Viss

Viss is a village in Sárospatak District of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County. Its population in 2024 was 443.

The village is located between Olaszliszka, Kenézlő and Zalkod.

The village was first mentioned in 1239. In 1410, it was a customs place with water and land tolls. Until the mid-15th century, the Upor, Ujfalusy, and Óbégányi families owned it, and it was part of Zemplén County. By the end of the 15th century, the Buttkay, Márky, and Ráskay families also had land here. In the early 16th century, it was belonged to the Farkas family. In 1885, a big fire almost completely burned down Viss.

In 2022, 88.2% of the population identified as Hungarian, 7% as Gypsy, 1.1% as German, 0.4% as Ukrainian, 0.4% as Slovak, 0.2% as Armenian, 2.2% as other non-Hungarian (11.6% did not declare; due to dual identities, the total may be higher than 100%). In terms of religion, 28.8% were Roman Catholic, 13.3% Reformed, 16.4% Greek Catholic, 7.6% non-denominational (33.6% did not respond).[1]
