You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love (written in all lowercase) is the third studio album by American singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo. It was released by Geffen Records on June 12, 2026. It is a concept album. It tells the story of the rise and fall of a relationship and losing yourself along the way. The album has a guest appearance from English musician Robert Smith on the track "What's Wrong with Me". It is the first time another artist has been on Rodrigo's studio album.

The lead single, "Drop Dead", reached number one in five countries. It became Rodrigo's fourth song to reach the top on the Billboard Hot 100. The second single, "The Cure", reached the top 10 in many countries. A third single, "Stupid Song", was released with the album and a music video. To support the album, Rodrigo will go on tour. The tour will be called the Unraveled Tour.

When You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love was released, many fans and critics liked it. Many liked Rodrigo's confessional songwriting, vulnerability, and saw it as more mature than her last albums.[1][2][3] The album reached number one in record charts around the world.

Background

On September 8, 2023, Olivia Rodrigo released her second studio album, Guts.[4] It was produced by Dan Nigro, whom she worked with before.[5] It received six Grammy Award nominations.

In March 2026, Rodrigo slowly began talking about the theme of her third album in an interview with British Vogue.[6] She said the album would have many "sad love songs". She said this is because some of her favorite romantic songs are about feeling afraid or longing.[7][8] On April 2, 2026, the album's title was released after the name was seen painted on a pink wall in Los Angeles.[9]

Music and lyrics

Rodrigo wanted this album to sound different than her last two albums Sour and Guts.[10] In You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, Rodrigo continues her work with Nigro, who returns as the album's producer.[11] The album is inspired by Rodrigo's time in London. She said that album is her "most experimental" yet.[6] One track on the album, "Maggots for Brains", is a reference the relationship of Sex and the City characters Miranda Hobbes and Steve Brady.[6]

The album is a pop,[12][13] indie,[14] 80's alternative,[15] pop rock,[16] dream pop,[17] new wave,[18] concept album.[19] It is also inspired by shoegaze.[17] Its songs change between indie pop, emotional ballads, alternative rock, minimalist pop, post-punk, and pop rock sounds.[20][21][22] The album is also inspired by New Romantic-era rock, and college rock.[1]

Songs

The album is separated into two main parts: Girl So in Love and You Seem Pretty Sad.[23][24] Rodrigo wrote all of her songs. Sasha Alex Sloan, Amy Allen, Conan Gray and Lily Elise also helped with songwriting and singing.[25]

In Girl So in Love, the album starts with the lead single, "Drop Dead". The song has been seen as a synth-pop, chamber pop, indie pop, pop rock, and soft rock song.[26][27][28] It also has a rock bridge and a power pop guitar solo.[29] The lyrics are about the start of a romantic relationship.[30] The second song of the album is "Stupid Song" which is a pop rock[31] and synth-rock song.[32] Much like "Drop Dead", "Stupid Song" talks about the narrator during the early parts of their relationship.[33]

In You Seem Pretty Sad, the album continues with the single "The Cure". It is a downtempo, indie rock and pop song.[34] This song is about how the narrator is having doubts and mistrust in her partner and how this is causing some mental health problems.[35] In the song, Rodrigo says that she felt that the relationship she sings about was the "cure" to her problems.[35] The album then continues with the acoustic pop indie folk song "Begged".[36] Rodrigo said that the song is about her wanting to spend more time with her partner, however she feels she has been begging him for this.[37] The song after this, "What's Wrong with Me", has Rodrigo singing a duet with The Cure member Robert Smith.[38] The song is a baroque pop song.[39] In the song, the narrator is going through emotional problems and starts questioning their mental health. They talk about many symptoms such as anxiety, sleeplessness, and not eating.[40] This song is where the narrative of the album changes. Rodrigo no longer felt guilty about the relationship going bad and instead blames her boyfriend.[41]

The eleventh song on the album, "Less", is said to be about a bad breakup.[42] The lyrics for "Expectations" are said to be about Rodrigo's new rules about dating someone.[43] The final song from the album, "Cigarette Smoke", has lyrics that are about a bad response after a breakup.[44] It was said that the breakup Rodrigo sang about in the album is from her last boyfriend, English actor Louis Partridge.[44]

Release and promotion

The album's track list was first shown on May 26, 2026.[24] Preorders for Target-only vinyl versions started the day that she announced the album. Shoppers could choose from a "Pretty Sad" pink color vinyl and a "Hope Like Snow" white color vinyl.[45]

