Automated translation software

i have been looking for information on automating en.wiki translation to simple.wikipedia. cant find anything. i'm sure its been considered, can someone point me to information about this? there is this, http://www.online-utility.org/english/simple_basic_helper.jsp but it ruins links. thanks Spencerk (talk) 02:33, 8 June 2008 (UTC) wrong linkSpencerk (talk) 00:07, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

I moved it here, from the administrator's noticeboard; It does not really involve admins only...--Eptalon (talk) 10:33, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
I have access to Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition, but I only know a little about programming, so probably about all I could make would be something that highlights words that are not Simple English. If someone has any ideas, you could send me the source code and I could compile it, if you want. J.delanoy talkchanges 14:25, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

thanks Eptalon, yes exactly! this highlights words that arent simple[1] i emailed the guy who made it about formatting non-simple words to wikt:word, which would be huge. I'm sure someone has done this before. this is crazy though because i cant find anything. also, getting an app like this to replace common non-simple words to simple words would be one hop away. any thoughts anyone? The Holocaust vs Holocaust

I notice that all or almost all the links to the term holocaust intend to link to The Holocaust, and likely many future links will do the same. EN has for most of the past few years redirected Holocaust to The Holocaust, with a hatnote at the top of the latter to Holocaust (disambiguation).

Should Simple do something like that too? TransUtopian (talk) 17:29, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

I dont think so. At least in German the word is neutral in the sense that if you talk about a holocaust the meaning is that something was fully consumed (sacrificed) through burning/fire. There have been plenty of other genocides the word in its modern meaning could be applied to. It was originally used for the Book Moses 1, 22; this describes how Isaac is finally not sacrified by Abraham. If we wanted to redirect holocaust somewhere, we should likely target it at genocide.--Eptalon (talk) 21:56, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
I understand it has multiple meanings/contexts (w:Holocaust (disambiguation)), but I'm concerned that all links refer to the Nazi-caused holocaust (more links than to The Holocaust). Most people add brackets after "the".
I was going to move the brackets on the various articles, but thought there might be an automated way to do it. Then I realized it'd be more efficient to create a dab page with this content and redirect the incoming links to the intended target in one go. But I decided to ask here for consensus. TransUtopian (talk) 23:42, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
Anyone else have an opinion (or Eptalon if you have a response to my last)? I don't want to move it and create a redirect at Holocaust just to have it reverted, nor relink a lot of links if no one cares or has a better idea. TransUtopian (talk) 18:02, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi there! Just wanted to let everyone here know that we, the people at the Battlstar Wiki, were inspired by the Simple English Wikipedia and are starting one up. The Simple English Battletar Wiki is here. If anyone is interested in helping us—whether by giving us suggestions, helping write articles, and other work—that'd be great. Contributors can even dual-license their contributions. :) -- Joe Beaudoin Jr. (talk) 04:14, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Interesting... talk about not assuming good faith. If you guys (or gals?) want, please remove this section as the only reason I posted here is that I'm not sure where (on this Wikipedia anyway) I can go for help regarding the above. I thought some of you would be open minded to the prospect, particularly BSG fans. Clearly, I am in error. Sorry to bother everyone. Won't contribute here again. -- Joe Beaudoin Jr. (talk) 20:33, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
You lot didn't just bite the newcomer, you impaled him with pointed sticks and ran him out of town... --Gwib -(talk)- 20:44, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
I'd like to voice in favor of this as well. While it is an advertisement/request, as far as I know Simple English wiki projects are not numerous, this is the largest such project, and Simple English is I think more unique than requesting help from Spanish or French-speaking BSG fans. I certainly don't have the knack yet for writing and rewriting in Simple. TransUtopian (talk) 21:05, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Well, I don't think I was very agressive. I was just asking a question. IS it okay? Prime Contributer (talk) 07:26, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

As long as it doesn't start a floodgate of similar requests, which I seriously doubt, I think it's a reasonable note for the reasons I mentioned. Granted, I'm a newbie here, though I think a polite Hello, thank you, though these are my concerns might have been better received.
Also, are there online simple english communities besides this one or resources that might help those with an interest in BSG but not a good grasp of writing in Simple English? I read WP:HOW and Help:Examples of simpler English, but that's more of an outline than tips and tricks of how to think in Simple English. TransUtopian (talk) 17:55, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Edit counting

I noticed when I created an "This User Has Contributed Over 2400 Times To The Simple Wikipedia!" UBX that some other editor followed suit. At this Template/Userbox page, I have made it so any user can update their own edit count accordingly. I have linked to this edit count site, it includes deleted edits, so QD's and such will be counted. This is just a notice that any user who wants this on their page may now do so. Cheers --  AmericanEagle  21:54, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Someone Played a Prank

Under Simple English Wikipedia on the left side panel, it says "getting around." I doubt it should actually say that. Could the proper person with permission please fix it?

