Winston Houghton Rekert (June 10, 1949 – September 14, 2012) was a Canadian actor. He was best known for his main roles in the television series Adderly and Neon Rider.
Early life
[change | change source]Rekert was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. He started acting when he was 12 years old. His first performance was in an amateur play called Amahl and the Night Visitors.
After finishing high school, he worked for a year in a logging camp. He then decided to try acting full-time. He later joined the Arts Club Theatre Company in Vancouver.
Career
[change | change source]Rekert appeared on television for the first time in 1973 in the Canadian series The Beachcombers.
In 1985, he acted in the American film Agnes of God. That same year, he was nominated for a Genie Award for Best Actor for his role in the film Walls.
From 1986 to 1988, Rekert starred in the television series Adderly. In 1987, he won a Gemini Award for Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
After Adderly ended, Rekert helped create the television series Neon Rider. The show ran from 1990 to 1995. He played Michael Terry, a therapist who helped troubled teenagers on a ranch. Rekert also worked on the show as a writer, director, and producer.
In 2003, Rekert won another Gemini Award for a guest role on the series Blue Murder. During his career, he appeared in many television shows filmed in Vancouver, including Stargate SG-1, Battlestar Galactica, and Supernatural.
In 2012, he received the Sam Payne Lifetime Achievement Award from the Union of B.C. Performers.
Death
[change | change source]Winston Rekert died on September 14, 2012, at the age of 63. He died after living with cancer for three years.