You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love was released on June 12, 2026.[46] When it was released, it had eighty-two million global streams on Spotify. It was the biggest debut of a female artist's album on the service for that year.[47] The album also earned the biggest 2026 debut for any album on Amazon Music.[48] It also reached number one in seventy-nine markets on Apple Music.[49]

Singles

On April 7, 2026, Rodrigo announced the album's lead single, "Drop Dead", which was released on April 17.[50] The song also had a music video that was filmed at the Palace of Versailles.[51] The single debuted at number one on the United States' Billboard Hot 100, extending her record as the first artist to debut the lead singles from their first three albums at the top of the chart.[52]

On May 19, "The Cure" was released on May 22.[53] It reached number one in Australia,[54] Ireland, and Singapore[55] and number five in the US.[56] Physical versions of the single has a bonus song called "Never Do".[57] A promo "Walk in the Park" limited-edition vinyl for the album tracks "Honeybee" and "Cigarette Smoke" was also released.[58] A third single, "Stupid Song" was released on June 12 with a music video, filmed in New York City.[59]

Marketing

On April 18, 2026, Rodrigo was a surprise guest on Addison Rae's performance at Coachella, where she sang "Drop Dead" for the first time.[60] Rodrigo then sang "Begged" for the first time during her appearance on Saturday Night Live on May 2.[61] On June 6, she sang "What's Wrong with Me" with Robert Smith of the Cure at Primavera Sound in Barcelona.[62] A music video for "Stupid Song" was released on June 12, at midnight Eastern Time.[63]

The album cover artwork shows Rodrigo upside down on a swing against a soft pink-and-blue sky. She is wearing a pink babydoll dress, long white socks, and Mary Jane shoes.[64] The cover has been compared to Jean-Honoré Fragonard's Rococo painting The Swing, which shows a woman on a swing in a pink dress.[65] The Target-only edition "Carve Our Names" picture disc vinyl shows an original oil painting by Chloe Wise based on a photograph by Chad Moore.[66]

Tour

On April 30, 2026, Rodrigo announced her third concert tour, the Unraveled Tour, in support of the album. It is made up of 86 dates across North America and Europe.[67] The tour will begin on September 25, 2026, in Hartford, and end on May 10, 2027, in London.[67] Singers Devon Again, Die Spitz, Grace Ives, the Last Dinner Party, and Wolf Alice will be joining Rodrigo on the tour.[68][67]

Critics reviews

Many critics liked how Rodrigo grew as a songwriter in the album

Pitchfork's Molly Mary O'Brien called You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love as Rodrigo's "most sophisticated" album.[1] She said that Rodrigo "has never sounded more adventurous". She said the album shows how Rodrigo has changed as a songwriter.[1] Sputnikmusic's Caleb Robinson said that You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love "will go down as one of the decade's [best] albums, and it [is] among the ranks of other modern pop classics". Robinson liked Rodrigo's songwriting talent and said it was perfect.[13]

Rolling Stone's Julyssa Lopez believed that Rodrigo's storytelling had grown more mature on the album.[2] Emma Constance from Clash compared Rodrigo's writing in the album like a diary entry. She said it talks about the rise and fall of a romantic relationship with "unfiltered honesty". She said that Rodrigo had successfully made a troubling part of her life into something "beautiful and unskippable".[69] Vulture's Jason P. Frank said the album was "essentially, a rock opera".[3] The duet between Rodrigo and Smith in "What's Wrong with Me" was well liked by critics.[2][70][40]

However, NPR Music's Hazel Cills had a more mixed review of the album. She did not like how "melodramatic" and "repetitive" the tone was for the album's first half.[71] She said that "Rodrigo doesn't step back quite far enough to truly make sense of what this relationship has done to her". However, Cills did like "The Cure" as "one of the strongest [tracks] of Rodrigo's career so far."[71] Stereogum's Tom Breihan said that the album "calls back to the college rock of the late '80s".[72] The New York Times felt that the songs in the album did not catch the "adrenaline rush" that Rodrigo is known for.[46]

The album appeared on many media list of best albums. The Irish Examiner put the album at number seven in their top ten list.[73] The Quietus put the album on the seventy-nine spot out of one hundred.[74] The album was also added in other mid-year lists such as in the BrooklynVegan,[75] Elle USA,[76] Flood Magazine,[77] Manila Bulletin,[78] New Musical Express,[79] Our Culture Mag,[80] Rolling Stone,[81] Slant Magazine,[82] and Variety.[83]