SmartSimpleMind (talk) 03:10, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Actually, as far as I can remember (a week? :), it's said that, and seems a reasonable SE version of Navigation. Then again, I'm not an admin, and have only been here about a week, so I could be wrong. Regardless, what do you think it should say? TransUtopian (talk) 04:54, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
It was changed back in April 2006 because Navigation is not Simple. -- Creol(talk) 05:34, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Doppelganger account

I was considering making a doppelganger account for myself under the name "The Wolf", as I use that for my signature (since "Schlechter Wolf" is a little long) and would like to avoid being impersonated or such. However, the username "The Wolf" is taken. User:The Wolf has only three edits, made to the User and User Talk categories, and has not edited since April of 2007. Would it be possible to create a secondary account and then use that secondary account to usurp The Wolf's username? TheWolf 14:24, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Please consider making this request at WP:CHU. Cheers, Razorflame 14:25, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
As it was a vandal account that probably doesn't care all that much about the licensing attribution of his trolling, I'd be OK to do that for you. Are you sure you wouldn't like your current username changed to The Wolf, rather than creating a second account? Archer7 - talk 15:24, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
Yes, quite. I find "Schlechter Wolf" to be a lot more interesting than "The Wolf"; I only would like to make a doppelganger under that name to avoid any confusion due to my sig. I'll create the secondary account and move the request to CHU. Thanks. TheWolf 19:55, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

may this german native speaker here be a smartass. "Schlechter Wolf" sounds not "good" in german if you have choosen that username due to reading of the Brother Grimm story, consider using "Böser" instead. "Schlecht" while also translateable as "bad" is more used in conjunction with "pale" as for example in "Der Fisch ist wohl schon schlecht, der riecht so komisch"

Look Out! - There's a Bear in the Window!

Its name is This, That, and It. I would hope these types of... "conflicts," aren't common. Just looking at some talk page archives, you will find more. I have only been editing here for a several weeks or so, but I've made some good friends. Because of my personality (and Christian background), I am not one who will get into arguments. So "not to be a nudge..." ( - Riley Poole), but this kind or arguments won't end well. I'd think that Admin's, especially, would just "move on" more. So may we please get along better, we can't afford to lose more good editors over tedious things. Cheers --  AmericanEagle  23:42, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

The reason I am only sporadically active here is because the behaviour of some of the admins here is really unpleasant to say the least. I most edit on en.wiki, which is not famed for having the nicest of atmospheres, but it's so large I can avoid people I conflict with easily. It is difficult on a wiki as small as this when certain editors seem to find it enjoyable to be rude and sarcastic to good faith editors for no apparent reason. I find it hard not to question why they do what they do. Since these editors are the most powerful on this wiki, there's nothing anyone can do about it but sit back and let it happen. Since this comment is about me, maybe it's best I leave. Majorly talk 23:52, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

DYK

May I suggest that we start a separate section for DYKs in the main page like English Wikipedia. This will help our project to grow in size. --Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 09:59, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

I recently submitted an article for DYK on En Wiki (it got featured!), and looking at the number of pages which get expanded every day; often 30+ articles get 7,000 bytes + added to them every day. We just aren't a big enough Wikipedia. --Gwib -(talk)- 13:35, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
So, in order to make it bigger, we have to let some users at the big Wikipedia know about this small one. I knew this wiki only through the interwiki link. Chenzw  Talk  13:37, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, but I don't think that the Simple English Wikipedia has enough active users to completely sustain such a project at this time. I am not saying that it might not be a problem in the future, but currently, I just don't think that we have the editor base to successfully get a DYK section to work on the Simple English Wikipedia. However, it might be a good thing if we did start a DYK, because it might convince more users to join the Simple English Wikipedia. But I have to agree with the other people above. We just don't have enough of an editor base at this time. Cheers, Razorflame 01:38, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
We can do updates every day, not every six hours. Secondly, I can easily make five or six decent new articles on various topics every day, or two. Maxim(talk) 01:40, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
Or maybe we can feature a good article on the Main Page instead. Maxim(talk) 01:41, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
That might not be a bad idea, Maxim. I think that that might work. We could substitute featuring a GA on the main page instead of a DYK until we get more of an editor base, and afterwords, we can move that section from GA's to DYK's. The only problem that I can forsee with this is the fact that it might be a bit redundant to feature both VGAs and GAs on the main page at the same time. I don't know, but let's wait and see what other people think...Razorflame 01:44, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
We can have something like this: User:Maxim/Sandbox. (Minus my poor formatting, and my terrible jokes... (I didn't know what to put there... :-( )) Maxim(talk) 01:58, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
Very interesting idea... I can see us putting perhaps an identical GA right below the VGA section, like we could either (1) shorten, or (2) make the "Knowledge Groups" go down in a line (rather than going over). I would support it if we could get it to fit. Some articles just can't be, or we don't have the editor time, improved some articles to VGA yet. That would eliminate that problem 'til we grow. Just a thought. --  AmericanEagle  02:01, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
I think a DYK section on the Main Page is exactly what the doctor ordered.--   ChristianMan16  02:55, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

