Wuthering Waves (simplified Chinese: 鸣潮; traditional Chinese: 鳴潮; pinyin: Míng Cháo) is a free-to-play open world action role-playing game, which was developed by Chinese video game developer Kuro Games.
Story
[change | change source]Wuthering Waves is set in a futuristic world shaped by massive disaster. Facing this new threat, humanity learned to adapt and gradually rebuilt civilization. The story follows Rover (Chinese: 漂泊者) who awakens with no memory of the past and begins a journey to explore this world.[1]
Development
[change | change source]Wuthering Waves was first introduced in May 2022. It is directed by Solon Lee (Chinese: 李松伦).[2] In January 2024, the developers took feedback from closed beta testers into account and reworked the main storyline, while making broad changes to character designs as well.[3]
Release
[change | change source]The game was released for Android, IOS and Windows devices on May 23, 2024. It was later launched on PlayStation 5 in January 2025,[4] and released on macOS in March 2025.[5]
Reception
[change | change source]On its first day of public release, the game ranked within the top 20 of the App Store game revenue charts in more than 50 countries and regions, achieving top-ten positions in Mainland China, United States, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.[6][7] However, some players complained that they encountered numerous bugs in this game. After a short period of time, Kuro Games made an apology and promised that all players would receive rewards as compasation.[8]
In 2026, the spokesman of Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council responded that the game is inspired by Eastern aesthetics.[9] It has gained a positive reception from teenagers and video game fans in Taiwan[10][11]
