Vinyl acetate

From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vinyl acetate is an organic compound with the chemical formula CH3CO2CH=CH2. Vinyl acetate is a monomer used to make polyvinyl acetate, a vinyl polymer used in glue.

Preparation

[change | change source]

Vinyl acetate is formally the ester of acetic acid and vinyl alcohol, but is not normally made from these chemicals because vinyl alcohol is very unstable compared to its tautomer acetaldehyde. While it is possible to make vinyl acetate from acetaldehyde and acetic anhydride, most production uses ethylene and acetic acid instead. Another way is to remove a molecule of acetic acid from ethylidene diacetate.[1]