RE: Wanted pages

Could we have this page updated somehow? It hasn't been updated in a year. --  AmericanEagle  18:37, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

This seems to be the best we have at the moment, sadly. Microchip 19:00, Friday, June 6 2008 (UTC)
Shouldn't that page update it's self?--   ChristianMan16  02:52, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
It was decided by the high up muckity mucks some time ago that the constant updating was too much of a drain on server activity. The large wikis were discontinued from updating but that was not enough so all wikis were stopped. Imagine tracing 5M-1.7G lists of links and trimming out all those that exist for every language wiki daily. That is a lot of effort for a single page. Our current updated list is over a month old due to a failure in the backup process during the May backups. Pretty much every wiki failed to fully backup during that pass. Currently we are the next in line for backing up being just finished backed up. A new list should be compiled (by hand..) in the next few days. -- Creol(talk) 03:20, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
Good enough for me.--   ChristianMan16  03:23, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
No pressure, I just thought you click "update" and it refreshes (or something like that). :) --  AmericanEagle  05:04, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
"Next few days" was a bit of an overstatement. The new list is up and accurate within a few hours. There is a huge increase in high requested articles created by templates for the communes of French districts (89-90 links each) as well as some other odd ones (for example Moons of Jupiter/Saturn we have somewhere, but the template is pointing to the wrong place.) There may be quite a few easy ones on there that can be cleaned up by a simple redirect. The current list is 14 links or more and accounts for just over 1000 articles needed. -- Creol(talk) 09:56, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

Oversight for Checkusers

Moved from Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard

Over on the English Wikipedia, every check user that I could see had oversight power. This means that they could completely hide an edit to make it seem like it really isn't there. This can be a useful tool for checkusers to have here (like hiding things that were courtesy blanked, and userpages and user talk pages of banned users. I would like to recommend to the community that we enable checkusers on here to be able to do that so that they can better protect the Simple English Wikipedia from copycats and mimics (people who see a banned user and wants to mimic them because they think it would be fun). I need community consensus first before we can move on with this. Cheers, Razorflame 20:24, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

Don't really think we need it. I thought it was only supposed to be used to hide personal information, death threats etc that really have to be removed, rather than just deleting revisions. Remember that admins can do selective restorations: deleting a page, then undeleting only the revisions they want. Oversight is (pretty much) permanent. so not really suitable for that. Archer7 - talk 20:43, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
That's is what I understood it to be. I just wanted to see if other users here thought that we really needed it on here. Guess not, so, cheers, Razorflame 20:44, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
I would support such a move, on the Mimic basis alone, but also for privacy issues (ie if someone adds to John Smith John Smith's phone number is 02736538, it can be removed from history compleatly. --  Da Punk '95  talk  20:55, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
Oversights are often needed here. Really bad revisions are removed by stewards. Checkusers should not necessarily be granted it though, if we do. They are two separate roles. Majorly talk 21:17, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
I Support it for the mimic thing too, as I have recently gone through such a thing on enWP.--   ChristianMan16  00:29, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
No! Oppose'!'. They are completely seperate roles, and anyway, I am a supporter of the "don't fix it if it 'ain't broken" philosophy. If you don't need it; don't change it... Oversight is not something that can be given out lightly. And shouldn't this be on WP:ST? Microchip 17:32, Friday, June 6 2008 Utc
Question: So what exactly do you oppose? Bringing oversight here? Or Bringing it here and giving it directly to CheckUsers?--   ChristianMan16  03:47, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

