source]

I also noticed you added the helpme template to your sandbox page. What do you need help with exactly? George Edward CTalkContributions 17:07, 9 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you George Edward CTalkContributions for your warm welcome! I've been setting up Sandbox pages and Drafts of articles derived from en.Wikipedia which may need review, comment, and discussion before moving to mainspace. I just wanted to touch base with people who could guide me through the process. Also, how do I identify administrators? Stmullin (talk) 17:42, 9 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I think that I found the instructions for moving articles here [4]Stmullin (talk 04:02, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

To answer your first question, you can see a list of administrators here (or alternatively you can chose to highlight them in your preferences, look under Interface Gadgets). We don't generally require articles to be submitted in that fashion here (like EnWiki does with AFC). Editors can still collaborate on drafts though, just not in a specific namespace. Regardless, I'll look at your drafts and leave some suggestions if neccessary. As for transfering articles from EnWiki, you may want to look at the following pages: How to write pages in Simple English, How to copy from another Wikipedia. Regards, George Edward CTalkContributions 16:35, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like the Administrators have been here a long time! That is encouraging.Smlombardi (talk) 00:41, 11 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Was Usertalk:Smlombardi/Archive1 meant to be in the User_talk: namespace? If so, I'll move it for you. George Edward CTalkContributions 19:00, 12 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I followed the instructions for a simple archive and am not certain if the resulting pages are where they need to be . . . so, yes please, if the pages are in the wrong place , I need help putting them in the correct place. Thank you again!Smlombardi (talk) 19:09, 12 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Done - There's kind of a dilema with Talk:Usertalk:Smlombardi/Archive1, as I've already created User_talk:Smlombardi/Archive1. Go to Special:MovePage, and move it to either Special:MyPage/insertnamehere or to Special:MyTalk/insertnamehere.
I've moved everything to the new page . . . can the blank pages be deleted? Smlombardi (talk) 22:40, 12 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Draft to Mainspace[change source]

I think that the Malcolm Knowles article is ready for Mainspace. Do I move it or should an administrator move it?Smlombardi (talk) 14:49, 16 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Any comments or edits are welcome! Smlombardi (talk) 14:00, 17 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A belated Thank You for moving the Malcolm Knowles article to mainspace. Our system was down due to an IP address conflict so I am just now able to post. Will the draft page be deleted automatically? Should I create the next article in my sandbox or in draft space?Smlombardi (talk) 17:22, 19 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome. The draft page was deleted when I did the move. You can create your next article in your userspace/sandbox or in mainspace, depending on how much you want to work on it before making the main article. When you create it, let me know if you would like me (or anyone else) to comment on it like I did before. --Auntof6 (talk) 18:35, 19 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I thought that I would work on self-directed learning here [[5]]to pick up the redline from the Malcolm Knowles article. I believe that the sandbox may be my best choice for a draft since this is a new article (not taken from En.Wikipedia) and will need refinement before moving to mainspace. I think the Malcolm Knowles article is much improved from your comments and edits . . . so an emphatic yes about improving the articles before they are moved to mainspace. Smlombardi (talk) 18:56, 19 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. To help with writing simple language, you might like to look at Wikipedia:Basic English combined wordlist. As much as possible, we try to use only the words in that list, especially the ones listed as basic. When we need to use words that aren't in that list, we can either link them (if there is an article for the concept) or explain them.
Let me know how else I can help. --Auntof6 (talk) 19:50, 19 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Has anyone designed a BOT to make Wikipedia:Basic English combined wordlist easier to use? Smlombardi (talk) 16:01, 31 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure how a bot could help. I have heard of an add-on for Firefox that can help check an article. I haven't looked at that add-on, though, so I'm not sure exactly what it does. --Auntof6 (talk) 17:45, 31 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
There is a utility at http://www.online-utility.org/english/readability_test_and_improve.jsp , which helps but it does not restrict the vocabulary to the Wikipedia:Basic English combined wordlist. Thanks for your help with the Wikipedia:Basic English combined wordlist . . . I'll need to review that list repeatedly and edit each of my articles because it is difficult to write using the limited vocabulary. I admire those of you who have placed emphasis on communicating with everyone. Ultimately, I believe that using the simplified vocabulary will minimize disagreement and increase understanding.
