West Indies women's cricket team
The West Indies women's cricket team, known as West Indies Women (WIW), is organised by the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), which is a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC). The team has played international matches since 1976. They won the 2016 ICC Women's World Twenty20, and were runners-up in the 2013 ICC Women's Cricket World Cup.
Origin and organisation
[change | change source]The team can trace its origin to 25 May 1973, when the Caribbean Women’s Cricket Federation (CWCF) was founded. The first edition of the ICC Women's World Cup was held in England that year, but no West Indies Women team had yet been created. However, both Jamaica Women and Trinidad and Tobago Women took part. WIW played their first Test match in 1976, and their first One Day International (ODI) in 1979.[1]
The team was directly affected by administrative developments between 1998 and 2005. First, in 1998, the CWCF became the West Indies Women’s Cricket Federation (WIWCF). In January 2004, the WIWCF merged with the WICB. Finally, in 2005, the International Women's Cricket Council (IWCC) merged with the ICC.
Test cricket
[change | change source]As of September 2025, WIW have played a total of twelve Test matches. Eight of them were in 1976, and another three in 1979. Since then, as with all women's international teams, the focus has been on ODIs and, since 2008, Twenty20 Internationals (T20I). WIW played one further Test in March 2004.[2]