RE {{Orphan}} template

That template is really useless. I mean, most of our articles (except for the United States, Europe, etc.) are linked to. That's because only have less the 30,000 articles, with millions left to be created. All the template is doing is cluttering up the pages in gets put on. Thoughts? --  AmericanEagle  05:08, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

I say  Keep it, cause eventually it will be used and I think WP:PAPER from enWP would apply nicely here.--   ChristianMan16  05:16, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

Special Symbols

How do we type in special symbols such as accented letters, or the Euro sign, or any other form of special symbol? I wanted to type "Espanol", but I couldn't find the "n" with the "~" on top. Prime Contributer (talk) 10:47, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

Do you have Microsoft Word? Click on "Insert" and then "Symbol". There is a whole mess of special characters there. J.delanoy (talk) 14:17, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
You can then copy/paste. J.delanoy (talk) 14:17, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
Alternatively, if you don't want to launch Microsoft Word everytime, use the Character Map under Accessories -> System Tools. Chenzw  Talk  14:20, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
The easiest way for most special characters would be to just enable the specialcharacters/edittools section on your edit pages. Just add the following lines to your monobook.css page:
#editpage-specialchars {
     display:inline;
}

Music~@:L*&^%$£"!

If you want to know what I think...

I think that on user pages, users should be able to have like a user page song, so that other users can see what types of music that they like.

That's what I think.

I think it would be a benefit to wikipedia because it would make people work closer as a team, rather than indivuals.

Thankshan. QuotemeSilly (talk) 18:47, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

We're not MySpace. --Gwib -(talk)- 18:48, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

I know that, but on myspace, one talks about the football, and which bar one is going to this weekend, and who dumped who for someone younger than them. Music on profiles is only a small part of myspace, and I don't believe that it could do anything but benefit here. |I completely agree that a step towards turning Wikipedia into a social networking website is a step in the wrong direction. But, music would give users a sence of individuallity and a great way for people to express themselves and let other people know what they are like without actually saying anything. QuotemeSilly (talk) 18:54, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

You can add information to your userpage like your taste in music if you like, but we generally reject large efforts focussing on editors rather than articles. If you'd like to add your own interests in music, go ahead, but most people won't be in favour of an organised system to encourage it. If you're talking about actually uploading music, that's a definite no. Archer7 - talk 18:56, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Okay sir. Thankashan. QuotemeSilly (talk) 18:59, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

My large absenses

Hi all. I just wanted to let everyone know why I have been somewhat inactive in the past few weeks. My friend got me hooked on another website called Yahoo Answers where I have been doing very well, and as you all know, I also became more active on the English Wikipedia. As for the English Wikipedia, I have not edited there much in the past week and another reason for my decreased activity has been the fact that I graduated from high school yesterday. I am now going to be starting to edit here more often and I am cutting all ties with the English Wikipedia for the time being. I will start creating more pages now and I will start devoting more attention to this page in the future, but the other reason why I am posting this notice here is because I want to bring it to the attention of the users here that I will be taking a long Wikibreak later this month for a field trip that I signed up for earlier last year. I will not edit on here starting June 24th and I won't be back until 11 days later. So, I will not be on here for 11 days. I know that you guys don't need me here to keep the Simple English Wikipedia afloat, as Archer7 pointed out in my 5th RfA nomination, but I can't help but feel that I am missing every active user here. I will miss you all as I believe that you all have become like my second family to me. I will start editing more frequently now that I don't have to go to school, so keep your eyes peeled. I'll be sure to bring you guys back some photos so you all can see me in the grandeur of the Rockies :) Cheers, Razorflame 22:44, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
Where abouts are you you going and what do plan to do after high school? The life of brian (talk) 19:40, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
I'm going to be backpacking in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado around the Crested Butte for 10 days, so I will be gone from this site for about 10 days starting June 24th. I will make sure to bring back pictures for you guys. As for plans after high school, I have not really thought about any plans currently, but that doesn't mean that I won't be planning something :) Cheers, Razorflame 18:50, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
Let me come too!
It that over there where you're going for 10 days? Let me come too! That looks like so much fun. Some people just have all the luck (we don't do luck). Especially if you are doing that with friends, it will stick in your mind for days. Last Winter I (with my family) went skiing at Boyne Highlands with 2 other families (close friends), and the memories still stick fully in my mind. I wrote a story about, I've got to put that on my page for you all to read - it was amazing. I'll be working on that, I think. Bring back some good pictures you took. Besides, we're your real friends. Cheers -- America alk 19:21, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
