Hi, Creol, I was wondering what alternate ways there are for finding this list since the specialpages list is unfortunately frozen... Blockinblox - talk 03:04, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This list was created by using the latest pagelinks.sql backup (found here), extracting a count of how many times each link was used, sorting by most used and then removing all that we had articles for.
In theory, the current SQL file on the server should be accessible to someone with toolserver access and the output compared to the list of article titles to get the same thing much quicker. Actually I think I could have done that with my copy, but since it was my first time using SQL, I am still working on the learning curve. I had to stick with the most basic commands and haven't got a clue yet about using two databases to extract the list so much of it was actually done by hand. This list is based off the top 8000 most linked to pages (I think it is either 13 or 14+ links to make the list) and without being able to run it against the page list automatically, that meant several hours of verify which links were needed by hand. That part could probably have been done by bot, but I know less about that than my vast SQL knowledge, so.. -- Creol(talk) 04:20, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have created the cubic kilometre article. You can take it off the list now. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Minor Contributer (talkcontribs)

Most wanted?[change source]

Thanks very much for the time and effort that has gone into this list.

Maybe it's only me, though, but the results seem, at best, strange. For instance, the top current listing, "Hunadoara County", is for a district in Romania. For whatever reason, essentially all Romanian rivers and even streams have their own articles, and each includes a link to the district where it is located. I got 170 articles when I searched for that phrase. The next two entries are, similarly, for other Romanian Rivers, but the fourth is for "Notts County F.C.", an English football team with, as far as I can tell, only a single mention in SimpleWikipedia - in "List of English football teams 2005/06 season". In fact, most of the top "Most wanted articles" fall into one of those two categories: Romanian districts, with significant numbers of links, but only because of the very detailed listings of Romanian rivers, and English football teams, with very few links that I can find.

I'm not sure the list is serving its intended purpose. Tim Ross (talk) 14:36, 7 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nor am I. Many of these pages have been created as vandalism repeatedly. It seems that these pages are mainly here because they happen to be redlinks on templates that were most likely brought over from the English Wikipedia. Kansan (talk) 16:02, 6 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Who is in charge of updating the "Most wanted articles" page to what is on "Special:WantedPages"? I think it needs updating—are we allowed to do so?  Hazard-SJ Talk 23:34, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Huh.. Special:CrossNamespaceLinks and Special:DeadendPages also stopped on October 22. wiooiw (talk) 23:40, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Most wanted section is updated manually. Somebody will get around to it, I think it has to be syops as WP:RecentChanges is full protected. Special:CrossNamespaceLinks and Special:DeadendPages haven't been updated for almost a full year. Not much we can do about that.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 23:45, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
How and why was it stopped?  Hazard-SJ Talk 06:38, 7 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Because its created by a bot from a dump of the database. But database dumps only happen every few months...as for the other two pages wiooiw mention those were stopped at all wikis because they used too many resources. -DJSasso (talk) 13:26, 7 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Aggregator[change source]

You might want to remove that from the list. The majority of links to that article are user and user talk pages. --Orashmatash 18:59, 8 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This page mentions a "10/2/2012 update" which is obviously a really really long time ago for an update. The last meaningful edit has been in 2013, so that tells me this page is really no longer useful and would need to be merged with Wikipedia:Requested pages which basically does what this page should've done now. @Reception123 and Macdonald-ross: Just do what they do on enwiki and keep it as a historical archive. IWI (chat) 07:39, 7 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
